View Full Version : How can I get my monofin inside my fabric tail?

Hey guys! So I made myself a fabric mermaid tail with a finis monofin. I've been having a LOT of trouble getting the monofin into my tail, and it even ripped the tail. However, my tail is MUCH too loose and I need to make it tighter. I have fairly skinny legs, so I'm not sure if I should alter it so the tail fits, or just forget about the fabric tail and buy a latex one. The issue is that the other mermaids in my pod have fabric tails, and they want my tail to match theirs, and are very angry that I may get a latex one. HELP HOW DO I GET THIS MONOFIN INTO MY TAIL?!:jawdrop:

I believe there are a few videos on youtube that show you how to go about sticking your monofin in your tail. I would list them, however I am at school right now and can not get on youtube. You might want to ask my dear friend Mermaid Bubbles. She was so pretty skinny legs and a huge monofin Lol ;) good luck

I was told that if done carefully. You can grab a side of your finis monofin in one hand. take the other side and fold it to your other hand (think like a taco shell) and carefully insert it through the wast and down into the fluke....

BUT if you have to alter it anyways. possibly add a zipper to the bottom or side of the fluke for easy inserting and removal. preferable zippers are plastic ones as they dont rust

what I did with mine, is to leave the bottom open, but to include what could best be described as a pocket.

The bottom of the fluke is open for about 60-70% of it's width, so the monofin can be added or removed with the normal stretch of the fabric. and the 'pocket' is to basically hide the otherwise bright yellow monofin from the black spandex tail :)

it works for me. Hard to describe how it would work. Best thing I can think of is a pillow case. Atleast some pillow cases anyway, have an extra piece of fabric at the opening to let you pull over the end of the pillow once it's been inserted into the case.

Finis Rapid (and I would assume Wave) monofins are flexible enough to fold. I remove mine all the time by folding it in half (kind of like a taco), and carefully sliding it into the fabric. Once the monofin is in the tail, you can let go and adjust it. Once its folded in half, it wont stretch or tear the fabric as badly. Just don't do it all the time, because I would imagine that it wouldn't be good for the monofin to fold it constantly.

As you can see in this pic (http://mernetwork.com/index/attachment.php?attachmentid=6650&thumb=1&d=1348509524) I have a zipper at the end of my fluke to remove the monofin ;)

Are you wanting to take it out because you are afraid you will have mold issues if you leave it in the tail? Or just so that you can use it outside of the tail...? I was wondering because from my experiance you don't have to take the monofin out of a spandex tail if you don't want to. The spandex drys so quickly, if you hang the tail upside down to dry it won't get moldy! Just my $0.02 :)

explained already here:http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2909-MONOFINS-THE-OFFICIAL-THREAD putting it in and taking it out

No i have to take the monofin out so that i can alter the tail and make it smaller. I'm just worried that i won't be able to get it back in lol

I left the side of the fluke of my tail open as I didn't want to put in a zip or ties at the bottom, much like making a stuffed toy or cushion, I slid the monofin into the hole then sewed it closed with the fold on the inside, as my fabric is quite thick you can notice it if you know where to look but for lycra spandex you won't be able to notice. my next tail design has a less complicated fluke shape so the zip at the tip will work fine :)
