Okay, so apparently, this is currently qualifying as a trend.

I notice the 'news' thread in the forum is for non mer-related events, so I'll just put this here. A pretty positive article on MSNBC.

Man, 3-Fins must be raking it in right now, the same pic is on this article as on that Cafe Mom/The Stir claptrap.

as exciting as it is to suddenly have this huge mer-family i could have never dreamt of....it saddens me to see it becoming some "trend" for popular masses. i don't do this because it's some "it thing", i do it because it's who i am....and i don't want teeny boppers blowing daddy's money making people take it less seriously than it is for me. tattooing became a flooded industry...i'll be damned if they flood our oceans and lakes with posers too.

This makes me pretty happy actually. It's great to see that Mermaids are becoming the new "Vampire/Werewolf" trend. At the park I lifeguard at, I saw a little girl with that pink and purple mermaid monofin. I can't tell you how giddy I was when I saw it! Thankfully my job is to watch people so I got to experience her first swim!

But yes I also agree, mermaiding requires responsibility. You can't just be like "Huurr hurrr I'm going to bind my legs together and swim in the ocean." Frankly, I'm a strong swimmer and I STILL have doubts about swimming in the ocean with a tail on. People don't realize that you need to have a professional atmosphere as a mermaid. It's dangerous, but can be safe if executed properly.

I also have a fear of this. Where i live, though there aren't many clear large sources of water, people are aloud to carry weapons on camping grounds (which is the only place with natural water basically) so what if i go off a bit for a quick dip with my tail and they freak out and take a shot at me? what am I to do when it shows up on the news: teen girl dressed as mythical creature shot. ?

Have you guys ever heard of the Hetalia fandom? They've gained a horrible reputation because of the things only a few of the people in the fandom do. (for instance, it's said they're all imature,they're very rude, etc.)

ABSOLUTELY!!! that is a great point.
and that's another great point about the dangers involved in people diving into something they don't know well because they want to be part of the crowd. i would die if anything happened badly to the community if tragedy struck. luckily, i'm hoping people realize that one bad accident doesn't reflect the group as a whole.
and i LOVE seeing the new generation getting into mermaiding. i was the same when i was young. after i bought my tail, my 7 year old daughter became highly perceptive to the idea and her new goal in life is to grow up and be a mermaid. i've been looking around at tails for her as a surprise...thinking about the leggings that have the fin....it would be the fastest to remove and still have nice detailing to make her feel like a real mermaid...and i can help teach her to swim in it. :)

oh! sorry, one more thing i mean tto voice in my last response...i have never encountered this, but i have read a lot about it in threads on here that public pools and beaches have rules banning mermaiding. if something bad were too happen...or it became too popular....it would perk up the ears of a lot more locations to start banning mermaiding. it would really suck if we all finally got to the points where we could freely enjoy being mermaids just to show up to one place after another being greeted by signs saying to leave your fluke in the car.

The beginning of last summer is when people predicted that mermaids would become the new Vampires. I remember because I was concerned about it and it was a community discussion subject before the World Mermaid Awards. I just don't want it to become so popular that it messes with the market of professional mermaids so badly that no one can get jobs/gigs. Also movies would be nice, BUT I don't want it to become so popular and shoved in people's faces so often that people end up hating it as much as people hate and are screw-off sick of vampires because of Twilight.

Either way, I've seen a few articles like this so far and the big concern seems to be safety. If you're a tail maker you better be sure you "cover your ass" legally, because if something happens someone will want to sue. We have disclaimers on this site as well that extend beyond tail swimming. People can be stupid, but when the stupidity really gets someone hurt they want to blame it on someone else. So CYA, people. Also apparently 3-Fins made the #3 oddest etsy item as a mermaid tail you can actually swim in.

and merboy...i agree, i can't get enough mermaid movies. there aren't too many to choose from. i'm quite fond of fish tails. billy zane is hilarious in it, and the woman is drop dead gorgeous. one of my all time favorite's is from the 40's called mr. peabody and the mermaid. it inspired me to do several portraits of anne blythe. and even one of her as a mermaid being carried by frankenstein. i'll take some pics and attach them. :)

sometimes i wonder if the choice to use a fabric tail maker instead of a realistic tail maker for the same price (like mermaid parties) is helping the community seem so crazy. (nothing against the 3 tails but think if instead they showed realistic latex tails instead of fabric tails for that price?) I prefer spending a year of my time (for exemple) to make my perfect realistic tail myself instead of doing this.

This is very disappointing... None of these writers and critics do their research. I absolutely love mermaiding even though I have never tried it. I haven't even swam in a tail yet or let alone flippers and I would never say anything as rude. Really?!? An embarrassing way to drown... It's not like we just put on a tail without knowing how to swim and just jump right in... (unless you are me :p ) I have the dolphin kick down and I wouldn't just jump in the deep end of the pool and assume I can swim in a mermaid tail. It takes work and time. I feel like these writers don't do any research. I also feel like it's ruining the community's reputation. It's sad that these people who don't do their research can do such a thing... What if a kid like me told their parents about their mermaiding dream and their parents won't allow them to do it because of an article like this?

Hey there, I perform as a mermaid, make an excellent living doing it, and I really wish you people who just happened to find a hot link on mermaid tails would actually do you research. Swimming and performing in mermaid tails has been around for over 100 years since Annette Kellerman first developed it. (you might know her as the woman who created the bathing suit, bested an awful lot of men in swimming, and made the first underwater movie that also cost 1mill) Mermaid tails are fitted with "monofins" a special type of fin used by freedivers and Olympic athletes. Scuba companies like Finis made such fins with children in mind, all shapes, colours and sizes, all perfectly safe. yes, they keep your feet together, it's called "the dolphin kick". There's never been a recorded incident of a child or adult swimming in a monofin or mermaid tail and drowning. There's a huge mermaid tail following that isn't just "new" because you only just found it. Performers like me are trained, and children should NEVER be left to swim unsupervised regardless of fins or not. I agree Raina. I'm going to the Utah Pirate Festival this year, and will be chilling with the (really good) Cap'n Jack impersonator on his (really huge) fake ship. After that, I'm hoping to build up a bit of a reputation, get a Mermaid Parties tail (as a starter pro tail) and show this dry, old state what a mermaid really is. I hope to someday be able to do a bit of what you do and teach people about conservation and the environment. You are really an inspiration.

I dont like how its becoming a trend. I have been following mermaiding for about 3 years now and have loved mermaids ever since I saw the little mermaid movie (at age 4) and Im just now able to have the funds to make my own tail so its kind of sentimental to me to finally to be able to have a tail after 3 years of waiting. Then along comes daddy's little girl who just wants to be cool so has daddy buy her a nice tail for a month then does nothing with it.

I'm thinking the same thing of Alveric. I'd say characterizing us a small devoted fanbase of people participating in a distinctive subset of cosplay, and who sometimes overlap with other geeky fanbases and subcultures is more or less accurate. People at sci-fi/fantasy conventions kick ass, and I bet half of them would wear a tail in a heartbeat.

There also was some kind of review of different "Swimming Toys" in German TV, and since the magictails come from Germany, they were also part of it.
Long story short, the show's host also tried to be a mermaid. It was the same terrible thing to view like that Yahoo News video...
Plus some statements by the host, like "It doesn't make that much fun because you really have to struggle in order to move through the water." :doh:
