World Mermaid Awards not happening... at least in the way everyone is expecting or paid for. I have called the Mirage after hearing rumours about a venue change. Nobody seemed to be able to confirm or give any information about a convention for mermaids that features a swim in the pool. I will be calling again when I can speak to their events director personally during their work hours (time diff is a bitch, but any of you are still free to call to confirm) and I'll tell you exactly who I speak to and what they say.
There were also many suspicious posts on FB that lead me to believe it's not happening at the mirage or with a lot of the events/people who were advertised. I've been waiting for some sign from the organizer but realized with 12 days left until it happens for those of you flying or staying at the mirage etc someone's gotta get a move on and confirm these details.

I'll own up. I called the Mirage 3 times today after hearing some rumors. I wanted to confirm the existence of this event before sending my father, who will be in town on the 12 and 13, to take some pictures/pick me up a trinket since I'm in Georgia, busy, and unable to attend. I spoke to a woman (Gina, I believe??) who told me that the manager was in a meeting and to call back in an hour. When I called back, I spoke to the same woman, and she said she would track down the manager for me and have him call me but, quote, she "couldn't find any information whatsoever on this mermaid thing". She apologized and took my number and promised to have the manager call as soon as they had any information. It's almost 9pm where I am, and no call.

eeep!!! I am also worried about all the people then who had booked to stay at the mirage. I feel bad for Sita, when I last talked to her she was really stressed out but I hadn't heard the mirage had been cancelled.

That's it, I've had it. I'm making a post on the WMA facebook page. I have paid for my plane tickets, hotel reservations, AND tickets to the WMA. I deserve some information.

And people say hidden fees on phone bills are bad.

I'm not saying the event isn't happening at the Mirage 100%. I'm just saying that the people I talked to had no information available to them about said event. Which I find extremely strange giving it's proximity.

This was JUST posted on the WMA FB a few minutes ago... "The World Mermaid Awards, Mer-Con and the Hannah Mermaid and MeduSirena pool show are changing location to Silverton Mermaid Resort in Las Vegas. At the last minute Mirage told us they don't have a permit for people, MERMAIDS included, to swim in the pool after dark. Plus they had hidden fees of about $150,000 for food and drinks. I had to pre-pay for every ones drinks last minute for the pool party, and they would not let us do a cash bar for everyone to buy their own drinks. I could not afford to buy every fish their drinks, and then not even swim.
The Mirage also has captive dolphins and the World Mermaid Awards and Mer-Con event became a target for a huge protest and negative publicity, so along with the fact that we could not swim in the pool, hidden fees, and protest, it was impossible to stay at Mirage and deal with all the controversy and protesters. So we have officially moved to the Silverton Mermaid Casino athttp://www.silvertoncasino.com/ (http://www.silvertoncasino.com/) they have a 117,000 gallon Mermaid tank with Live Mermaid shows, with a Mermaid Themed hotel and lower hotel room rates.
We will make sure all the Mermaids and Merman who come to Las Vegas for the weekend will have an enjoyable experience. We are doing the best we can under the extreme circumstances that have come up for this amazing event."
Hope this helps everyone!

the new location looks and sounds a LOT better
I agree Raina, I've been there and it's a great location! I'm so glad things worked out, seems like Sita's been dealing with a lot.

I just talked to Sita. She doesn't know me and I'm sure she's being bombarded with questions, but she took the time to talk to me personally and answer every one of my questions. I have a lot of respect for her and how hard she must be working to try to fix a bunch of the complications that come with trying to start a whole new convention that's never been done before.

Wow, a little harsh, don't you think mermanjr? Calling someone a witch, thief, and con-artist isn't exactly a fair arguement.

Gary, I'm excited that you're hosting an event and we're happy to have you promote it on this forum, but we do have rules against personal attacks on people. Please try to restrict your criticisms to the event itself. You're allowed to criticize people too, but we ask that you keep it respectful and avoid lobbing insults and starting fights.

yeah like I said on one of the other posts, there's no need to attack the WMA's nearly a year later on every single thread that involves it AND promote the event. There's already a thread for merpalooza, and if you realllllly need to vent about WMA's just write your own thread explaining everything
