Will acrylic paint come off in the water?

I bought white plastic shells for my shell top but I was very stupid and accidentally painted them with watercolor paints! :doh: I washed it off and now I am going to paint them with acrylic paint... Will that work?
I plan to swim with these so I need to know if it will come off and if it will what to use instead. Thank you :D All your help will be greatly appreciated.

the paint shouldn't come off once it is 100% dry. Give it 48 hours and spray with silicone spray which you can get at a hardware store. then give that 24 hours to dry

I painted my shell pasties with acrylics and sealed them with several coats of indoor/outdoor varnish. They've been fine so far.

It will also help if you score them. Since they are plastic it may help if you take a piece of sandpaper to them to rough them up so the paint has something to hold on to.

Acrylic might fade over time - maybe not on something hard like shells, but on fabric. You should be fine :)

eventually yes, using one that needs heat setting will work better, but if it's shells, then invest it water proof paint

silicone spray huh? any brand in particular? i have already gone theu 2 types of paintable silicone to seal shells by advice from other members and i HATED IT!!

What about making your own from clay or using the current ones, mold casting them (not as hard as it may seem) then casting them in resin in your desired colour? Its a process but worth it. They would last for a very long time and you can get pretty creative with what colours you use! :D

It really depends what you're painting.
The plastic shells seem like they'll hold it up pretty well, but like Marissa mentioned, you'll have to
make sure the paint is 100% dryed. Maybe you could buy a test shell and check? I paint super sculpey
with acrylic paint all the time and you can literally dunk it underwater and mess with it all you want and
it won't come off. You can always touch it up after with a varnish, but most of the time they're glossy so
if you want the wet look it's a good idea. Semi-gloss or silk varnish can be used for a less glossy look.
They sell matte varnish but it sort of dulls the color out so I wouldn't recommend that.
