I dont want to be selfish, but the moment I saw that first picture I just HAD to have it. If she sells it, maybe she should put it at auction so we all have a fair chance? I dont want to loose out on something I really want because someone saw the post before me, but I also dont want to push anyone down a flight of stairs just to get something I want, if you know what I mean.

I kind of agree with you but truth to be told, after some thinking, I'm not much of a fan of these white stripes and the angler fluke. This is very original and unique but I prefer something more classic :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm more of a classic merman myself. For some reason this ultra exotic design just reads a little more masculine to me. I guess because in nature a lot of times the males have more contrast in their fins, feathers and fur. It would still look great on you! :-)

Thanks but here's the thing : I don't think I'm the man for exotic things.
Most of the time, I like things to be simple and classic, it gives the best look without saying "trying too hard" or "cliché".
I'm not sure if I'm making sense... :thinks:

Since she said she might keep it for herself I compared it to the measurements of the other tail she recently sold, but that is just a guess....

top-ankles: 40, top-hips: about 9, top- knees:25, waist: 24, hips:34 , knees: 20, and ankles: 14

I guess in my clothing I tend toward classic with an edge but for a fantasy creature I may go a little more balls to the wall. Does that make sense?

It does make sense.
Yet, in my opinion, I don't think something has to be more exotic to look like a fantasy creature while we have the power to make it according to our character.

I don't think so. We don't have tailmakers that good in Europe and it would cost me too much to ship my tail internationaly for a new paint job.

This is why I have the pressure that it has to be perfect.

After putting it on auction, there isn't even a way to guarantee Ash or I will get it. This is good for Raven though, and if I don't get it I'll just commission something similar (but not too similar) from her when she has some slots available. This isn't about winning, and although I do like to be fair I consider this more of an art auction. I apologize if any of that seems heartless, but it's quite the opposite for me. I love the way that tail looks and I would be doing a disservice to myself by not pursuing it. I would probably regret it for a long time, and regret sucks. I think the auction is a good idea cause, just chucking it out there, I kinda want that tail too and I don't think it's fair at all to be calling dibs on it through a forum site that not all of her clients use. Email, slightly different matter and on that note you two won't likely have to worry about me too much because I'm on the larger side when it comes to tails. I love looking at all the pretty tails Raven is reselling but they're all miles too small for me. I would love it if it fit, and was within my budget but at the same time I doubt it will happen just because of the sizing.

I love the oval scales! They're a pain for making seams but I think that pattern is my favorite. Too bad it doesn't match the scales on the tail, though.

Yeah I know I was lucky to order a tail period let alone bid on one of her tails whoever gets it will be one lucky mer. The price for the tail was over 3000 plus it will probably be more since the custom top and accessories are included so that's probably $4000 as a starting bid

I saw that too, but she's just a kid who really wants a tail. She's a member on here too so it's a good idea to try to remember how excited kids can get! It's a really beautiful tail so I do understand how it would be easy to get over excited at her age! :)

I'm a size 8, but I have very wide feet and I got a large and it's VERY comfortable. The Medium according to Finis website fits female america sizes 7.5-9, with the large going 9.5-11.

I think she makes tails because its her passion and she loves making people happy. She did number crunching just to see how to give a lower price on tails so people could afford them. There's a chance she'll charge more for custom but I doubt she will raise the prices. Even if she does it's worth so much more than she charges right now.

whoa whoa folks. the tail, if you commissioned it, would still cost around 4k at least. Her tails are 3k plus several hundred dollars extra for all the extra fins and trimming. Plus you've got the whole extra custom ensemble there via top and accessories. I think that's actually an accurate price to what someone would pay and if anything she's only getting a couple 100 or more, (though it's free shipping in US so not really?). And still less than a MVD tail. :p If I had 5k right now, I'd be buying it. lol I was agonizing to Raven because I *was* expecting to have around that now, but it's running late so I couldnt bid ;)

The tail would SELL for over four thousand. Cost is a completely different issue. Materials cost is just part of the equation. One does have to consider the labor and the talent involved, artistic ability, years of product development, etc...but many of those considerations go into every tail she makes going forward. Make no mistake, though, 4k also represents a decent profit. Not a mere couple hundred bucks.

My comment was a comment on how people bid on things on ebay, or any auction, for that matter, not the thing being bid upon.

Not to have at least a fifty percent kill fee and non-refundable deposit in place for a bespoke item like a performance qualify full silicone tail is not a good business decision. You have to have your materials costs covered at the very least before one lick of work even begins! Graphic design, tailored suits, wedding dresses, web sites... there's no reason custom mermaid tails shouldn't be included in that business model.

I feel like no refund should be given at all. I didn't even realise she gave refunds if you changed your mind. You pay in full for your tail before it starts, if you decide you don't want it at the end, that's cool but you're not getting you're money back. Maybe a little brutal but it's about as much as they deserve. I understand that some people do undergo certain circumstances but if you may not have the money to get yourself out of trouble then you shouldn't be spending it on a tail.

Hey all! Been a while since I've posted....

So, Congrats to MermaidMechanic! You have one awesome tail now!!

And as for the "base price" of the tail, it isn't $4,000 instead it actually is $3,650. Raven said it herself on her page. After I ordered my tail (and probably a few others, too) she did a price adjustment and dropped her performance tail price from $3,000 to $2,600.

So, the tail alone would not have been a "$4,000 tail" as has been stated. and custom fins don't cost extra... just the fins are extra. And there wasn't a custom fluke, just the dragon part on the front, which would probably be extra.

All in all, yeah... wanted to clear that up. :-)

I might have photo shoots soon, but I need to do a temp fix on my fins... I can't afford to ship my tail to Raven yet. :-(

Oh, I can, but she didn't get a chance to do what she wanted with my fins. I was going to send it back so she can finish up the little things. :-) I know a bit of black has scrapped off my fluke. :-( Not enough for public notice, but when I was cleaning it I saw that. Overall, though, damn good tail and I love it with every fiber of my being. When Raven made that tail, she truly made a piece of me. I have felt so confident, amazing and just stunning. I have felt more myself than ever before. ^-^ Okay... I'm done. :-P

And yes, Raven did go into her hermit cave. :-) She's working hard!

I just got lavacore booties and oh my god they work better than neoprene! Neoprene tends to cause rubbing (not enough to cause a blister) but a rash or rub mark so I switched to lavacore so not only are my feet way happier but also warm =]

you don't really notice it.....They aren't water tight but it takes a while for the water to full soak in. They're water 'resistant'
like it says they have a water proof lining but the water can just come in through the top. but if you walking along the beach in them your feet don't get wet.....or sandy for that matter :D

I dreamt I received my email from Merbella's with a sneak peak of my tail and it was the wrong color. It was light blue and pink stripes and looked awful. LOL I was so upset and tried explaining to her it wasn't right. Then in my dream, I realized I had been dreaming and contacted her again. Now it was red with some weird belt like thing. I told her it wasn't right and was supposed to be blue/purple, ect and that I needed it for a gig in April and she told me she would not refund me, not remake it, and told me to leave her alone. She totally looked like the Snow Queen in 'the lion, witch, and wardrobe' movie...LOL..I was so relieved to wake up. I woke up at exactly 5:55 am and made a wish quickly that my tail would be perfect :)

I had nightmares that my markings were badly spray painted on and the fins were all wrong. XD I'd have nightmares of it being too small... one was really weird where I had to swim to her to get it, but then it was made out of a gelatin thing and was NOTHING like my tail. XD BUT more often than not I had dreams of just being in it. :3 My nightmares were usually size related... I was worried I was measured wrong! But everything turned out fine. :-)

So, don't worry little mers, no matter how long the wait, you'll get a dang good tail!!! ^-^

My blue is UV reactive, but we only had a dinky black light to test it and it was really hard to tell. I could see it glow in spots, so I'm not sure yet. I know that the eyes on my octopus glow!! They are very reactive!

As for the squeeking thing : I don't wear socks in my tail: my feet are pretty wide for the monofin and I almost swim without pulling the straps over my feet. (it takes over half an hout to do one strap over my feet, and then I always struggle on punning on the second one! ==>> HORROR. So, squeeking it is! :D lol

And as for the weird dreams: I still have nightmares of my tail falling apart etc, it's just not fun :p

I suggest you take makeup (or apply it beforehand) as well as tights or leggings, a change of clothes, a couple of towels, and whatever jewelry, tops, etc you want to wear. She will provide some jewelry and tops at the time, but she is more than happy to let you wear your own stuff. Also, take a snack and lots of water!!

Well no. That's not correct at all. I mean there were tones of interested parties who had to back out because it didn't fit them and it's not as if everyone has a spare 6/7 grand lying around to spend on mermaid tails. So that 'had a fair chance' statement is entirely inaccurate.

Also I thought when she first posted a picture of the tail she said 'here's a sneak peak from my new "Sea Dragon" line coming soon" (directly quoted from the first picture of the tail she posted) which leads me to believe she would be making more like it... Of course not the same, because Raven doesn't do that, she encourages everyone to make their designs unique to them. To the general public (those not on the forum and didn't read Raina's post about her saying it's one of a kind) they will all be expecting to be able to order tails like this.


1) Anyone who it didn't fit, that's a situation that could have applied to anyone. If it hadn't fit me, I wouldn't have pursued it and I wouldn't think it was unfair if someone else ended up with it. I would accept that perhaps it just wasn't meant to be.

3) If someone pays for a complete custom tail, she allows them to make the decision about whether or not they want that design available to others. There isn't much reason to spend so much if it isn't unique and one of a kind, its a sound business practice.

I refuse to feel "bad" about winning my tail. I'm going to rock it in happy mermaid bliss because after a day of toiling away at a demanding job that ranges from political panic to excruciating physical labor, I deserve to enjoy the things I have.

Raven told me there will not be another sea dragon tail. It was one of a kind, and there will be future one of a kind mermaid tails. The line typically refers to the type/style of top and accessories (like the Atlantis line) We can't resent people for buying a tail when they've already got one. I mean, I've got two tails from two different makers, 3 if you count my mermaidfx, and 4 if you count the mertailor one I used to have that I gave to mimi. Just be happy someone won it. it really doesnt matter that she already had a tail. There's no rule that tails have to be presented to the community in a fair way. I respect you all, but those comments just kinda come off jealous to me :/ and I'd rather not see the thread dissolve into bantering back and forth over someone winning a tail. I feel like this wouldnt be an issue if it was any other tail maker. In fact, a lot of things that come up here dont' seem to EVER come up with other tail makers. Kinda feels like Raven is held to a different standard that she didn't set for herself IMO.

Personally, I would have been in a bidding war for the tail had it been posted a few weeks later. I outright told Raven I selfishly wanted to buy it because I was worried someone would buy it who never had a silicone tail before and wouldn't know how to treat it. I'm glad mechanic has had silicone experience as I find many first time (not all) silicone tail buyers don't seem to have accurate expectations of what they can put their tail through and the wear and tear. People seem to think just because it cost 3k it's invincible. So I'm happy it's going to someone who will love it and preserve it, it's a work of art I'd hate to see ruined. And I'm not suggesting any of the other bidders would have ruined it (I dont know who the others were) just that it was a concern.

So what sort of makeup did you bring? I don't currently really have any kind of water-proof sealer so did you bring/use anything like that? THANK YOU for saying that! I get messages whenever I show interest in a used tail...I backed out on one of Raven's old tails because I was told that I should leave it for someone else's dreams to come true. While I want everyone to have a tail and be happy, I don't agree that just because we already have a nice tail we can't have another. But also if one plans on pursuing a business like aspect and hiring other mermaids you would need optional tails. I refuse to feel "bad" about winning my tail. I'm going to rock it in happy mermaid bliss because after a day of toiling away at a demanding job that ranges from political panic to excruciating physical labor, I deserve to enjoy the things I have.

Alexis is a common French name as well but I don't complain much about it because I know there are worse French names out there like Eugene, Hubert, Adolphe, Alfred, and so many others. Fortunately, my parents like classic names but not too old so I got this one. At least, I didn't get bullied because of a name ;)

As for Ashley, I love it and the sounding isn't annoying to me. I hope you will appreciate it more in the future because it's really a beautiful name.

I feel sorry for the mers though who would have loved this particular tail, but didn't have enough money to win the auction.

Because of the big interest, I'd like to see more tails with a similar design.
To me, a pod of sea-serpent or sea-dragon mers is so much more awesome than just a single one being a special snowflake.

I don't expect you to understand this point of view.

I get messages whenever I show interest in a used tail...I backed out on one of Raven's old tails because I was told that I should leave it for someone else's dreams to come true. While I want everyone to have a tail and be happy, I don't agree that just because we already have a nice tail we can't have another. But also if one plans on pursuing a business like aspect and hiring other mermaids you would need optional tails. I have experienced that as well. Over the years I have spent thousands on professional Bellydance costumes. My favorite designer is "Bella" located in Turkey. For any dancer to have a Bella is a dream. I have bought all of mine used on a forum similar to this and I have received negative comments at times because of it and b/c the number of costumes I own. I worked hard saving my own money and if I want to spend it on costumes, or tails, or photography gear that is what I chose to spend it on. Even if I already have costumes, camera gear, ect. it is my choice. If I want a costume and it is my size then I will buy it. If someone else really wants it too then, it is first come, first serve. LOL. I can also understand the point of the others, and it is hard to get past your emotions sometimes. When I found that forum, in my beginning performer days, I have felt the same way. I have wanted a costume and lost out b/c someone else got it first, and they already had a ton. I would be mad, feeling like I missed out. I have learned though that if its meant to be, then it will come to me. Otherwise, I just learn patience and eventually I find the perfect one. Hang in there ladies!

What needs to be remembered is that:

A: Raven is running a business. Her business is not a democracy or a charity, nor is she a benevolent ruler deigning to grant a boon to a loyal subject;

B: That particular style may have been a bitch to produce or Raven has other reasons not to make another...and never say never! She might change her mind!;

C: If it's not your size or you don't have the money, it's your tough luck, whether or not the winner of the auction has no tail or a hundred tails.

Being jealous, or crying 'unfair' is petulant and inappropriate. No one ever said life is fair. But don't worry...if you keep the faith, the tail you are meant to have will come to you!

Can't we all just be happy someone on the Network got the tail. At least we know it's in good hands, so I don't see what all the fuss is about. Of course it would be awesome to see more tails of this same design, but it's up to Raven, and we as a community don't have a say in her business because we aren't shareholders. Plus, as has been said before, Raven is incredibly talented, and I'm sure we'll be seeing other new designs to be excited about. :3

I am so psyched just to see a tail like that. Keep in mind, while Raven is not going to copy this tail again, she has said she'd be willing to put double flukes on, etc. If you are creative, an artist will love that and will love to work with you.

The sea dragon tail has two flukes slightly offset from the centerline. I was just pointing out one of the many unique features of this tail.

you beat me to it! I'm really excited because I'm considering a koi design after Raven's recommendation for my next tail. But I'm letting her have full control and make whatever she wants colour/style wise. A lot of people try koi and while I think people have come up with some great ideas, to me personally a lot of them remind me of the colouring and markings of COWS just with orange thrown in. LOL. Everything is so big and blotchy. So I love that she went small with the pattern on this! And I love the fins. All just my personal preference of course.

I hope the new owner is super happy, and keep in mind the above photo is a WIP it's not done yet!

I would agree it's hard to make/see accurate koi fish tails. They do sometimes really look like cows with orange spots thrown in there.

I don't know about the multiple tails, but I know the extra goodies are usually a surprise. Like my scale bracelet. I had no idea she gave me one. :-) I love it though! ^-^

Extra tails = yes, but only when she's able to. She's done clients who have ordered several tails for their companies. But it all comes down to timelines. The goodies are free goodies she gives when she *has* them and generally to say thank you to a client for being extra flexible or patient. Don' expect them, but if you get em, yay!
