Lately I have been thinking about setting up a mermaid fan page on Facebook and was curious to how many of you mermaids and mermen out there have one? On Facebook or any other type of network. And would it be best to already be performing before having one?

I have a mermaid Facebook page and a fan page for ocean and aquatic conservation and awareness.

I have a personal and 2 fan pages. One for Merman Jesse and one for Mermaid Creations by Merman Jesse.

Please like my pages. Please do not request me personally. I would like to keep mer separate from real. I am in the middle of unfriending people I don't even know. They are mers, but have no clue who they are.

You don't have to be a performing mer to have a page! Some people do it just to keep up with other pages and mers. Especially since most people don't have a mermaid account (I do), and even for those that do others who don't aren't comfortable friending a mermaid page on their personal account a lot of the time. They would rather just like your page on their page.

Either way, there are a LOT. I try and like every mermaid page I come across, but I'm sure I'm missing tons! The best way to like all of the page is to go to a page and go to their "likes". It will give a full list of all of the page that they have liked, and you can "like" each one that you haven't yet. If you have the button won't show up. There are a few mers that do their best to keep up on pages, so just look around and see how many you can get from others. We try and keep the MerNetwork FB page updated.

Here's my page (just launched it this past weekend!): http://www.facebook.com/MermaidIona

mine: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Raina-the-Halifax-Mermaid/183327321702019 getting the first 1000 fans is super hard I find. but once you crack 1000 FB gives you extra features and they'll advertise your page for free (not to the same degree as if you paid, but still, free) once you get past that.

I have a fan page, its linked in my signature. I don't have a tail yet, but I figure I'd make the page to get myself out there and get some fans first, I think I'm up to 14 fans now? Pretty pathetic compared to AniaR, xD but I expect I'll get a lot more fans once I get out and start doing surprise appearances on the beach where I can hand out business cards and whatnot.

You guys have awesome mer pages :) I'm defiantly going to set up one now that I have pictures of me in my tail.
Something I'd love to do is use my singing through mermaiding somehow. I've always loved singing! If I made a video of me singing folk or known sings would Facebook take them down for coupyright purposes, even without using a backing track of any sort. Last thing I want to do is get in trouble.

Your vids won't get taken down, there's no legality in singing someone else's song without a backtrack. :)

Thanks Ayla! Though I better check first. And it seems impossible to get in touch to ask Facebook anything.

Facebook has an automated system for that kind of thing, so if it sounds like a song with copyright it's very possible it won't make it up on the page before they say it's "Alleged copyright infringement" and delete it. :/ You may want to do some research into that, or just try and post it and see what happens.

I think she should try to post a song without any background music. It'll be interesting to see if the system can pick up on someone singing acapella. :)

I think I might give it a go. I might try a couple of Northern English folk songs I know. The songs themselves have been heard sung for centuries so they might actually be public domain. We'll see :) Thanks for all the advice.

By the way, you guys have awesome fan pages! I'm going to be liking all of you're pages when I get mine up and running.

It's nice to see so many with mer pages.
It's taken me quite a while to build up the confidence, which I don't have a lot of, to think about and getting around to making my own page. I wish I wasn't so shy sometimes lol. Is there certain things one should take into consideration when putting their fan page out to the public? Any general advice. I'm probably just overreacting but I'm usually so cautious.

Karymermaid, I don't see your page anymore. :(

Sea Pearl - I follow something on the order of 205 mermaid-related fan pages, and I know that there are more, but I might not follow them for a variety of reasons, including:

1) The subject person/ admin is a child. God bless the beasts and the children, and I will stick with adults.
2) There has not been any activity on the page for quite some time. It doesn't all have to be freediving in the Aegean Sea to be interesting. Even Hannah Fraser will just post photos of beautiful places around the Earth between her big events. It's about staying connected and building communities.
3) No photos. I like to know the people with whom I engage. There are a few exceptions, and those have come after double-checking with friends.

There is one person who has her fingers on this particular pulse so well that I often follow her lead, and that is Kae-Leah, Royal Purple Mermaid Princess. Every once in a while, I will find out about a page before she does, but that's pretty rare.

If you want the list of the 205 pages, let me know. I could probably have something ready in two days.
