Can I ask you all a question?:D

Some time ago I read a fanfic about mermaids and there was a tail description, and I have been drawing that tail a few times,
but everytime I get stuck at drawing the fluke, I have no idea how it should look, even with the description I have no idea what to draw. :confused:
Here’s the description:

‘The fluke was wide, almost twice my shoulder length.
It was ragged at the end of the actual fin,
and two bony supports held up the thinner fluke in between.’

Can you help me by drawing your interpretations of this fluke and show/send me your designs here?
(I will not copy them exactly, but only take inspiration from them)

I just sketched something sloppy together, it's hard to do symmetrical things with a touchpad, haha ;)
Yeah I was thinking something inspired by Ariel could work too!

Yeah, symmetry is hard, even when I'm drawning on paper.
But I have figured out a way to be able to draw symmetrical!
I also used it to draw all the designs in my 'Tails all year round' thread.
(That design pile has grown to 55 design over the last 3 years :))

Here ya go! I made them based on the description, and added coloring for a swamp dwelling mer. More earth tones. One with black throughout and one without. I also added some side fins. :)

Ooh. That sounds good. Maybe the Orange in striped on the fluke and fins, the dark blue as a background on the fins with white fraying the edges? An the green lining the belly, fading to white. And the darker shades area near the pelvis the dark blue fading to a darkish green?

I designed my first shark tail and possibly the first one that's actually modeled after real shark tails with vertical flukes. I designed it to be swimable, but please, keep in mind that this design may only be suitable for aesthetic purposes. The swimable version would need to be a lot longer than a typical mer tail so as to allow the feet to be smoothed into the tail so no heel is visible and a longer tail would allow for better propulsion through the water with the minimal movements required to swim side-to-side (the movement would be centered in the hip/waist area of the body). They would require no scales because shark skin appears smooth. The monofin would simply be on its side and would not actually need to be a monofin (as they wouldn't be housing feet) but a mere fiberglass sheet cut into the appropriate shape(s) should do the trick for the fluke and also the additional larger shark fins at the top of the tail could require fiberglass sheets to keep them straight and allow for easy maneuvering through the water. The knees and feet should be thoroughly bound for a more fluid shark-like movement (and to diminish knee pain from swimming unconventionally). The labor that would normally go into making scales would be eliminated and instead, that funding would go into the extra silicone required to make a tail this size and shape. Please, feel free to use this design for your future dream tail, but do not remove my signature ("AR" is for Ashley Rodriguez, my legal name, and the lotus flower is obviously for my mersona, Lotus), and make sure to give me the appropriate credit for my design. (I have the original copies and evidence to copyright the design). Once I have the money to begin making tails myself, I am planning on attempting to make one of my own. Let me know what you guys think! :)

Thank you!! It's going to be really fun! It shouldn't be harmful or painful if designed correctly so that the tail does most of the work and the body is not required to move too abnormally. Gotta keep trying! :)

Also, our spines are made to move vertically, not laterally. It's an interesting idea in theory, but in reality, I doubt it could be used for more than very short swims, film or modeling work, or dry gigs.

I'd like to see it happen, though! Engineering the mechanics to make it work would be an interesting challenge.

Very true! I need to study shark anatomy and mechanics and maybe I'll be able to get somewhere with the design to make it swimable without being harmful or outrageously expensive. Hmmm Lotus, you think you could do something with my tail design? I'm rethinking the side fins, which I originally though of as being similar to the dorsal, just starting on the hip and wrapping around the back.
My idea was to have colors that match my tattoo, but still have it look predatory. Like a hawk if it were tropical?
Also I have no idea what to do with the fluke. I really like the long one by mertailor, the calypso by finfolk, and the newest one by Raven that Raina got for mega rapidash

Yes you are right Mermaid Celeste I wouldn't be offended if someone wanted similar I just don't to share it till I am getting it made as then I don't mind if someone has something similar I would just be devastated if someone took my dream tail before I could get it made so I will share it when I am actually getting it made rather than before then if someone wants to do something similar they can it doesn't phase me then! I'm planning on becoming a tailmaker, starting in April/May. I'll start by making one for a friend of mine and if all goes well, I'll create an Etsy listing in my shop and post the URL here and in my own tailmaking thread in the appropriate forum. I'm planning on using some of the funds from the tails I sell to pay for my husband's and my plane tickets to Japan for a mission trip we're going on this summer. :)

My question is: If I was to start making them and they actually turned out pretty decently, would you purchase a tail from me? I want to know if I'll have any potential customers. No commitment required, I won't bother you about it. Just curious as to how high the demand is for tails. I'm pretty sure I'll be charging around $2500 for an average and/or custom tail, not including shipping (since I know a lot of mers are outside of the U.S. so it might cost more than I can afford). Does that sound like a good deal? Please, let me know your opinions! I know it won't be as amazing as a Pearlie tail, but it could be a good starter! <3

Pretty! Have you made one in fabric? If its all silicone, its going to weight more than 30lbs methinks. And with your bung ankle, swimming in silicone tail might be a tad difficult.

Been trying to combine the Little Mermaid and Sailor Moon to make my dream tale. I think I finally managed to pull it off and I love it. I'm not sure if anything else should be added though.

I'm open to ideas or opinions. You're even welcome to make any changes to it's design or improve it.

I'm doing a make over on my Trout Fish tail. This is the fluke I have come up with.
Its that shape as I'll be putting my practice fin (Finis Foil Monofin) into it.
It will be painted fins as the fabric I used for Trout Fish fins has faded a lot as it is not swimsuit material but the rest of the tail still looks new except for the fins. Which is why I'm doing a makeover.

I'm still a little undecided on the fluke... Can't decide if I want the middle point to be longer or the same size as the rest. As it stands, it will be slightly curved to follow the shape of the foil monofin. It has to be a practical fin. Especially on crowded days, I once ended up sharing a lane with 5 other swimmers!! Silly school holiday inflatable dragons...

This is my design for a Xenomorph (The alien from the film 'Alien') inspired tail. I was going to make it a full body tail, but decided against it and designed a top too. When I get the money I would love to make this tail a reality. Plus, it's unisex! (The top being female though)

Oooh!! That color scheme sounds amazing!! I can't wait to see what you do with it!! If you would like to make your own, I recommend splurging on silicone. It's more durable than latex, as far as I've heard, so it's worth it in the end! That's just my two cents, though. I know the struggle with trying to get a tail, but not having the cash to shell out all at once! That's why I'm so grateful for PearlieMae. She's so talented and generous because she offers 6 AND 12 month payment plans!! I couldn't be happier. If you need any help with the design process, feel free to message me! <3

How about something like this? The purple came out a little brighter here compared to your drawing, but that can be changed ofcourse.

So I posted this earlier in a Finfolk thread but I'll add it here too (thanks to CowgirlMermaid and Julianne for directing me over here :))
The fluke is one of the styles offered by Finfolk (really liked the shape). The coloring I ended up basing off the skin on my upper arms (light peachy color with darker pink mixed in and lots of freckles, plus I'm super pale so you can see the veins in my wrists/hands very easily). I'm really happy with how it came out and it's definitely my dream tail. I have to save it for it (which will take a while) so for now it'll stay on paper. And in the meantime I need to work on training so that when I eventually get said tail I'll actually be able to swim. Anyway, here's what I came out with:

Finally found the mermaid maker I keep seeing icons and such from. Tried it out with similar coloring and fins to what I would like my ideal tail to look like (a bit more gradient and a bit different dorsal/pectoral fin shape but still). Though I also really like the coloring on this one (it's a bit more fantasy than my other one). Maybe I'll someday be able to save up for both (right....)?

I did some quick design sketches to show my photographer friend (who inspired me to make this tail). The fluke and fin shapes may change a little, but they'll be chiffon with boning in the darkest section, so I want them to still be flowy. Body references from SenshiStock on DA.

And these are the fabrics. The top three are the sheers (far left is almost exactly my skintone, and a flowy top (lined) will be made out of it). The lighter ivory lycra will line the sequin (as it's semisheer), and the bottom right fabric swatch will be the back of the tail.

I have found MY fluke! I know it took several tails to figure it out, it is me. It swims beautifully in the water, and I am getting used to the weight of this tail more than my other Finis Foil tails.

I totally will! I ordered swatches of a bunch of stuff, as you can see, and I'm planning on lining the whole tail with another layer of lycra. I like the look of the Neoprene tails (being more solid and smooth), but since I can't get these patterns in that, obviously, I'm layering up. I may end up making a neoprene lining at some point, I'm not sure. I think it's a little thin to just be one layer on its own, though, for sure.

Thank you! It'll be my first mermaids tail, but not my first time working with these fabrics/techniques. I can't start working on it until I get the new monofin (I decided on a mahina mermaid monofin) and I can't order it until after my little bro's wedding due to travel finances. But I'll probably get the fabrics/make the patterns then get the monofin.

That looks like it'll be amazing! It may not be very practical for swimming though, as lots of extra material adds drag- but who cares! as long as it looks gorgeous :D

Lovely fabrics! Make sure you do test swims with it before making your tail. Like pin scraps of it to your swimsuit and go for several swims, so you know if its durable or not. Some fabrics will start breaking down after 1 or 2 swims.

Oceanwhisper- I've actually taken that into consideration, which is why I've been training with a very small and not stiff monofin (finished foil, it's ridiculously yellow) and a very strong swimmer.

Mermaid Jaffa- I'm actually making sure all the materials are synthetic fibers, and all metallic sheens are not a coating but part of the fiber itself. I will be testing them as well though!

A tip for swimming with lots of drag- swim slowly. The faster you swim the more energy you waste, you will actually get farther swimming slowly. I used to be on a swim team and they made us swim in baggy clothes sometimes. My tail now has quite a bit of drag, but if I swim slow I look graceful and cool. Swimming fast looks goofy because I'm barely moving lol
