An employment question

I'm just looking for some advice to my situation here.

Back in the middle of may, I was hired by the vista fleet. It's a big tourist attraction. Cruise boats that give tours. Anyways, I was scheduled to work a few shifts, which were difficult, there was a lot to learn. But I did my best. I think I worked a total of 4 shifts. At the beginning of June when the tourist season got really busy, I stopped getting scheduled. I waited for a few weeks, figuring they were testing how long I would stay with them when I'm not getting hours.

Anyways, our CPR certification cards came to the gift shop, and I went and picked mine up. While I was there, I saw one of my managers. I greeted him with a smile and a "long time no see" in a subtle attempt to remind him of my lack of hours. He acted nice enough, said hi back. But a few days later when I went to log into the website we use to check our schedule, it said that a manager had changed my login credentials. This was confusing, I wasn't told it would happen.

I sent an email to the manager that does all the employee scheduling and whatnot, asking her about why I couldn't log in, if she knew anything about it, and if she had noticed my lack of hours.

I never got a response.

A few weeks later I decided to stop in the office to talk to a manager in person. But they weren't there, and the other manager was on the boat. I stopped in two more times, and it was the same situation. I sent another email to the managers, and again, got no response.

The last time I stopped by the office, I left a note at thefront desk with the gift shop manager, telling the manager to call me. I never got a call.

Finally I sent one last email to the manager, saying this lack of communication is getting ridiculous and all I want to know is if I'm still employed. I know I'm probably not, but I want to hear it from them. I know the managers aren't busy. Construction is blocking off the road to their gift shop and there was an article in the paper about how they were in a slum because of it. The girls at the gift shop counter were shocked and suprised to hear how the managers were handling the situation.

Im prettymuch sick of them and if I'm not fired already, I quit. But I feel like they should know what they're doing is wrong. Is what they're doing against the law? I know they don't have to tell me why they fired me, but don't they have to tell me that im
fired? I don't think they can ignore me

jo. you need to go to the labor board. bbb only handles things from a customers stsnd point.

I think you'll have a hard time getting anywhere with this, I'm afraid. While I'm no legal expert, I've heard similar stories from other people in a number of different jobs.

What they're basically doing, is firing you without firing you. If they did terminate your employment, then you'd have grounds for unemployment benefits etc. However if they just give you no hours, you're still technically and legally employed. You then quit, and that can screw up your chances for unemployment benefits as well, since you're the one who terminated employment, not them.

Best thing to do, is just move on. get another job as quickly as possible, since the likelyhood is high that your employment contract will state what they're doing is well within their rights etc.
