Do you equalize?

I'm no diver at all, but I've swum down to 10ish feet and felt my ears pop...and I wonder, should I be equalizing? I've heard a tiny bit about equalizing, but I'm not sure when I need to do it or exactly how (I know plugging your nose and blowing, sort of). Do you equalize when you tail swim? When do you do it, and how do you know when you need to?

That's what I do :) Works fine.

I equalize my ears 2-3 times on a dive to 10' underwater. Holding your nose and exhaling gently is the most common method. Swallowing while closing the nasal passage with the soft palate (hands-free) also works. And if you're wearing a mask (as opposed to goggles, which are not good at any greater depth) be sure to exhale through your nose to put some air into the mask. That's called mask equalizing, which prevents mask squeeze. Many novice scuba divers forget, and emerge from their dive with what can resemble two black eyes from the pressure on their mask.

I cant seem to equalize in ANY instance :( not flying a plane, not going on the highway really fast, and not when diving down. I was talking to a dive instructor about it who insisted if I took his course he could teach me different techniques, lol. I dont tend to go past 12 feet for any reason

When I started diving I had the same problem but i found if I sort of angle my head so one ear is up and the other is down it really helps. Plus if you're doing 2 consecutive dives equalizing is always A LOT easier on the second dive.

Equalizing is SO important. I am a SCUBA diver and a freediver and this is the most basic training you can get. All the methods described here work. It makes for a much safer and fun dive experience. You can quite easily damage or burst your eardrums if you are not equalizing and once you start, you'll find you are able to go to much deeper depths very comfortably.

hmm....i've always done 9 feet down with no problem...i have no idea how far i would need to dive to feel the need to equalize. but some people responded that it should be done multiple times by then. is it possible to cause pressure damage that shallow??

Wow, im sure glad i found this thread! I didnt even know there was a solution to this until now !:yay:I can get to 13 ft when it started to hurt, but didnt really bother me. I have to try this soon

While eardrums are a little tougher than lungs (4 psi vs. 2 psi), they can still rupture easily. 4 psi is about 8-9 feet deep, so most pools are deep enough to cause rupture. Once you get on scuba, you'll see people equalizing in 3-4 feet on a regular basis.
