Foot cramps & Charlie horses

So I finally went mermaiding in a full tail for the first time last weekend....now it may be because I had surgery 4 weeks prior and have been mostly sedentary...or I'm doing something wrong. I know my muscles aren't what they used to be because of health problems. I normally have zero problem doing back flips through or over waves etc. But with the tail on....EVERY.SINGLE.TIME I tried to do a flip, I would come up dying and claw into my mertender's arm waiting for the calf cramp to pass. And it would alternate legs. Does anyone have any tips beyonds taking more potassium that can help with these cramps: techniques? or exercises I can do out of the water to build the muscles I need to do tricks in the water? Oh, also happened whenever I tried to dive and flip my fluke out of the surface (which is my favorite thing to see). Thanks guys!

I just need to get into better shape period. :( Also, I always spring into a jump to start a flip...and you can't exactly do that in a tail....don't wanna mess up the fluke or anything on the sand...and even if you try, the monofin caims a suction to the sea floor either killing your bounce, or yanking the fin right off your feet.... hmm...

I get them too, it means your body doesnt have enough water so drink lots before and while you swim, taking magnesium supplements help too, and rolling your feet along a ball in the arch will prevent foot spasms.

I'm going to have to try the ball trick. When Bubbles and I went swimming my foot got all curled up and I couldn't swim anymore :(

next trip to walmart i'm swooping up some magnesium for sure. and yea, i'm trying to hydrate more. gotta try n stretch n stuff too. once my surgeon signs my release, i can get back to physical therapy on my legs.

Coconut water has potassium, magnesium, and is super hydrating! Everything a mermaid needs right there! Just make sure to get a good brand- like zinco, one that the only ingredient is "coconut water", and not a splash of the stuff and a lot of junk like some drinks. Zinco also makes flavored ones like chocolate and pineapple (my favs) or just natural. (Some people can't get past the taste of natural unflavored stuff though.) It's the natural sports drink! I love it because I get dehydrated very easily. It's great to prevent and cure hangovers too, btw ;)

Another thing you can do along with all of these ideas (which sounds weird) is taking a rolling pin and roll it on your calves to help circulate blood and oxygen through your muscles. My cousin is a runner and she does this for her cramps.

Yeah some people hate it :P I don't mind the taste at all. My husband loves sipping whiskey (blech!!) but he makes a face drinks the coconut water as fast as possible, haha. He, however, was fine with the pineapple and chocolate flavors :) So the flavors are worth a shot!

Zinco, O.N.E Coconut Water, Naked Juice Brand coconut water, and Vita Coco Coconut Water are all good. Just make sure "coconut water" or "100% pure coconut water" is the only ingredient, and avoid anything that says it's from concentrate. If you want to try the flavors, just look at the brand's "natural" stuff first to make sure it is as I just said. Flavored ones will of course have additional ingredients, but that's on you :)

I've seen these brands in health food stores such as Sprouts, Henry's, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, even GNC. Also in stores like Albertsons, Vons, and Safeway. I know Walmart has Naked juices (SO MUCH LOVE for the Green Machine!!!) but can't recall if they have coconut water. It can be refrigerated or on the shelf. It's usually with the Naked Juices, protein drinks, POM Juice, ect when it's in the refrigerated section. These are usually in or around the produce section of the store. Otherwise stores put it with other "health drinks". If all else fails, ask an employee! Just FYI it doesn't have to be refrigerated before it's opened, but do so after opening if. This usually isn't an issue for smaller size bottles of course, but I like to buy the big bottles!

Hi guys,
I remember back in my swimming squad days I would get heinous foot cramps when wearing flippers. Does this happen at all wearing tails, because I imagine if you got one you'd pretty much drown which doesn't sound too great...

Foot cramps can happen. I've had pretty bad ones, but I've never came close to drowning and haven't heard of anyone who has! Stretching and hydration is important, and magnesium can help. Check out this thread: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2612-charlie-horses!!!

Foot cramp is not pleasant :( I got it once during my mermaid shoot earlier this month. I was in the water and it just came on all of a sudden, but thankfully passed within a few moment. I will try that tennis ball trick :)

Anyone who was at the September FL meet up has already heard my woes of my feet xD

Anyways! While swimming in my tail for the first time, after an hour or so, my feet started to cramp up. It was pretty normal since we were swimming for a while and I was working new muscles in my tail. But I couldn't rub this one out. It hurt as I drove home and continued to hurt for two days afterwards. Finally it straightened out and got better.

But this weekend I was at my aunt's pool and I tried on my cousin's flippers. I got in the water and did ONE dolphin kick and my foot went right back into a horrible cramp. Just after one dolphin kick! I sat down and relaxed for a minute and it passed. Then I started swimming in the flippers again like a human with no problem. But as soon as I went to dolphin kick again the cramp returned!

Why is this? I was swimming for almost five hours that say with no cramps other than when I tried to dolphin kick? How can I avoid this other than drinking lots of water and eating bananas?

Take Magnesium supplements and drink lots of water! I believe Raina recommended this, and it worked wonders for my cramps.

lol there actually 2 threads on this already, take magnesium a few hours before you swim, and routinely stretch your feet by rolling a tennis ball underneath them and pushing down hard. Cramps are also a sign of being dehydrated so drink water

I went ahead and merged all the threads! Here are some highlights:

Cramps can be caused by:

Tight muscles- Stretch well before swimming. Stretch your legs with pointed and flexed feet both. If you don't know stretches, look up some! Use a tennis ball to roll on your arch to stretch it out really well. Use a rolling pin on your calves for a nice massage to help with circulation.

Lack of magnesium- Calcium contracts muscles, and magnesium relaxes them. People say potassium is the culprit of cramps (thus eating bananas), but actually that causes more muscle weakness than actual cramps. More often than not, the cause is lack of magnesium. We are very often deficient in magnesium in our diets. Take a magnesium supplement a few hours or the night before you swim. Depending on a myriad of factors, magnesium may not be absorbed well through the digestive tract. If an oral supplement doesn't help, try a topical one, as it is readily absorbed through the skin. A foot soak in a foot bath with epsom salts, or use of epsom or magnesium lotion, or magnesium oil.

Dehydration- Drink lots of water!

Electrolyte imbalance- Calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and sodium blance. If you've been exerting yourself and sweating a lot, and drinking a lot of water, it is possible you may need some electrolytes to help fix your cramping issue. A sports drink like Gatorade can help, but I HIGHLY recommend pure coconut water. It has potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium in it. It's restores electrolytes, and is very hydrating. Only buy a good brand of coconut water. The plain stuff under ingredients should only say "coconut water" or "100% pure coconut water" and nothing else. They come in a variety of flavors for those who are picky. Zinco's pineapple and chocolate are my favorites!

I usually get cramps right away on the second dive (scuba) of the day.

when im about to get a foot cramp, (you can feel the muscles start to tense) i flex my foot untill it relaxes, it can hurt like a bitch, but it helps it fade faster, especially if you catch the cramp early
