Ok, so I recently started a new blog. And, I was thinking (specially since about 90% of it has to do with mermaiding, or there abouts) that I would start copying each post (just the mermaid related ones) and paste them onto this thread. I just want people to know that I will end up talking about some controversial things, my intention is not to start any drama, only to provide an incite into how I see certain things and possibly help others. I do not believe in just sweeping issues under a rug, or draping a sheet over them, trying to hide them. There will be lots of issues that I will bring up and go over, I apologize if anyone gets upset (again its not my intention to start drama or upset anyone, only provide a possibly different angle at which to view situations).

I figure I will start with todays post~

Cost and Quality

Recently I have noticed a LOT of people complaining about pricing of items, specially amongst the mermaiding community. I feel the need to explain some things so that people can understand why things are priced they are, specially since I am a Tailmaker myself.

First, if you want a cheap price for something, expect to get a cheap product. People push for prices to be lower and lower, so producers are forced to make the product with lower quality materials, thus affecting the overall quality of the finished product. People cannot expect a high quality item for an extreme low price. If I made my Premium Tail (which is painted 2mm neoprene plus a monofin) for the price that people have asked me to make it, I would essentially be paying for half the cost of materials to make the tail. The cost of materials alone for a Premium Tail is about $400. That is using good, high quality materials. My prices right now for that specific tail is $470, so you can see that if I lower my prices anymore, I would be making 0 money for the time and work I put into making a tail.

It bugs me a lot just how uneducated people can be. That when it comes to buying something of high value, they take very little to no time to research about products used to make something (such as a mermaid tail). For example, (I hate naming names, but I see this all the time and it bothers me a lot) Mertailor makes a Realistic latex tail for around $500. Now, he states clearly in the product description that it is made with NEOPRIN, which is an extremely cheap option to neoprene. Neoprin is a very poor quality material, and when considered that it will have latex molded over the top of it there are some things that people need to think about. Latex stretches yes, but has very little "bounce back", layer that over a poor quality material that is already lacking its own bounce back and you can imagine the quality of item you are going to get. (If you would like to see the difference between Neoprin and Neoprene, I have personally done a comparison between the 2 with photos and video. It can be found here (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?3374-Neoprene-Vs-Neoprin).)

Note: I want to state now that I have not personally bought one of Mertailors Realistic tails, so the information I am providing is from working with these materials myself. I am in NO way bagging, bashing, or trying to knock Mertailors reputation. I have personally spoken with the owner, Eric, and found him VERY pleasant to speak with (Even though I had heard differently from numerous people).

As you can see, there is a direct correlation between cost and quality of an item, no matter what the item. I hope this has helped at least one person in making a decision on any item that they buy.

Can't wait to see more of these, they are very educated and reasonable, not huge rants and drama like i've seen on other blogs :)

Thank you Kalani. I try to look at things from an extremely neutral point of view :) Plus I'm a lot smarter than people think

EDIT: Oh, and if anyone would like to see my posts that I make that are non-mer related, you can see them here (http://sea-witch.blogspot.com/)

New blog post from this afternoon. Decided I'd share the troubles I have gone through so far with my tail.

~A Mermaids Tail~
I have been sitting here debating all day how I wanted to write this post out, and I think I've finally got it figured out (for the most part)...

I know there are a lot of people who tell you that all you need in order to be a mermaid is to know it and feel it in your heart. Well, I do know and feel in my heart that I am a mermaid, but I (unlike a lot of mers) feel like I need to EARN my tail and finally call myself a true mermaid. I feel this way because this is how I was raised. Anything good I was to get, was supposed to be earned.

So over the past few months I have been designing by trial and error, my first proper mermaid tail (scales and all). I was originally going to make it out of swim fabric, but the fabric I had bought ended up being very CHEAP (theres that cost and quality coming into play there) fabric. I got it all put together and sewn, and I was so happy with it. I went to do my first photo shoot in it, and when I was getting out after the set at the last location, the seams ripped out completely. I was devastated. Here I was calling myself a mermaid, and now I felt as though I didn't deserve that title because I failed with my tail.

Shortly after I began researching and designing a new tail, getting several other mers advice on where I should order neoprene from. This tail would be better than the last, far more sturdier than before. Soon I found the shell shaped sequins that people have been talking about, the same sequins Mermaid Hannah uses on her tails. I was absolutely ecstatic. I ordered some of the colors that I wanted to play with for my tail. I had been planning on doing Iridescent Black, Light Coral, Dark Mauve, and Burgundy (which was nearly the same color as the mauve, just a few shades different). I found the was I wanted to lay them out on the tail and realized I would need many more than what I had first ordered. I got onto the site only to discover that the Light Coral, the color I was going to use to blend into the waist (the color happened to match my skin tone perfectly), was no longer in stock and had in fact been discontinued. I had stumbled upon yet ANOTHER obstacle. Beginning to lose faith that I would ever finish this tail, I began asking if anyone had a package or 2 of the light coral sequins. At that point I was willing to pay double plus shipping costs.

Sadly, I could find no one who had any of the sequins I needed. So, I decided to check the site again. Still no Light Coral shaped sequins, BUT I noticed they have the Light Coral in a couple different sizes of the cupped circles. As well as a Nude color, and even a Ecru. I took a chance and figured I would order them to see what I could come up with. And I'm glad I did, now do I not only have enough to go entirely around the waist, I also have the shell shaped Light coral to blend DOWN into the other colors so they fade into the waist. My faith in this tail had been restored... Only to be stalled out by another obstacle.

I lacked the $160 to be able to order the 2 sheets of neoprene I needed. The neoprene, the most important part of my tail. I was so close, all I needed was this one thing. I've waited 2 1/2 months to be able to order my neoprene, and I was finally able to order it. It should be shipping out today, so I should have it within a week. All I have left to order is a few secret materials I need to be able to finish it. Pictures of it will be taken before the sequins are put on, mainly for an example photo for Shadow Fancy's Premium Tail (it will have a layer of paint under the scales), but also to show everyone my progress.

I am SUPER excited to finally be able to finish my tail, and here it is looking like I will be able to finish it by Christmas, or perhaps New Years. Either way, I will have my dream tail finished within the next 2 months. And with hope and a little faith, it will hold together MUCH longer than the first had.

I look forward to updating everyone as to the progress once my Neoprene finally arrives.

But for now, I'm headed back to the Deep.

I just wanted to let everyone know, I am going to be doing a post within the next week or 2 with an interview with the Mertailor. Eric has agreed to do an interview with me. There will probably be more information in this interview than anyone has ever gotten in an interview with him. I will warn everyone now that it WILL be a very long post, but I encourage anyone to read it fully. I am honored that he opened up with me about certain information. And it is because of this information that I encourage everyone who is interested in his tails, to read the interview fully. If anyone would like to know the information I speak of, you will have to read the blog when it is posted, I wont be posting the information until then.
