A few months back I ordered a tail from the2tails. After I swam with it the first time, I took the monofin out and I noticed a small (and I mean SMALL) crack in the middle, but thought nothing of it. Now, the thing is a half inch long and is FREAKING me out! I don't know what to do!

This can happen when monofins are cut, especially if they are notched in the center. When you cut a monofin you need to round out any sharp indents (like the one in the middle).

________ Correct ____________ Incorrect _____

You can try and re-cut the fin to round it out, OR you can use a drill and drill a hole at the apex/end(s) of the crack and that will stop it from getting any larger. This is an effective method used in everything from monofins to windshields.

I wish more tail makers knew this. I've messaged some about needing to change the way they cut their fins, if ever so slightly, to save their customers headaches. I haven't heard back from anyone. Perhaps as a customer if you contact them, they will listen to you and it will save future customers the same problem and stress.

somebody should link mermaid nyla's thread because she cut hers the same way and it shows a perfect example of how to cut and not to cut a monofin.

Maybe next time you think of a thread that would be useful to link you can link it? That would be very helpful. I have to do a lot of that already :P Thus all the reference threads I've been making lately.

But this probably needed to happen anyway: Sticky thread on how not to cut a monofin with examples (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2638-VERY-IMPORTANT-How-NOT-to-cut-a-monofin-shape&p=32733#post32733)

Sorry Iona. I do my best to link things myself, but I was on my phone and I had to go meet someone do I didn't have a chance to. I'm still on my phone, but once I get out of bed I'll grab the laptop and hunt down that thread.

here ya go. Her first cut was too sharp, her second cut was perfect. That's how you want to cut your monofin. gotta scroll down the page a bit to find the pictures.

If you have one of those rod sanders, that'd be really good for sanding the crack into a round cut.
