I'm preparing to make my first tail. My monofin should arrive this week and I'm having a hard time deciding on what material to use. The spandex seems very easy but not as authentic. I'm not sure if the neoprine is in my price range though. I have heard some made theirs from vinyl. I thought I would ask around seeing as I've never swam with a tail and thought expert advice is needed.

I have one tail that is in lycra covered with sequences (bought it like that) 1 (http://mernetwork.com/index/album.php?albumid=269) 2 (http://mernetwork.com/index/album.php?albumid=268) 3 (http://mernetwork.com/index/album.php?albumid=272) and all my other tails are made in 'velourse de panne' 1 (http://mernetwork.com/index/album.php?albumid=271) 2 (http://mernetwork.com/index/album.php?albumid=270) 3 (http://mernetwork.com/index/album.php?albumid=273)

Hey Mirra! My first tail was spandex, and I really like it still. If you're concerned that spandex wouldn't look as nice, you should check out Little Orca's tails. Hers are spandex that she painted, and they look really cool. Also take a look at Mermaasai's first tail. It has a really cool fluke that works with the monofin's shape.

Of course you can paint neoprene too. In general my thought is try spandex first- it's easy to swim in and still looks nice underwater.

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback. I'm off to buy spandex. :-) It will be my first tail so that will make it the most beautiful.....though I do wish i had the money or material to make a silicone tail.....Happy swimming sisters!! I'll post updates soon!!
