View Full Version : Stay with separate fins or Monofin?

So here's my situation: I got my tail from Mertailor awhile ago, and it's nice and all, but the fins he sent with them are weird. Just to keep the shape of the fluke I have to wear the fins on the opposite feet. ._.
Also, it's harder to swim fluently because the fins move separately.
I'm thinking about a monofin, but the seam on the fluke would keep me from taking it out or getting it on, and I'm afraid of stretching out the fabric or ripping it.

So, do I suffer the two fins or make it work with a monofin?

Help please~ ;U;

I have used separate fins in my tails from the start and have always had a good experience with them. I am much more maneuverable and agile in smaller pools since the total size of my fluke is much smaller. However! That being said, I did just purchase my very first monofin from WaterWay and have to say that it's pretty rad (and huge). I get a lot more propulsion with it and though spinning and turn is a bit more of a challenge given the size, the more I practice with it, the easier it gets.

I guess it's really about personal preference and what kind of look your are going for. Are you planning on reusing the flippers or potential monofin for another tail? If so then I would probably go with a monofin. That's what I'm doing for my next two tails, but then again I'm a little biased since I really do love my new monofin. ;)

Good luck!

Thanks. :3
The tail I have now is the only one I think I'll be getting for awhile (unless I make my own) so I'd love to get a monofin. My mom looked into it and thinks that most monofins are too small. You mentioned the size, mind my asking how big it is? Do they go by shoe sizes?

For sure! They do go by shoe size (or a general shoe size for the adjustable ones) and there is a pretty wide variety of monofins out there that you can choose from. There are even a few mermaids who make/sell custom ones.

The specific one that I've been using can be found here: http://www.freedivinginstructors.com/proshop/gear?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=35&category_id=1

In comparison to my two flippers, it's quite huge and the idea of swimming with it was a little daunting at first. You do need to be very sure of your shoe size though since it is quite a snug fit and the one I have isn't adjustable. Mine feels like an extension of my feet since it fits so snug.

There are a lot of other places worth checking out though. I can't speak for any of the other ones out there (aside from what's listed on my site that I've had personal experience with).

I would do a little sleuthing around MerNetwork since I believe they have more info posted and I believe people have discussed this in other topics as well. It's good to check out what other people have found useful. :)

I've used both and I must say I prefer monofin and think they are worth it

Thanks to all for the input.
I definitely start looking for a good monofin.
