View Full Version : Mermaid/Ocean Wedding Ideas?

So, as a lot of you know, I've recently become engaged to Orion and though our wedding is still a while a way, I was hoping to start planning it now. :P I'm hoping to have a mostly nautical, mermaid, ocean, fish inspired theme, and I was curious if anyone here had some good ideas? We are most likely going to be getting married at the Oklahoma Aquarium (in the same spot that he proposed.) so the theme fits perfectly. So yeah, if you feel like throwing some ideas out, please do!

Here's a couple of mine, just so you know what I'm thinking.

That's a beautiful idea!
You know how some people drape that peach fabric over the chairs? You could definitely use some fishing net
the napkin rings could have shells on them as well :}

Nice finds!

On the goldfish note, we are planning on having betta fish at each table as part of the centerpieces. We're also thinking of using old glass bottles (picture below) to hold them in.

Oh, and the color scheme is champagne, Caribbean blue, and purple.

We did that at my wedding and they worked really well! The best part was being able to give them away as gifts to people that helped out with the wedding. I kept them in open low ball style glasses. They really loved being able to take the fish home with them. And since beta are so colorful, I was able to get them in my wedding colors. I'm so happy for you, and I hope all the wedding planning goes well!

Here's an idea that I really would love to do, IF I ever do get married... Why not get married in a tail, as a mermaid? It may take a lot more work depending on what you want to do... like got the whole nine yards with a 100gal tank and such... But that's the most mermaid-y idea I could think of. Would your fiance participate? Or would he want to be in a Tux?

I will admit though using betta fish as part of the decoration bothers me.

I guess it's because they're live pets that require more care than most people realize. A lot of people seem to think of betta and feeder goldfish as decorations, and don't realize how much care they need. If you really wanted to do this and give them away to people who helped, I would make sure they're really interested in the responsibility of a new pet, and not just taking it to be polite.

If you wanted betta to live as long as they potentially could, they need a filter, a heater, and a large enough tank among other things.

Mermaid Lorelei
09-23-2012, 12:58 PM
I wondered if that was what you were going to say and you don't have to worry. :> All of the betta fish are my personal bettas. My fiance and I have already agreed that we can take care of fifteen or so betta fish, so we are planning on keeping them all. I wouldn't feel good about giving them to someone if I didn't think they would be taken care of, and I certainly don't want to give them as favors. We also have the tank space to care for them properly, so they would only be in strange conditions for the single night.
Does that alleviate some worry?

First, I would like to say congrats! Planning a wedding is stressful but sooooo fun, I created my entire wedding by hand, it took me a while but it was so worth it. I had people asking me all night where I got all the stuff and when they found out I did it they told me "You should go into business!" I don't think I could handel that kind of stress all the time though, lol. Second, I have ALWAYS wanted to do a wedding dress (did NOT have time to make mine due to the fact that I had to move to another country AND plan a wedding in 3 months!) so, if you want something truly special and no one has it, let me know!

Those are awesome, Jebilily, but WAY expensive. XD Even if I made them, they'd still cost too much unfortunately. :<

Do you have any examples of your sewing Siren?

And Aquatarian, I'm seriously mesmerized by those crystal strings. O.O

I've started making some of my supplies already. http://photos.weddingbycolor-nocookie.com/p000019104-m134423-p-photo-346883/Bubble-wands.jpg
I've taken these bubbles and added a shell to each wand handle. These will be for the guests to blow bubbles instead of throwing rice or confetti. :>

For a decent price on a wedding dress I'd go here, they have all types of dresses for a decent pricing range, I bought my reception dress from here i was happy with the quality, go here- http://www.lightinthebox.com/c/trumpet-mermaid-wedding-dresses_2653

some dresses that catch my attention:
6724

and this one: http://www.lightinthebox.com/Trumpet--Mermaid-V-neck-Court-Train-Chiffon-Elastic-Woven-Satin-Wedding-Dress_p174765.html

for a wedding cake hmm: http://eweddingcakes.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Beach-Cake.jpg

But for the bettas, make sure you tie a ribbon with instructions on how to care for their new wedding centerpiece.(Cause alot of people think of them as disposable fish :( )

You can add it like this:

"This is a living centerpiece; each fish was chosen with love.
With your love and care, he will flourish
May he bring you much happiness, just as you have brought us,
by being a part of our celebration.”

If you want that warm glow and a nice centerpiece: http://bios.weddingbee.com/pics/91828/shell20table20centerpiece20up20close.jpg

Only examples I would have for show right now is the Alice dress I am currently doing for my little ones Halloween costume, then soon my red ridding hood costume (the movie style one), and then I also have my husbands Jedi cloak. I wish I had more :( The one thought I had for a dress that would be mermaid-y and simple would be for you to find a dress you truly love and I could make a lovely train for it that would be detachable that looks like a tail. It would start at the waist, of course, and connect to itself in a diamond pattern (see pic (http://germanrenaissance.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/honeycomb-smock-pleatwork.jpg) for example) with a little jewel where the patterns cross, it slowly tappers to all come together at the bottom, only to flare out into a pleated fluke shape.

It would look like a mermaid tail, just very elegant and maybe not in a very obvious way, subtle. Did that make sense or did I just go off on a artist ramble? Oh, and of course, I could make it any color you wish. This is something I can 100% guarantee I am capable of and have it done within two weeks max. Also, I have some qualifications under belt. Took sewing classes in high school and have been sewing costumes ever since, first year costume design, and second year SFX. I wish I had more examples for you but my wedding was just barley a year ago, to a lovely British man, so I left a lot behind in the states. So, picking up where I left off is slow going.:(

Jeblily
09-26-2012, 08:29 PM
Actually you can make them for pretty cheap! You can ship just the bottles with a postage stamp and the bottles cost about a dollar each. So you could buy some sand and shells at most dollar stores, and the paper is just parchment paper. So I would figure about a 1.50 per invite. I forgot where but I saw instructions for them, and they were sealed with wax and in boxes and the person only spent 1.60 per person. So you can do this pretty cheaply it would just require allot of manual labor.

Mermaid Lorelei
09-26-2012, 08:51 PM
Hmm, for some reason I expected the bottles to cost more. Just might be possible. Thanks Jebilily!

And you don't have to worry Lanai. None of the bettas are going home with guests. All of the bettas will be living my fiance and I. :> Those are some beautiful dresses too!

I kind of like that idea Siren, but I don't actually want my dress to look like a tail. I'm more into the traditional mermaid style gown.

If you wanted betta to live as long as they potentially could, they need a filter, a heater, and a large enough tank among other things.

I had a betta live for 5 years with no problem, he was big and healthy. That is, until the cheap terrible apartment complex I was in tore apart the water systems and didn't tell us until after the fact that the water quality was utterly ruined... all my fish, even filtered and well cared for in the aquarium, kept dying. I was so depressed and still get sad when I think about it...

On topic though, I personally like the idea of bettas but I definitely agree that they need to go to GREAT homes or keep them yourself as you said! Make sure the kids don't knock their little bowls over or "play with them." But, that goes without say.

Mermaid Lorelei
09-26-2012, 09:15 PM
Haha, yeah, I'll definitely be putting up little signs or hanging tags to warn guests about the fishies. And, thankfully, there will be no children at my wedding. I love children, don't get me wrong, but we are trying to keep the people to a minimum and I honestly don't want to be worrying about kiddos while I'm celebrating.

I'm not sure if anyone posted this already but for my wedding(when it comes lol) instead of flowers use dead coral that has been painted or fake coral that looks real as my and my brides maids flower bouquets with strings of small pearls sticking out. Also for center pieces I wanted to have lage cylinder full with water with an air bubblier to make bubbles from the bottem and have fake plastic fish inside of them attached to fishing line to look like they are swimming with the coral and shells on the top sticking out of the cylinders.

Also if you use betta as center pieces I would get some water conditioner that detoxfies ammonia(rotting fish poop and food) it will build up and can stress them out and poison them and if kept in for a few days with no filter can kill them. I would use seachem prime, it will protect them for 24 hours or until they get clean water, depending on how many gallons the pieces will be and how many you have you will only need one bottle of 8.5fl oz of prime beacuse two drops will treat 1 gallon.

Speaking from personal experience, Bettas actually do very well in small, unfiltered containers. I'd be way more concerned with the high noise levels, lighting, people tapping on their containers, etc, and for those reasons I wouldn't want to ever use them as centerpieces for an event. Their natural environment is pretty rough, I remember reading they're able to live and breed in a hoof-print in the mud filled with water. I had a pair of bettas in flower vases for about 5-6 years and rarely changed the water and they thrived. The more you mess with them it seems, the more they get stressed. You should never use straight tap water though; spring water or water treated for chemicals is the way to go.

That is not true at all, I have no clue where you got your info from but they live in huge rice patties that span for miles and get just under knee deep in some places, the rice filters the water naturally removing waste levels that can kill them, having their tank unfiltered is like living in your bathroom with no windows and never flushing your toilet along with having to eat right next to it, just beacuse they are living they are not thriving. They should live 10 + years in captivity and need a heater since they live in a tropical area and are a tropical fish. While they can live with no filter or heater they will not thrive and can't reach their full potential. If you have any questions feel free to pm me since this is off topic here. But I agree, stress would be an issue and never use tap, you should check even spring waters before use beacuse they use ammonia and other things in it to make it safe for us to consume, not for fish to live in. :)

I have always liked those cakes with fountains as the base. My mom had one at her wedding and it was cool. It would be neat to add tiny mermaid figurines in one.

Figured I would put it here since this about mermaid weddings and this belongs but it can be worn for anything by anyone. You just tie it on like you would tie a belt. It fits around my neck with extra net hanging down so it should fit a guys neck as well. From end to end its about 24" long.

Coincidentally I'm also having that same theme.. And the wedding date it's next year.

Firt you wanna narrow down your themed ideas. Also make sure that theme won't look like a kids birthday party.

My theme is going to be "enchantment under the sea". Once I get access to a real computer I'll go ino detail about what I have, and maybe it'll serve as inspiration.

Also have an inspiration board ! Those help you out a LOT.

I changed out the cord so that I had a visible something blue!

Getting ready! It required quite a few people and ended up being a hilarious afternoon.

The ceremony took place in front of the Coral Reef exhibit. It was the exact spot on which my husband proposed!

My sea-themed wedding cake! There were cupcakes as well, but I can't seem to find the photo of them all once they were set up in the reception hall.

Thanks Ellowyn! We had a fantastic pair of photographers! Also, I HIGHLY suggest having a premade list of photos you want! It made it so much easier to quickly take all of the photos we wanted to make sure we got.
