If you swim in your tail in a public area (pool, ocean, etc...), how do you deal with onlookers or naysayers? Do you swim alone or with another mer-friend, and have you noticed a difference in the way people react if there's more than one of you?

I swim everywhere. I swim in hotel pools and I tend to go during school hours so I'm not swamped with kids that way i can practice, I swim in public pools for events and always talk to the life guard to explain my costume and safety, I swim in lakes they're the easiest, and i 'swim' in the ocean, nothing deep. Most onlookers wont actually be too crazy they smile might ask questions but only really come up and approach if I invite them to

i swim mostly in a public pool but i have dealt with teenagers who think im a freak. i could care less cuz im happy. i ignore it and keep being sweet. when they say it to my face i just tell them how much i love it and performing and YOUR THE FREAK,HUMAN! lol usually its no problem but the kids can be crazy and ask so many questions that i can hardly swim an inch.

I swim in any pools (mainly my apartment's or my parent's) and freshwater springs. i'm not exactly a strong swimmer (i used to be, but i've been out of practice since i moved away from my parent's for college), so i don't swim in the ocean due to having to control my nerves while battling a current in a 40-60lb tail lol.
i know GA has many rivers and waterfalls, i plan to eventually have a photoshoot at some =D

lol Spindrift that is great. I had my first public swimming experience in Vegas. There were no kids there because I was at the Hooters pool (yeah yeah I know). I was a little nervous, but it was not what I expected: no one seemed to care. People really didn't pay me any attention or give me a second glance. I did have a waitress and a hotel guest come up to me and ask about the tail, but they just thought it was really cool and it was a very positive experience for me. They wanted to know where I got it, that was all. :)

The kids love my Mermaid Monofin and ask where I bought it. the Parents and the lifeguards have the most questions, but so far the unknown public has been more supportive of my swimming than my family has been. Being land locked I can only swim in pools. I swim in a public pool down the street from my house and I swim alone because I'm the first Mermaid they've had there and I dont want to then overload them with Mermaids when I've only swam there once. I dont see a different. I dress in odd things all the time so it doesnt make a huge difference. Only one that is is people aren't afraid to walk up and talk to me or the kids. But I did ruin swimming lessons the first time so I have now an hour to go swimming in my tail 3 days a week. I wish I had other Mermaids to swim with but Stevi lives in Colorado Springs which is 4 hours total and Krystalle is always way to busy to hang out but I would love to find a pool that would love to add more Mermaids and I would love to find more Mermaid friends that would love to hang out randomly in our tails and find pools together and such. I have a hard time finding friends with my hobbies and likes...

I live in an apartment complex now and there is a pool here that the staff said would be totally fine for me to swim in with my tail on. They had never heard of someone mermaiding before when I asked and they seemed to be quite curious about seeing my tail, lol. I'm so thankful they allowed it:) I sometimes wish I didn't have to swim on my own I think swimming in a group would be a lot more fun! I even have public liability insurance and my public pool still won't let me in with my tail! I don't have my tail yet, saving up for it. But if I did, I would swim in lake superior. I live right up the hill from the shore and I work down by the water, it's a really big tourist attraction with the aerial lift bridge. I have an adversity to swimming in public pools. I don't feel like they're clean with all the little kids that are probably peeing in the water. I like the lake because it's cold most of the year so not many people swim in it.

I swim wherever I can. Public pools, my pool, the pool at my new apartment, wherever. So far, as long as it's deep, that's my favorite. So I'm going to have to say public pool. I get so many kids walking up to me and asking if I'm a real mermaid. I even convinced a group of children I spoke fluent dolphin and could understand sea otter. It was so cute. ^^

My boyfriend is from England and i asked him about your comment because i had honestly never heard of that (I'm australian and we are in australia). He said that's how he remembered it to and went on to tell me i wouldn't be allowed to wear my mono fin at my local pool. So of cause i was curious and called and got told by the lady that she had never once heard of a pool not allowing that type of tea (in fact many divers practise at the local pools) ......this got me thinking, why would you not be allowed to use them over there, i mean safety wise we have separate lanes for them. Perhaps if you brought that idea up it may change ....after all change only happens when one person stand up. Perhaps you could great a petition?????

On a different note, that's weird how you can't even wear fins in a pool in England? That seems so
strange? How is it any less safe than wearing them in the ocean? At least if some sort of accident
does manage to happen you have lifeguards present that can easily see when something goes wrong.

I think more often than not being denied swimming these ways has more to do with liability than anything else. I find pools that wouldnt normally let me swim do when I have performers insurance. Takes the liability off them if I drown or hurt someone accidentally, not that I plan on doing any of that

Okay, so I'm not the only one who was chafed by the 'end up gay' comment.

Wearing a tail didn't make me like the ladies, so I don't see why your son is going to end up gay. And seriously, calling them out on the lisps and other behaviors? One, you're stereotyping a huge group of people. Ever heard of bears? And if they do act like that, they're just being themselves and there's nothing wrong with that. Just because I'm a chick doesn't mean I can't rock a fohawk and swim trunks and be one of the 'bros'.

And just to stay on topic: I mostly swim in rivers and public pools. I live on a college campus and our rec center has a pretty sweet set of pools (one for rec use, one for laps). I live in one of those tiny towns full of awesomely weird people, so most of them barely blink an eye when they see a mermaid.

Actually, we swim here even when it snows! XD I'VE never done it, but there are plenty of people who do. The river stays almost exactly 72 degrees year round, so we swim in the fall and winter a lot.

I wish I could go swim in clear natural fresh water.. but the closest Lake would be a full days travel away. And despite being ten minutes away, the sea is Very Cold even in the hottest days of summer. Luckily my local pool and the city pool are both very supportive. While my family still roll their eyes, I have made two mermaid friends and 4 fabric tails since my earlier post.

I just want to give a word of warning to the people I have seen who mentioned they like swimming in lakes and ponds...

In FL, at least, it is a LOT more common than one would like to think that people get infected with and die from brain-eating amoebas. They tend to be very plentiful in STAGNANT water :( So where I might have once pondered swimming in an inviting-looking lake, I do not even consider it because that is SCARY to me! I ONLY swim in FLOWING water - springs, rivers, or ocean (if it is water from nature). Otherwise, I'll go for a pool. It isn't ideal - they tend to bleach out my neoprene tail :( - BUT I don't worry about the microscopic organisms. So just be careful, mer brothers and sisters, if you are going to splash around in still waters - our tropicalish temperatures here might be what allows these little but lethal guys to exist, but in case they are occuring anywhere else, just try to be safe :(

My sister's best friend was hospitalized for more than a year because of a nearly fatal bacteria that she got from swimming in a lake. :p Of course, I'm not about to swim in any tropical rivers either since there are fish that like to anchor themselves in painful places.... sudder.

You know what got me going off on that post? When he said he didn't want to dress as a mermaid because his son might see it and become gay. i live in a very conservative, blue collar, close minded town
i'm already one of the few out and proud gays
and i idk how showing up at our local pool in a fishtail would go over
i don't think i could do it alone

i much rather try a secluded area of a small lake away from prying eyes for the time being
or my bathtub lol

That's one of things I will be doing. The lake I live one was delcared a "dead zne" for a long time,, just recently. Like 2004 life was found, yet the area is still posionous. In the 50s and 60s, maybe hte 70s(I am not exact;y sure when but in that time) Hooker Chemical started up on White Lake. They are the same company assoicated with Love Canal in New York (?). One of their waste products was C-56, some super longer nace that starts with hexa and has chloride in it. C-56 is very harmful. When the plant closed anything that was assoicated with teh company and factory was but into a bunker. It was disgusting, there were picture taken of big oil drums jsut dumped out back behind a the factory. Also, waste water was dumped in right into the lake. Also, on the othe side of the lake there was a Tannery.

I looked on the Michigan Superfund list, and on White Lake alone there are/were 13 total (some of been cleaned yup and takne off the list). White Lake is tiny, only 7 miles long and at most three across.

This is something that I hope to educatte the public with using my mersona.

Well when I finish my tail I will swim in my family's private pool and then the local rivers and lakes when my belly button piercing heals. Im a pool mermaid until it heals or my piercer says I can.

So I did some research into it.

The river is called the Onkaparinga, a. Anglicised derivative of ‘Ngangki-parri-unga, The Place of the Woman’s River’.

The flow of water in the catchment is managed by SA Water, which has a mandate to not only keep the river and connected protected wetlands healthy, but to provide clean drinking water to the surrounding suburbs. The river is fed by the Murray River via the Mount Bold Reservoir and Clarendon Weir.

Most of the pollution in the river comes from Stormwater and from general population runoff, Insecticides and other such chemicals.

I live near the mouth or end of the river, so I see it at it's worst.

The Murray River is in a far more dire postition, as not enough water is reaching its banks in SA in order to keep it healthy. The river also runs through the states of NSW (Capital city Sydney) and Victoria (Capital city Melbourne) and faces the same pollutants.

The main problems of both seem to be, removal of water for agriculture and Population consumption and runoff pollution.

So... what can I do? I'm reading up on the Save the Murray group. There is already lots of awareness and a fairly awesome advertising campaign. So, we'll see.

I haven't received my tail yet but I think when I do I will swim in the ocean. I'm super nervous because I don't do well with crowds and I'm not sure i'll have anyone to lift me to the waters. I don't know any mermaids in Southern California its totally new to me. I'm usually garbed with the Pirates and gypsies and One party I met two mermaids on the Markmen Party Ship of POTC in SD and I totally fell in love.

swim in the local pool when only adults are allowed, which makes it easier for me to swim alone in my tail. I have had some odd looks, but most of the people don't mind me or find it cool that I was swimming in one. I once even had that a guy said that we all should swim like mermaids/men at the moonlight swimming hour of the pool. It will never happen, but it would be cool.
At the end of the month I will be swimming in a lake in hopefully my new mermaid tail :)

I swim weekly with only my monofin in our public pool as nothing below the knee is aloud here. when I ant to swim in a tail I have to go to a private pool or in a hotelpool :(

I swim 3x a week at my local rec center. It's usually pretty full, but the deep end (9ft) is pretty empty most of the time. I've never had any problems with people questioning my safety, especially after they see me swim in my tail. The lifeguards actually watch me closer when I don't have a tail on! And I've never had any problems with people wondering why I'm in a mermaid costume. I've always theorized that because I live in a landlocked state, they just assume that a real mermaid would have to visit the rec centers! It's actually been a wonderful experience for me to swim in public. I've rarely had any problems, most people are just excited to see a mermaid. I wasn't sure at first if people would be supportive, but where I'm at, people love it.

I take whatever I can when I go anywhere!
I usually travel a lot and take either a tail or just my monofin and hang out with the people whose opinions I care about and try to ignore those that dont matter (none the less it can be quite difficult sometimes :/) If you don't like swimming in a full fledged tail in public then just use the monofin. If someone questions you, you can play it off as a "core workout." However if someone is interested you can tall them all about your mermaid endevors! :D

This actually happened to me while swimming at a public pool. The life guard came over to talk to me and was SO excited about the monofin and asked me lots of questions. :)

was at jellybean pool and a group of guys walked past me and Charlotte. SO awkward!! we were on the bank and heard them coming, but couuldnt escape (being in a tail) so we just looked down and hid our faces :P
Its always the worst with people my age :L teenagers either give "THAT LOOK" that im sure everyone has experienced at one time, or they yell out mean things :S
i usually try to stay away from too many people, i dont want to attract attention until i have a silicone tails that looks legit :)

I haven't swam swam in my tail yet, just did a photoshoot in the water...so THIS FRIDAY!!!!! MAIDEN SWIM!!!!! WHOO HOO its going to be at my friends apartment pool. she is going to use my udnerwater camera and take stills and vid for me :) but i have lakes around here and hotels with pools and even a college that has a rec center with a large pool. I am still awaiting an answer about the tail in the college pool tho. So the safest bet would be to go to my friends apartment pool, plus i will have a swimming buddy and a camera operator :D

Right now I'm just swimming at a local pool - no tail or monofin, yet (tho I have a monofin on the way). I do laps in a lane and bring my own dive rings to encourage me to swim closer to the bottom of the pool. When I asked the staff if it was okay to use dive rings their response was "As long as you're not throwing them at people!" I'm hoping they're just as easy going when I bring my monofin in =D

If not, there are like 3 other local pools I could try. If all else fails I also have a few friends who have a seasonal, outdoor apartment pool - so I might just have to "use them" during the summer >.>

I am glad you dont have a problem with same sex attracted people. You do have to be respectful of how you word things on Public forums. Everyone is different and I am in a same sex relationship 'Adam & Steve'. Your son will not be gay because of your hairy chest and a tail, its far more complex then that. Something like an art form and a means of fun shouldnt be reduced into a possible sexuality.

Why is a little boy seeing a man in a tail a problem? It's a dude in a tail....that's it! it's not like they're trying to force feed homosexuality on him. If he ends up gay it's his choice. (That or you made it such a taboo he had to see what all the fuss was about and decided he is happier being gay)

I swim in our local pool and everytime I do I get questions. Where I got the tail, how much and is it hard to swim in. Then there are a very slim few that are scared of me. But sence it is winter time I am going to be swimming at a local college. Tomorrow is the first time there, hope it goes well.

I only really get the chance to swim when I'm on holiday (Live in the UK) I live right next to the river ribble wich is great for photoshoots but have yet to go actualy swimming (Plus it only stopped snowing over here like a month ago and it's still not rose above 13 degrees) As for not being allowed to use mono fins in public pools here it is annoying but to be honest I don't really like the idea of swimming in front of a load of people. If I'm abroad I prefer using outdoor pools because I think they genraly have less chemicals because I have always found my eyes hurt less after swimming in an outdoor pool.

Yes! I love Mermen! They are my favorite thing! We need more of them in the mer community because they are just wonderful.

Anyway, as far as swimming goes... I'm just starting out and I think I'm going to use my college pool. It's been years since I swam professionally so I need to get my kick strength back up.

Though I did get to swim in the Detroit river a handful of times. Of course I was tied to a boat by a life jacket and I was like 8.

Maybe if I get better I'll go out there again. Down side is there are a ton of boats, so I doubt it.

Most of the city pools around here have a no swim fins, masks, snorkels, or pool toys policy just because they are so crowded. The exception is the indoor pool at the senior center. They have some hours that are open to the public so that's where I go swimming. I don't have a tail yet, but I just ordered my first monofin. I'm 99% sure they'll let me swim in that, but I'll be sure to talk to the head lifeguard about wearing a tail.

Same here, Gem! They usually just smile and say, "You doing a public swim today?" Sometimes I do public meet and greets and other times I go to the competitive pool to swim. They like to know which one I'm doing because some people tend to ask if I'm going to be there when they come in. It's really considerate of the staff to try to make sure I'm not mobbed when I need some swim practice!

I never fully swim in a crowded pool and try to avoid doing anything that appears dangerous, so hopefully I'll be able to continue swimming at my favorite place.

That sucks! I understand safety issues if a pool is crowded, but not if it is almost empty.

Myself, I went to a town hall-regulated pool just down my street, and asked if the use of swimfins was allowed. They said yes, so next time I went with my tail.
I put it on just by the edge of water, in a place that was empty of people. After a couple of laps one of the staff girls was waiting by the edge, and I thought I was going to be asked to remove the tail. Nope! She just wanted some pictures!! I was so afraid and then I was ecstatic! :yay: Most people make nice comments about it.
I try to keep myself far from people to avoid any incidents though.

But a swim cap is mandatory; googles are optional, but I use them, because I have no possibility of filming underwater, and my eyes are sensitive.

One week ago, after a tough research (8 pools refused me with my tail), i finally found my place. I swim in a public pool which allows monofins. At this moment, i'm the only person using one and as a merman. So far, everybody has been very nice to me and enjoyed watching me swim. They think that i look very cool with my tail. A girl even took a picture with me. Until now, no one even asked if i was gay or straight. :)

I'm enjoying this pool and i go there three times a week. I intend to try a hotel pool soon. I will keep you updated if i succeed or not.

I find it impossible to fully tailswim when the pool is too full (like, not even one lane without another swimmer);

mainly i've been swimming at the river near where i live. also gone swimming in lakes. probably gonna be spending most of my time in pools since its starting to cool off where i live and already the river here never really warmed up :( still working on my tail so that is a few months away from being used but so far with my monofin have yet to be asked any questions. just wish i had someone to swim with since i tend to get bored when i swim alone in a pool (i hate laps!)

Yeah it's public pools for me as well, I went swimming with my monofin for the first time a few weeks ago (I'm new to the mermaiding thing) in the pool opposite my boyfriends house. They didn't say a word and people weren't giving me weird looks or anything which was really pleasant. I hope they react the same once I own a tail :).
