For color scheme, I would say to think of what you are portraying.

A hunter of the deep. A fearsome predator with high intimidation. What colors would this creature have in the wild?

They would want to blend into their territory so they could strike hard and fast on their prey, unseen until the last moment which is far too late for the victim. They would not have bright happy vivid colors. They would don shades of darker blues, greens, dirty browns or coppers, and black markings. Maybe they're blending into seaweed, perhaps the ocean floor with beds of corals and hidden mini caves. Or hiding in the rocks waiting for the opportune moment. If any bright colors, I would say "warning" colors such as red and yellow, like the unfriendly coral snake. If I saw all these colors (or some) on a spiny yet frilly mermaid, I would immediately recognize it was a predatory type.

Good luck, it looks like a great design, I hope you show us progress as you build it!

Well don't we just have a way with words! You have created such a beautifully eerie image in my head. lol

I love this idea! Maybe try a deep purple fade to grey for the tail body, and accent with yellow/red/black for fins/details?

Aw don't give up hope. Those people just like to stick to what media has showed them, and for mermaids they normally like to put icing on the cake. Just because they don't like how mermaids are originally portrayed, doesn't mean you should give up hope. ;D
If it were me, I'd say something like 'Mermaids are man eating creatures, don't be mad at me because you pooped out too many sprinkles from watching shows from Disney or something.' lol, not to bash Disney or anything, but just making a general example. XD

I'm gonna give you some advice; "it's not what people do to you, it's what you let them do to you!"

Don't worry what other people think!

Here's my 2p (pence, I'm a Brit after all! Lol) I'd go and look at flukes and colours of predatory fish, sharks, dolphins, orcas, eels, pike, angler fish, look at their colour schemes shapes of their tails - 80% of them are built for speed it all depends on their hunting method and the type of food they eat - if you're mermaid is a man-eater then mabye she might be the type to sit on a rock and lure the sailors in? In that case she would be insanely beautiful/alien looking paler and more virginal in colouring with long beautiful floaty tendrils........ Or again as a man eater is she a more sneak attack mer? In that case beauty would be out of the window and she's be smooth with just a fluke with no extra fins and coloured dark - built for stealth

Anyway I hope this helps! Xx

Those Fangs are Wicked!

I have considered getting Full sclera contacts for eyes like those, but according to my optician my particular eye-sight malfunction means they wouldn't fit. Plus you cant wear them for too long because they block all oxygen from reaching your eyeball. http://extremesfx.com/black-sclera.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxcMVYsnXUs

Instead I am looking at Circle lenses wondering if my pale green eyes can pull them off.http://coseye.net/goods-268.html

I love it! I think you should go with it!

I've worn that brand of teeth before (though the Lucius ones). They're relatively comfortable and stay in place pretty well if you do the molding right (it took two or three tries for me), but mine broke after only wearing them 3 or 4 times for short periods (just to test them out with my outfit and then the actual breakage happened while I was wearing them for real after maybe an hour). I don't know if I handled them too roughly or bit too hard together with them in or if they're just that fragile, but I just wanted to let you know. You also tend to slur/have a lisp if you talk with them (that may be why they broke), so you may want to be a non-speaking mer if you go with them. And they distort your face some -- they push your mouth out further and it looks a bit odd/inhuman. I can post a photo of it after I get home tonight if you want so you can kind of see what I'm talking about with the distortion. I ended up just wearing the top ones as it made it a bit easier to speak, as I would not make a good quiet anything :P

I was told that denture places (and maybe even your dentist) can make custom ones. I haven't looked into it personally, but my UK friends say it's about 50 pounds or so there. I have a feeling it's a lot more expensive here in the US.

They really arent made for speaking but looking in human is my goal

I'm really excited to be working on this! I'm a really girly mermaid and this is just so different and so awesome!! It's going to be a real challenge, but I'm so inspired by the idea of a predator mermaid! I can't believe anyone ever gave you a hard time about this design. This is going to be one awesome tail and I'm really looking forward to getting my clay out and sculpting the fluke and extra fins! This is going to be just awesome in silicone!!

What do you care what other people's opinions are? F*** them!

As for predatory colors, I immediately thought of the colors of an oil slick on black, but then again, I thought of the color scheme of a blue ringed octopus...16250

I really want to see how this turns out! I love the ideas of predatory mermaids. I even like the idea of the old legends of them being so beautiful they are deadly. Like luring sailors to their death. It's like the ocean in a way, being so beautiful yet it can be so deadly. But I'm so excited to see how it turns out, good luck!!! :)

My guess is the OP is still of a younger, impressionable age :p

I also fail to see why someone would bash the design, because it's quite colourful and pretty.
Dark and dangerous looking mers with sharp nails and fangs on top are awesome.

I've wanted to make a video of me in a complete snaketail outfit (with snake hair and fangs) for quite some time now, and if I get around to it, I certainly won't care about snippy comments how unmermaidy that is or whatever :P

Her problem was that "i don't understand what is is like to be a mermaid as part of the community and to understand the meaning of being a mermaid"(her words not mine)
even though I've been part of the community for some time:mad:

on another note i am a predatory fish not seen by most
I don't understand why some people just don't like the idea of a SCARY Mermaid

yay for deep sea creepy fish :)

well, that's complete bullcarp.
you can safely ignore that.

And in folklore, there are a LOT more dangerous, man-eating mermaids than nice and friendly ones :p
blame Disney! no one seems to read the real stories anymore.

Aziara

There's not a one-size-fits-all 'meaning of being a mermaid'. Everyone's definition of that is going to be a bit different--And that's a good thing! Disney-style mermaids are all well and good, but no one should want the entire mer-community to be nothing but Ariels. I personally think scary mers are awesome!

*snorts* Since when is there a deep meaning to being a mermaid? If so, I missed the notice and I guess I should and hide from the Mermaids Who Really Get It. I just like to play dress up and swim around in a tail. This girl is probably in my freshman English class trying to Skype with boys during class and calling her BFF "n*gga". Feel free to Ignore with a capital I.

Wow. XD I can't believe some people have a thing against darker/evil mermaids. My tail is even going that direction a bit, as I'm basing it more off dragons than pretty fishes. Haha. :)

Can't wait to see yours turn out!

I actually think your 1st picture is VERY womanly, sexy and femme fetalle, Queen of the damned kind of vibe. I LOVE IT! Idont think it is harsh at all! It is not little girlish, more like a mature, sexy woman vibe. The colors and 2nd sketch can be fine tuned some imo, but there is nothing butch or scary about this design at all! I love the 1st sketch! It has all curved lines. The front fins on the 2nd do feel lightly more pointy, sharp/ less fluid in the 2nd. The dorsal is Gorgeous!...very sensual curves.. So the 1st is my favorite.

For a predator I would probably go with darker grey on top (your back when worn) and almost white on the belly or any other dark/light combo like this. This is the scheme that sharks, dolphins and other predators have so they blend into the sea bed from the top and blend into the brighter water surface when viewed from underneath.

My tail is also going to be darker/deep sea styled.

That's ridiculous. Being a mermaid is what it means to you, personally. *rolls eyes, and flicks fin* She obviously has no idea what she's talking about.

Some of my favorite fish are the deepest deep sea monsters, like the creepy and bizarre angler, or gulper eel, or vampire squid. I may opt for the pretty mermaid look for myself (most of the time), but I think actual mermaids are on the deepest parts of the ocean floor, battling fang-filled beasts for food.

curves are distracting I am trying to go away from the sexy womanly look
I like the CREATURE IDEA
I am no where near human
Flowy womenly fins are DISTRACTING
I'm a spiney mermaid i am quick to the point quick to the kill
Tattered like ive been in fights stuff like that is what my tail is all about
