You should be fine with a large. According the the competitor size charts, a large is a women's 11.5-14, which is pretty big. Most women have smaller feet than that. I think a 43 is around a 10. Worst case scenario you have to wear some booties to pad it out a bit.

I dont think that was meant to be public Ariel, for the very reason they didnt want anyone's feelings being hurt ... it was pretty clear in the message it was for return customers and clients and not general public. And there was a disclaimer at the bottom.

I perfectly understand Raven and why she did it (she's always so kind and pays attention to other's feelings <3 ) and I get what you mean Raina but we can always try to see it from another point of view: Merbellas loves it's affectionate costumers and gives them something back.
So now all the people are more motivated to order again from Merbellas ;)

Gotta admire Raven's professionalism and commitment to her clients. On the one hand, it's probably a good sign (for her business) that she has so many orders she doesn't have time to work on personal things. Yeah we had a big discussion about the blended top haha. She meant just the skin coloured top, not the translucent waist, which I thought was what she meant so we had this big thing about how much it was.

Note: I do not have a Merbella's tail, with or without a blended waist, but here are my thoughts:

Pros: More realistic, creates a smooth transition between tail and person. Unlike one painted to match your skin tone, this one won't look weird when you tan (or, if you're like me, sunburn).

Cons: I imagine it would look really weird if you have your belly button pierced, or a tattoo anywhere in the area.

General price: I believe those who have purchased the upgrade have said it was $150. Like you said though, it's a very new upgrade so that might change.

Awesome! I saw a couple pics of it but couldn't tell exactly how it was constructed...the clear silicone was a guess. I just know there were two different "illusion" waist bands. The old blend type and then whatever the newfangled one was. :)

All I can say is do it. Hahaha. It's a bit snug to get on because she reinforces it to be able to withstand the wear and tear of putting tails off and on, but once you get a good rhythm going you'll be fine. took me 2 or 3 swims before I figured out the best way to get it on.

Here's a better look at mine. you can see the lines if you look for them. And it tends to come up higher when I'm sitting (up to boobs) because of how I measured intentionally. I think it works well, like a corset.

Hoping to squeeze one last shoot this week. Then this tail will be ready for a new home.
I used the old fins/scales to make this matching top for it. I will most likely include a matching headdress just so its a complete Merbella set. Its an older tail, both monofin straps are broken. Would be perfect for someone who already has a tail and just wants/needs a backup tail or for a casual mermaid who will mostly use it for photoshoots etc. She looks new after all the work. Replaced all the fins with brand new ones. Added a blended waist and Sea Dragon scales. Fixed up any scraps/tears/holes I could find and did a complete re-paint.

Not planning on listing this set to Ebay, but we will go with the best offer if there's a lot of interest.

Raina, you are magnificent and so is that upgraded rainbow tail! :mermaid kiss: Sea Dragon scales are causing me to become successively more excited, and if the blended waist is high and tight enough to feel like shaping wear, then it should fit well under my outfit's corset top!

Raven's quote has raised an intriguing concern, however; I imagine that when the straps on the built-in monofin break, one is -how you say- "up a creek without a paddle"! When she states that it would still be useful as a backup tail, does she mean exclusively for dry land or would some limited swimming still be possible due to the tightness of the dragonskin silicone?

Personally, I've found Raven's tails to be very secure in the ankle area. Half of the time I wear my tail, I don't even bother to put the straps over my heels. The only time I do, is if I plan on going REALLY fast for whatever reason. But for casual swimming, I don't think it'll make that much of a difference. That tail is practically a steal.

**When Raven and I were cave swimming, we actually made sure we DIDNT use straps in case we got caught so we could get out of our tails quicker in an emergency. I consider it a "safety feature" :P"

Lol just don't swim through caves! XD (It was my first time swimming through caves in a tail. I learned something new: I'm a confident swimmer in the water... I love swimming through caves, I love swimming in tails. However, mix those two up and I get a little nervous haha. I found myself thinking a little less clear then I normally do in tense situations the first time my fluke snagged. After that initial scare though, I was more confident. I didn't panic, but I certainly wasn't as calm and collected as I could have been. Instead of backing out and trying to pass through again, there was a bit of violent tail thrashing. Got me out pretty snappy though. XD)

Even though a mermaid tail actually enhances one's swimming, a large fluke is still something that can easily catch in tight spaces. You have something of a military background, do you not? I'm not surprised that you were able to keep a (relatively) clear head even during your first time in such circumstances! :mermaid kiss:

Haha, I'm not sure I'm the original sea dragon, although I do like the title. XD It was an interesting experience, and yes I have about 6 years of military experience and still counting... all of which has been served on the water :). I've been dunked in the water with all my gear on and made to remove it all before being able to surface in a training scenario, but getting a fluke stuck in a cave with a current pushing you the other way is completely different lol. Also, I wasn't aware that Ursula's original design was a lionfish... I need to google that now, i'm super curious! :P

I confess, some things I see and think 'I could do that' and make one for myself, and as an artist, I can see how others would try and do the same. I have no real problem with that. What chaps my ass is when someone blatantly takes someone else's idea to produce for resale.

yup pearlie that's the issue I have

ONe thing I'll say for Raven though is until like, this past month she would never post enough pictures. That big batch of top pictures? Some of those tops were a year or more older. she literally has bins and bins of product never seen, we talk about it a lot. Because she just isn't one for being online and finds it tedious and hard to get it all up there sometimes. Intimidating you know? You can often see most recent stuff on her instagram but she def back tracks and just because something is being posted doesnt mean that it's brand new. She's been working on that lionfish tail at least a year. I used to see the WIP when we skyped :p She has so many cool things you all havent seen yet you'll love so much when you do! ;)

Just wanted to ask-- Are the top styles listed on her Facebook page the only ones she openly offers to clients at the moment? I'm thinking about using my next tax return in a month or two to order a top from her to go with my tail from Morticia, and although I'm definitely considering a Siren top I'm still kinda torn between doing that, an Atlantis top, or maybe a custom design with fins on it, but I don't know if she'll take custom top orders or not or how much more things like fins or custom detailing would cost.

I'm fairly certain she offers the Atlantis filigree and fins upon request and I feel like she'd take a custom order if she has time. However I can't say for certain how much each costs to add I just paid for my top (which is a scale bra with the Atlantis design ad the fins) and I paid $340 for it, however I did have to pay extra because I'm a D cup. I may have also paid more for some other things I ordered (not sure if they were added to that invoice or not since it didn't specify pricing.)

I am also a small B and I have the octo top already which stays up nicely because of the halter netting. I have folded the netting in and worn it strapless above an underbust corset before and had no issues / felt very secure. The bra is super comfy yet snug enough I never feel the need to yank it up higher. I imagine the strapless scaled styles of varying sorts are even more secure as they appear to be built over wider side strapped bras and the silicone is probably a bit thinner and therefore less weight than the octo adds, so possibly even less worry about needing to constantly tug it up.

I paid approximately 374 days ago (early February 2014, but who's counting ;) ) and received sketches in early April. The sketches are sometimes in colour (especially, it seems, if the piece is a tail as opposed to an entire outfit), yet while mine were in black and white I could tell that such was due to mine being a special project not only combining tail and top but also requiring unique fin and scale sculpts. Oh yes, I am in no rush with my tail. My wedding isn't until next year and we have talked about a possible time that she could have it done by. I was just curious.

I know about good tails taking a long time and letting the artist work. I wish more people knew to do that. :D

On the matter of top pricing from before, I had a proper look at my invoice and can give you more pricing details. On my invoice I was quoted:

$150 for a fin set
$45 for Atlantis add on

My top base was quoted as $145 but
I provided my own bra (not sure if this affects pricing or not)
Was large than a D (which I believe costs more)
Had a glitter top coat (if it does cost more it wasn't individually added to the price but listed as part of the whole with the top base)
And had some extra requests added (that I'm not sure if they were added cost or not because they were also listed under the base price of the top)

I love the new blended waist, but am curious how it holds up? I know a lot of mers roll down their tails to get them on, and with that being much thinner (I'm assuming) does it make getting the tail on harder or would it rip easier than the scales?

Raina said it's actually thicker, and is made that way in purpose so it can handle the stress put on the waist. It's still early days for it so it's impossible to say for certain, I believe she also said it makes getting the tail on slightly trickier just because it is thicker. But also that Raven has said if anything happens to it, then it is easy to replace. Again I'm mostly just parroting what I've heard Raina say (write) and it's all from memory so I may be off here or there and I apologise for that.

I ordered a top with my tail as well, but I have noticed something when I made my own tops and when I swam. I am a 38D-ish in bra sizes, but when I made my own tops using bras that large I tended to find that I was a little, shall we say, buoyant in the water. In one bra, I almost float out of them! So, in ordering my Merbella bra, I went one cup smaller and am hoping that it keeps the ladies in place.

I also got the high waist and I am hoping it helps out with some problem areas. Losing over a hundred pounds tends to leave areas of sagging skin, and I'm hoping this will help take care of it like a girdle. (I know Raina says corset, but I wear corsets and they are much different than that. ;) )

I honestly love my blended waist. It's definitely tighter and more durable than my tail would have been without it. Mine isn't quite as long as Raina's but it goes over my belly button. It also makes getting a vacuum seal easier when swimming. That way you don't get waterlogged from water filling up through any gaps at the waist line. I feel like it can help with slimming that area. I'd recommended getting it. It's difficult getting into at first, but once you break your tail in it becomes easier. I can get my tail on in two minutes by myself now. Just remember to lube up your legs, feet, and butt areas. Super important. Otherwise its damn near impossible without it.

No, it can be used for swimming. My intention is to use it as a dry tail more often so my main tail isn't taking a beating. I'll also be putting mermaid Mutiny in it. You havent seen it because it's free and she has paying clients who she's trying to make sure she gets things for. And I'll get it whenever she has time to finish it :) It's a gift. It'll be ready when it's ready.



FYI this is what Catalina's tail looked like originally. It's been upgraded but she doesnt seem to post as much online so I havent seen much else beyond the dive bar photos.

Honestly I don't even know if it's my dream tail, which I suppose may add to why I feel bad sometimes. I think that is something I'm still looking for. I certainly love the design, but I don't know if it's this amazing design I love more than anything in the world and would never want anything else. But I don't really plan on stopping mermaiding any time soon so I hope I'll find it one day.

I went through that for a few months too...questioning myself over the design and if it really was my "dream tail", whether or not it was unique or too derivative of other designs etc. All that immediately dissolved away as soon as I saw an unpainted preview pic once she completed construction. She had taken a very rough idea and brought it to life in a way MORE spectacular than I hsd imagined or envisioned it. Have faith in Raven's ability to translate your vision into being in a fantastical way. I haven't yet seen a tail that she's made that isn't gorgeously unique; even simple ones. She's brilliant at taking bits of ideas and making them spectacular realitites.

here's a great shot of the waist line. believe it or not but the top of the tail comes all the way up and under my top! it sucks all the fat in like a corset haha. no editing. just a great blend.

I do find if you don't have it up all the way you can get a muffin top. When I was at merfest I couldn't get it up all the way because of an injured hand and I had a muffin top thing going on a lot. But now that I've gotten used to my tail and figured out the best way to get it on, it doesnt happen anymore. I recommend going high because it helps all around. :) I'm going to do a whole thread on the blended waist!

Catalina is actually on her tail #6 right now and her upgraded Merbella with the dorsal is AMAZING - Raven of Merbellas had worked with her to tie the colors in the tail in to her natural hair color which makes for a stunning and very organic look. She tends to stay with her white and gold palette although she's had a few wildcards too!

I've been a little on the quiet side since joining the site (oops?) but I'm actually really excited. I ordered a tail from Merbella with pretty much all of the bells and whistles. It's nice getting to read other people's excitement about their ordered and desired products. So many of you are outstandingly creative with your concepts. And of course Raven is woonnderrfuull.

OK. Got my design locked in on last night.... one of my super creative art friends helped me! (He's awesome and wanted me to let everyone know he's available for mermaid tail design projects if you need help conceptualizing your ideas)

Raven originally sent me a design option. I really like it, but was worried having stripes on the front and back would look too busy for my tastes. So I worked with my friend to tweak it. Changed the front to a slightly different concept while keeping Raven's design for the back and Fluke. He also created a side view for me which was awesome.

Included is Raven's original design and then the tweaked design I ended up going with...check it out and let me know what you think.

The colors are Navy Blue, Ocean Teal, and Treasure Gold. The Gold looks yellow on the design because its hard to find a good gold in Microsoft Paint ;)

OMG! I got my Merbella tail from Mermaid Namiko in the post today! :yay:
It's so beautiful and fit like a glove! It took 5 mins to put on with some lovely lube :D

Okay guys. I'm freaking out. It's been just a tiny bit over 200 days for me now... and I'm suddenly questioning my colours... again... I guess I'm just very afraid that my colour scheme is too boring or that maybe it will get drowned out by the blues and greens of the water when I go swimming. I'm to the point here I'm thinking of maybe just re doing the whole colour scheme. Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I think those colors are stunning, and I love your design. If you're worried that it might now show up underwater, I'd second Kelda's idea about silver highlighting. I saw a picture of a shark once that was a dark blue grey but had the most amazing light, silvery-blue edging along the edge of its fluke. It was gorgeous. I'll try to find the picture for you.

Thanks everyone for the input, I also had this little meltdown on my personal page and everyone was super helpful <3 I was really freaking out, coming close to frantically re-designing the whole tail but I think I'll stick with this one for now. I've also decided to probably add silver or maybe a metallic light blue (think blue steel colour) tipping to at least the fins, possibly the fluke. But I've also messaged Raven about it (and feel awful for taking up her precious time with my stupid in-decisiveness) and am looking forward to hear what she thinks on the matter.

I concur that Selene's tail looks cool; it has a realistic feel which is different from us outlandish dragon-types, and this realism would not be hurt by silver highlights! :mermaid kiss:
