View Full Version : Tail Designs - public tail base & weekly designs by Koral -

So here it is, I've decided to post my design creations inspired only by fish. I expect to supply a design every week (give or take) that I am not only showing off, but you can USE! As in, make a tail from the design! Send it to a tailmaker!
I am also supplying a black and white base for your own design use. You can take it into a computer program (such as photoshop, paint tool sai, etc and put the image on "multiply" and color OVER it), or print it out and color away, re-scan and show it off to us! I made the end of the fluke a light color so you could trace over it, or draw a new fluke trim of your own!
With use comes responsibility and rules... ok, more like guidelines.
Please leave the credits, and link back to this thread if you upload any photos of you in the finished piece. And show me, too! I'd love to see!
Let me know if you use the base for your own colored design so I can admire! Or link your thread here so I can go look.
Do not claim this base as yours, do not redistribute the base without my permission. This is only for you guys. :)

Got a fish you would like to see me recreate as a mermaid tail? Let me know!
Fish only. No exceptions. Even if you're someone I adore.
If I get enough requests, I will make a merman version as well.
Here is a small collection of free art programs you can use to color on the base.

Thank you and you're welcome!
If the angle of the mermaid's tail is too awkward, I can make the tail head-on. :) When I was designing, I liked to have a little awkwardness so I could tell how the markings would "move."

Okay Saphira. :) Blue Goldfish will be next week's design. I would be doing this more than weekly, but at present I am going through a plateful and need to get started on a commission as well!
Would you like to supply me with a desired image of a blue goldfish? I'm coming up with all kinds and shapes of blue "goldfish." :P Or, I can just look for a goldfish and make it blue myself!

I hear ya. I never want to "grow up." Responsibilities sure. Stop having fun and expressing my creativity? Never.
Update:
I finished putting the fins on the new design, but my tablet freaked out and I don't feel like rebooting it right now. Gotta get ready really soon, so I will finish later! I am really excited to show this one, I added a "goldfish feature" that would also hide the heel very nicely.

The design features a second fluke attached to the back heel. It would be made out of whatever fabric the rest of the tail is made of - namely the main fluke section. Neoprene and lumiere paint would probably be best for this design, versus spandex! You could do sheer fabric for the secondary fluke but it may not look as tied-in to the rest of the tail.
Enjoy! Next up is a red velvet wrasse and Nykur's oarfish request.

Oooh my goodness. This is going to be my new addiction on this site. Bravo!

11-05-2012, 12:29 AM
Thanks iblondie. :3 I was going to make the dorsal extend further down the legs, but I wasn't sure craft-wise how others would like that. Anyone can always extend it if they make something from it. It would be awesome to see how the dual-fluke looks underwater.
So I don't double post - here is another design for you.
(This was to be my personal design saving for a Mermaid Creations LLC tail, but after seeing enough pictures of me in such vivid colors, I am going GOLD and this design is now invalid!)

Wow Koral you are an amazing artist!
And I love that you base your designs very religiously when it comes to matching the actual
fish itself.
Wonderful work! I'll certainly be watching this thread :'D
Woah!!!! Your designs are so beautiful and colors are blended and compliment eachother flawlessly! So cannot wait for more of these :D Fintastic! :thumbs-up:

Thank you guys!
That's the point of my designs. Meticulously pick out more unique fins (and sometimes flukes) to share with the rest of y'all based off of actual fish. Fish were created each with their own unique make, and as mers they are readily available for us to inspire ourselves from. :)

The fins and flukes I draw in each time I start a new design, referencing from the fish I am designing from at the time, sometimes throwing in some artistic liberty. I use photoshop CS5. I possibly don't understand your question, so I hope the answers I gave helped you a little, Tony.

Koral
11-05-2012, 12:08 PM
Uhm...?? You can be an internet pirate and get Photoshop for free, but I recommend you research it yourself. I can't help anymore on that tidbit.
Otherwise there's stuff like, uhh... Paint Tool Sai. But even that isn't free and runs on a trial.
This link here (http://painttool-sai.en.softonic.com/) claims to be "free" but I'm not installing it to find out right now if it's "free" or "free trial." I will try it later, but I love my CS5 too much to switch.
Other than that there's Gimp, Open Canvas. Really you have to pay for everything, there's not an openly free program other than MSPaint - which I must say MS Paint has come a long way. All they are missing is layers. WELL, Open Canvas 1.1 (http://wistinga.online.fr/opencanvas/) is free, and probably your best bet for right now.

I just found MyPaint which is just like Paint Tool Sai (apparently better too). Turns out PTS is outdated, hasn't had an official update since 2008, and has only been "updated" by fans. Explains why mine stopped working months ago and I decided not to bother with it.
Here is the link. It's free. I'm going to give it a try too, since I try to keep up with these things after all.

With your permission i would love to use the Red Velvet Wrasse design for my upcoming neoprene tail! I just have to say it is so gorgeous and one of my favorite fish! Of course Kalani! Show me when you're done! I'm so thrilled to see it!
As a note to anyone, I don't mind if the designs are exactly referenced and used to-the-T, that's the point! But I wouldn't doubt either that many would prefer to put their own twists or make changes to their liking. :D Do what you wish, mers, just let me know it's used, and I so wanna see!

Sirena: Thanks so much, I'm so flattered! And I wouldn't want my designs getting lost or forcing people to browse through pages of chat and fish requests in order to find my work for their inspiration.
Nerine: As I am getting a lot of fish and requests and all that, I must unfortunately admit that I will/can not do *every* request posted to me. On top of that, I must confess that I wish to only do designs from fish. I hope you do not think me rude for this, as I mean no ill will! If I ever run out of finspiration, I will hit up my earlier request posts that I passed on. I am also doing these designs for all to freely use, so if I did do a tail inspired by your post, it would be available for everyone and not reserved solely for you. See below for more information.
Caitlin: That one looks FUN fun fun. Gourami it is, after oarfish. I really appreciate you posting such a colorful fish for me!
Notice:
There are many fish out there that are so unique. Don't be afraid to throw something WEIRD at me, I bet you I could still come up with a unique tail design for everyone!
I remind you all that my designs posted here are free for all to use in their tail creation. I supposed I will throw this out there while it's on my mind!... To have me design a private tail for your use only, I ask that you PM me privately to discuss, and small amount (or small barter) in payment. Custom private designs would not be completed using my public base, but sketched out and colored in the style of "fashion designs." This is so you and/or your tailmaker can see the "flow" of the tail in multiple angles and poses. Not all the sketches will have color, though.
I have been drawing just shy of 16 years, and a freelance artist for almost 10. Meaning, I have received payment for my services. For customs designs, I am not asking a lot, essentially just a tip as thanks for my time spent on something newly drawn up and personalized, meant only for your use, and not public for all.
Thus why I wanted to supply you all with free designs as I have been sharing, done when I have the time. I'm a college student at Art Institute trying to pay her dues and live the dorm life, so financially I have a hard time, and I don't have a lot of spare time to devote to everything I want to do. :) Thanks for reading! I may put this section on the front page if I get any custom requests down the road, but I don't expect it.
You are just too awesome Koral!! So glad we have you here with us :)

Thank you all, sorry I've been missing in action, haven't been on the computer all weekend. I'll be working on the next design (oarfish) hopefully tomorrow before class, after I finish homework. A couple of my classes have been really hectic!
Saphira; You post some really awesome fish to challenge me with, I love it! The blue goldfish was fun to make something unique from (especially for a blue tail with no differentiating markings to set it apart from others), and now this cichlid! It'll be added to the cue for sure. :)
jukumerboii; Well, keep in mind I'm no REAL nor official fashion designer, as in I'm not a pro, so my advice may be all wrong. But I can speak as an artist as if I were painting a picture (instead, someone may potentially wear the "picture). With darker skin I would do hues of red, gold, copper, bronze or something along those lines. Blue, but darker blues would be lovely. Essentially, keep it neutrally darker with your skin tone so your tail doesn't drown you out, so when people see you, they see all of you and not JUST the tail. When I wear brown ensembles I pair it with gold and a blue-green/teal. Brown and blue are my favorite combination, and gold is an adored "color" of mine on its own as well! I'm not much help, but I hope that was somewhat useful. I feel I am not one to speak, as the tail I designed for myself ultimately works with a darker (tan) skin tone, and I'm just average, if a little pale thanks to fall/winter.

You're welcome. :) Another thing that some merfolk do is look at their commonly worn wardrobe. What colors are in your closet? Then, go from there. If you like wearing one combination of colors and you feel it looks best on you, then do that for a tail coloration!
Tails are more than an extension into our inner mermaid, but an expression of our style. On a day to day basis we express ourselves in what we wear, and I feel our tail should reflect in the same way.
Originally, I wanted to have a colorful tail because I love color, and my mersona "lived in tropical waters with coral fish." But when I saw the colors on my skin tone, my build, my overall person, I instead looked to my wardrobe, and not so much my likes and dislikes. (I also absolutely adore pirates, and POTC, and gold, and sparkly things - so went POTC mermaid. Anyway.)

Mandarin Fish are very colourful and would suit a chinese dragon type tail.
Sometimes inspiration comes not from a colour but a shape, so I included the next picture.

Hello Calypso
What exactly am I coloring on my base? The tail is already a tail, so I don't know what I would be doing other than just re-creating it. I do also have my plate full and I am running late on my next design (along with another 2 to follow). I do have a blank tail base you can print out or take into an art program like Open Canvas 1.1 or MyPaint. I have linked these two on the first page (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?3491-Tail-Designs-public-tail-base-amp-weekly-designs-by-Koral&p=44997&viewfull=1#post44997). :)

How long does it take for you to make a design.
On average, 2 - 5 hours? Depends on the level of detail and how distracted I am.
I need to go over to that "goals list" and make a new list for myself because I need to motivate myself as I rush through finals. :(

Haha sorry everyone I just reached a really busy spell and lost track of this. School is demanding - well, life is demanding. Between a paid business card design and a design for a company making an App (not to mention my homework), I'll try to find time to do another design!

I thought this would be cool idea for a mermaid / merman combo, because this fish displays sexual dimorphism, shown in the pic. I think that's the female on the top.
(It's a Bellus Angelfish)
This is a royal gramma, on of my favorites. The way the yellow fades to the purple is gorgeous.

Those are awesome! I wish I was that good at designing my tail. I've tried and tried and tried on several different templates but I always HATE the result xD
http://i50.tinypic.com/alqhid.jpg this is the exact fish I'm trying to base it on. Isn't it gorgeous? I love guppies, they've gotta be my favorite fish.
Here's another fish that would look awesome as a mermaid tail: http://i50.tinypic.com/5mbdwl.jpg
Also, I agree. That Katy Perry dress is drop dead gorgeous. I can't imagine how pretty that would look made into a swimmable tail.

Hey Korel, I don't know if any mermen have requested their own template but was wondering since I have some knowledge of photoshop, could I just get rid of the top half of the mermaid to use to design my tail all while providing credit to you for the design?
Thanks
MerMatt

Sure, just use the bottom half, that's fine. :)
Obviously I've gotten a bit busy for this. I might pick up a design or two later, but not sure. I'll save the boring life details and just say "sit tight" :P

Thanks iblondie. :3 I was going to make the dorsal extend further down the legs, but I wasn't sure craft-wise how others would like that. Anyone can always extend it if they make something from it. It would be awesome to see how the dual-fluke looks underwater.
So I don't double post - here is another design for you.

seriously. they're awesome.
masked nightingale, i saw that fish and had to do something with it :D i used the mertailor's fluke just because it's my favorite besides raven's (so flowy :D).
i think it's probably HUGE, so i apologize for that :/ also, the smaller one is the back (the line down the middle would be a dorsal), and the back was very rushed... i got lazy T-T

Hello Koral. I just wanted to share with you my coloring idea for my first tail. I used your template and I'm so thankful for it. Here is my tail idea. The colors are blue, silver & black. I used a blue pen for the blue, the gray pencil is for the black areas and or paint, and the white will be silver.
