View Full Version : Starting my 'Manatee' tail

I'm starting my first tail that I'm making myself. I thought about a sequin tail, but I'm not sure I have the patience for that. Instead, I'm doing a 'manatee' tail. I'm calling it my manatee tail because of the fluke shape and the fact that I'm not having tons of bright colors on it. It's going to be fairly simple. It will be skin color for the base and sandy brown colored swirls.

Yes, I'm painting the swirls on myself. They are going to be brown so I'm hoping it will look like tattoos almost, that or the bottom of a river if you're looking at it from the surface. Either way that's the plan

I got my neoprin in today! And yes, I know neoprin isn't as good as neoprene but its got to hold up better than my fabric tails and I can get a good three years out of them.

What you might do Gem, add some wide stripped elastic at key stress points~ hips, waist, knees, etc... It will help provide a better structure for the neoprin to maintain... Similar to a skeletal structure

Started painting. I never guessed how long painting takes. I spent five hours and barely got a foot of swirls done

Yeah, painting takes a lot of time an effort. It is well worth it in the end though ;) you will see!

OK, that picture was taken a while ago. it's changed a lot and I'll get an updated picture up soon. but first, guess what happens when I spend four hours alone in hobby lobby? many things to buy and many ideas to form, but one idea stuck out and I went with it, and now my tail... (pause for dramatic effect) ... GLOWS IN THE DARK! I got permanent glow in the dark paint (haven't water tested it yet) and a stencil and my tail now has really cool swirly spots all over it that glow! I haven't gotten a picture yet for two reasons. 1) still painting and 2) my phone camera won't pick up on the glow, but I will figure it out soon because it looks amazing
