There are several movies out there with mermaids, like Aquamarine, On Stranger Tides, Splash, H2O etc etc, ad i was wondering if anyone knew if there is anyone who has made tails like them? Im not sure if its mostly animation, but especially in Pirates of the Carribean 4, Syrenas tail and the scales and everythings just looks so... so realistic!!! :)

But i was surprised that no-one makes tails like that (apart from the several Splash tails around)
Does anyone know tailmakers who do? :)

I want to say that those tails are most likely digital ....but what do i know lol.
anyways from looking at the pictures wouldn't it be hard to actually get any perpultion (sp) with that tail? its split so high in the middle i dont think that you could put a mono fin in it unless you made the fluke longer....

Well...its possible to make a tail like that, just make it like the H20/Aquamarine tails. I also love on stranger tides mermaid tails, I'm currently designing one for male as well female.
Just go to this youtube page to make an entire extended mermaid tail :):

I plan on making simple fabric versions of the h2o tails soon! I would also love to make an aquamarine one for myself :)

they're not digital, but for most of the movies they are several tails designed for several functions. My tail was inspired by the splash tail. The only digital tails are the ones from Pirates. The girls learned to swim in monofins to get the body motion down but wore tights that they animated over

wow. That would be really cool having youself animated to have a tail. They look so realistic. I still do like real tails more though. Its kind of sad that people can animate more realistic things than people can make.

haha it's funny you say that because I think costumes look better than cgi when it comes to mermaids. More believable.

When it comes to movies, I prefer cgi just because you can capture movement and features that you just can't with a person in a costume, but JMB FX had come pretty close with Aquamarine. ;)

I actually like to look at the different still and screenshots for different mermaid movies, they help inspire me to create different designs. I'll even scour the internet for movie concept art. It's a great way to start a spark if you have artists block.

yeah, the pirates ones were digitally added in, but they do still look wonderful. i loved that movie :3 id love to see someone turn it into a real tail.

I agree with Raina. I loooove old school costumes versus CGI, in nearly every aspect. Be it mermaid tails, fairy wings, werewolves... I've seen a dragon or two that made me all giddy too. While animatronic or costume, it just seems more real to me because I know its touchable.

I like how alot of the mermaid tails have "foot plates" attached to the monofin..... it sometimes looks more natural
i didnt realise that people (Nykur, Saphira etc) actually make them outside of movie producers! thats awesome! it would probably be my first choice in a tail ^.^

Anyone notice Eric's latest FB post? It's not like he copied that tail from H20...

I guess mine is loosely based on the POTC tails, almost finished, just a couple more pieces/scales to paint on.6896

I am working on a tail that will hide the feet a little more.

the odd thing is my mermaid tial was based on the POTC mermaid it just didn't come out exactly that way. i think my next tail will be more closley based on the tails

I know in Aquamarine she had legit tails that werent all CGI, but she had several types. One was an animatronic and one was the extended tail with the foot plate like the ones used in H2O. You can sort of see it in this video.

I like the ones in the 2003 Peter Pan movie, you only see them very briefly; but i still think they're cool.

Well the tails for Aquamarine and H2o where done by the same company headed by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wg2xMJNNSE

watch this and this is who did both tails

Thom Shouse created the splash tail for the movie splash and has done countless others as well
checkout mermaid retals.com for more info on those

7146 actual tail that Thom Shouse did

7147 this is splash too tail also done by Thom Shouse

now jesse tails he just did for 2 clients tell me if the look anything like the pics

7148splash too tail by jesse tails from mercreations by merman jesse

7149 splash tail

these are close by not the orginal design but this is close as one can get to the real thing of these tails do to copy rights
which he had permission to these tails from the orginal maker of the orginal tails to do these for these clients from what i understand and it was confirmed as well
but i think its neat how the tail makers can do tails for sets, movies and shows the way they do!
