Can Anyone Clear This Up For Me?

So I've been talking a lot with my family about them helping me get a Raven tail. I've gotten them to mostly agree, but my mom doesn't like the fact that I won't be able to walk in it. We were talking about me doing birthday parties, and she said something that seemed so obvious that my jaw dropped and I couldn't think of a response to her.

Here's what she said:
If I'm hired as a mermaid for a birthday party, it's my responsibility to make sure kids don't go running off. Since I can't walk in my tail, how am I supposed to go chasing after kids who aren't interested in me?

I honestly couldn't even think of what to say to her first. Isn't it the parent's responsibility to keep their kids in line? I told her that and she said "What if the parent is in the kitchen getting the cake and ice cream ready?" I told her that the other parent should be out watching the kids then.
She said "The other parent is at work." I played along and said one of the older sons or daughters should help the parent watch the kids.
She said "The kids wouldn't help me if I payed them." I then asked her why she's holding a birthday party all by herself.

I told my dad about our conversation, and he agreed with me. He says if I'm being hired to act at a birthday party, I'm certainly not being hired to be an assistant to the parent. The kids are for the adults to watch, I'm there to be a mermaid and do mermaidy things.

So the question is, what are a mermaid's responsibilities when entertaining at birthday parties? I would certainly think they're there to keep the kids busy, but not to help the parent keep the kids in line. Can anymer clear this up? Maybe AniaR? ;)

Your job is to entertain the kids not watch them, not babysit them. You are a mermaid & you are to act like and entertain like one, not take on the role of a parent. There is also the though that normally another parent or two at least tends to hang around such gatherings either to add additional help with organizing & control or at the very least to look after their own child.

I am not a pro mermaid, but I would definately suggest getting a mer-assistant in case one or the other parent is busy or the older childeren do not want to help out. It's also best that you have an assitant in case one of the childeren gets to rowdy around you or to help you in and out of the pool. Good luck ;)

I have a clause on my web site that says one adult MUST be present at all times during my performance. I love kids, but I'm not a babysitter, I'm not being paid as one. I have an assistant, but their job is to make sure I don't get beat up/drown, help me set up/take down, and take photographs.

That's nice that most of your family is willing to help you get a Raven tail, though! My family is sort of like, "If you want to do this stupid hobby, you can bloody well pay for it yourself!" XP

I have a mertender, [a few, actually] but I never pictured bringing them to small events like birthday parties. I always picture in my head swimming in a kiddie pool and a mertender is nonexistant in that daydream, but for a big event like the Tall Ships, I would definately have a mertender or two just to help with the crowds. I can't believe I spaced out like that. xD -sticks post-it note to forehead saying "Don't forget the mertender!"-

I agree. Parents should parent and entertainers should entertain. Be sure to make it clear to your client that a responsible adult should be present at all times to take care of the children and their needs. Many parents to think that an entertainer is a babysitter but as a mermaid, we really can't do that since we are mobility challenged :).
