MerNetworkis proud to announce the first MerNetwork Challenge: Landlocked Mermaid


Makesomething featuring the theme of a mermaid or merman living outsidethe ocean. It can be humorous or serious, and can be a video, aphoto, a drawing, or even a song. Be creative! A poll for voting on your favorite entry will open in this thread on the night of Monday, August 1st,and close one week later on Monday, August 8th. To submit, simply post, embed, or link you entry in this thread. Submissions will be allowed up until the moment the polls close. Good luck, and have fun!

Love the theme! My entry is a 12-line poem entitled "Refugee' From The Sea". It's supposed to be from the POV of a young mermaid(who H2O-style has legs when dry) who fled from the ocean into the human world in order to escape from the increasing pollution that mankind has caused to her home.

If you pass by me on the street, I look like any other girl,
So you would never guess that I came from a whole other world.
You have no idea how much it hurts to be so far away from my home,
When the only momento I have left of my birthplace is my favorite seashell comb.

I had no other choice but to leave everything that I ever knew behind,
Because of all the environmental damage and destruction that was unleashed by mankind.
Being forced to live amongst you wasteful, greedy fools is sometimes enough to make me feel sick,
Especially every time I see a grocery bag made of plastic!

Only when I'm alone in my pool can I feel even remotely free,
And close my eyes and pretend I'm back where I belong, in the sea.
Maybe some day it will be safe for me to return,
But I sincerely doubt it, since humankind still has so much to learn.

Crap, I'm sorry guys. I totally forgot. I just opened the poll, and I'm extending the deadline to the 15th. Since I want people to be able to vote for things that have been submitted after the thread was created, the way it will work is you can vote for Entry #1, Entry #2, and so on. Each entry is numbered by the order it was submitted, so the poem Princess Kae-Leah submitted is Entry #1, and the photo Star submitted is Entry #2. Anyone who submits something after this will be Entry #3, and the one after that will be Entry #4, and so on.

Also, just to be clear, the deadline is being pushed back to the 15th.

Thanks for your patience with this whole thing. I'm sorry I'm not more professional about it. Although I'm really learning, and I think I have a much better idea how I'm going to run the next challenge.

So, its the 15th, and the challenge is over. Congratulations to LittleOrca, who won, and to Raina and Star who both get an honorable mention! All three entries will be posted on the front page!

Also, I learned a lot from this one, and I think the next one will go better. The poll will open after the entry period closes, and I'm going to ask that everyone title their entries to make it easier to identify them. The next challenge will be posted shortly.
