Swimming Buddies

We all know that swimming alone can be dangerous. But how easy is it to find another mer? Can a post be made of who is around for swim dates? And are there classes for swim first aid that might touch on breath problems you develop practicing. I know the dive shops have such things but the closest to me are neither cheap or really near.
