Why bury it? If it died naturally, wouldn't it be of more worth to pull it out to see as fish food?

large whales release chemicals into the water when they die ESPECIALLY mercury (as they sadly accumulate a LOT of it in their blubber) think in many places around the world it's in public interest to dispose of them this way sadly. I know that's what happens here too

A bit more civilized than the infamous exploding whale.

Hope they drained the spermacetti oil and recovered the ambergris first!

Fresh ambergris is worth hundreds of millions per pound.

That's absolutely what I thought it said...and everytime it pops up in the news feed that's still what I think it says :D Glad I wasn't the only one, lol

Very sad though with it being pregnant and all, though I think it is neat that they already had a "fish cemetery" in which to bury it!!

To be fair, I'm not sure it's "fresh" ambergris that counts, as I thought it needed to float on the ocean surface for some time, to absorb the smell of the sea.

Those guys in Oregon didn't realize that explosives don't make things go away, it just turns them into smaller bits and spreads them around. Something you really don't want to have happen with a corpse, especially one that weighs many, many tons.
