alex or alex plus? did i make a big mistake?

so i'm confused. is it alex or alex plus that is good to use? i know neither are the best but which is it that people are using?:doh: cause i think i'm using the wrong one. i have been working with the regular alex and if that is bad can i use alex plus on top or do i have to remove the 8 tubes of it i have put onto my wetsuit already?

The type we've experimented with has been ALEX Plus. I was going to look up the difference between ALEX and ALEX Plus to see if it actually matters and what the difference is, but DAP's website is having server problems. Go figure. :/ I'll try again tomorrow.

i know the alex doesnt have any silicone in it. its just latex. so will that be ok?

I think Alex and Alex plus are simila but the silica is different. I wouldn't rip it all off and start again unless you are experiencing problems. Are you experiencing any issues?

not as of now but i am worried it wont hold up in the water. i would hate ripping up what i have done already. the other question is should i stick with the plain alex or should i start putting the alex plus on top of it or... rip it all up and go to square 1 and begin again with alex plus????

i have 3 contractor boxes of the plain alex if i have to go with the alex plus i can return the boxes i have that arent opened yet and get thhe alex plus.

Yeah, this seems like the best course of action. Generally I've only heard of people using Alex PLUS, but I don't know why. Its possible Alex will work though.

If it turns out that it won't work, how well has it bonded to the neoprene? Do you think you'd be able to remove it somehow?

i am going to do the swatch test. i think its bonded pretty well but i always have my ways of removing things. i thend to be a picker amd can get it off if i need to. i would just be bummed to put the work into it and have to destroy what ive done already.

well i just did a small tesr swatch. a small piece under water for a minute started peeling imediately! so my decision is made. soak the wet suit. peel it all down to the neoprene. return the contractor boxes of plain alex. buy alex plus. start again. its a bummer but now we know! DO NOT USE REGULAR ALEX! USE ALEX PLUS! i hope anyone else starting a tail doesnt make the same mistake and reads this first.

I don't have much knowledge in the area, but I thought there was something of a backlash against Alex PLUS a couple years ago. Was that overblown? You get what you pay for. Spending some extra to go with the tin cure silicone rather than tin cure latex would be advisable. No one has had the tin cure silicone tails long enough to know how they degrade after a few years though. As for ALEX... take a look and tell me if you're okay with your tail doing this in a few years (http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc227/winged_mermaid/Me%20as%20a%20mermaid/Mertailor%20Tail/Wear%20and%20tear/ALEX%20Degradation/). I know at least 3 other mers having the same happening to their tails. (We're the earlier Mertailor orders generation, right before and right after he started using neoprin and all Rapid monofins.) The damage to one's body is up for debate (although Raina had medical proof of it effecting her as stated in the MSDS, as she has more frequent blood work than most people), as is the effect on one's environment. The truth is that if you use it you'll have to do repairs down the line and will eventually have to retire the tail, but that could be said of other tails as well. In the end it's up to you. We don't really have knowledge proof wise if the tin cure silicone will actually hold up with use over time better than the tin cure latex. However just knowing the difference between latex and silicone I'd say the silicone is a better bet than latex. So yeah! My 2¢ there.

with alex plus because i am learning and dont want to waste mo.ey while i am working on my concept. o have experience wig latex and silicone for movie makeup that I used to do . and not yo mention that I won't be spending mug time in the tail since I only manage to get out on rare occasions andso I expect Otto hold up longer then moat pure people would
expect.
