BIOLUMINESCENCE in nature!

So, I decided to start another thread about bioluminescence in nature (especially our oceans).
I thought it would be neat to discuss what science has learned about it, the plans they have for it (yes, they're playing around with it), as well as share pics and species with each other that have it! I love to learn and sharing info is one of the best ways to do it!
SO without further Ado...

The firefly squid. They use their light to attract prey and confuse predators. I love the dotted design they have. I believe it was the inspiration for the dotted bioluminescence of the Na'vi skin design in the movie AVATAR.
I also like the two extra bright "bulbs" on the tip of their tentacles

My dad is a lawyer who specializes in business law, and for awhile was focusing on getting pharmaceutical companies off the ground. One of those companies had concocted a use for the chemicals that cause fireflies to glow to identify the presence of certain bacteria that cause illnesses in humans.

wow! Joy, I just read that the other day! It's cool that they're doing that. I think the chemical is called Luciferin, and they are using it for all SORTS of purposes!!!

These are glowing dolphins. Bioluminescent zooplankton glows when it hits something, i.e. the side of a boat, waves,... or dolphins. There really is no way I can describe this phenomenon to you except that it is the most hauntingly beautiful thing I have ever seen (I was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean btw). They are not glowing per se but absolutely amazing all the same.

Yeah, I think I saw it-- and I've seen a few luminescent merfolk in art. Not common, but a cool theme!

I love all these pictures and videos ;D (especially since I've always had an interest in bio-luminescent creatures) It also makes me remember that I haven't been seeing fireflies around for a while. o.o I wonder where they went lol.

I'm in upstate NY right now, and my friend took me out into the country where he lives... we went out into the woods at night and were SURROUNDED by THOUSANDS of fireflies! It looked like a fairy land... it was an amazing experience!

I'm so happy I found this thread I'm currently designing a tail with luminescent features. I'm going to be ordering said tail in the next few months. (Finally!) & I needed some examples. I already have the general design in my head and partly on paper but I'm working out some kinks.
