Sidenote, are Guppy and Ophelia already sold? I've been drooling over Ophelia for the minute I saw it. My heart almost stopped when it was put up for sale. It's calling me like crazy lol! The measurements are lil off though. I'm afraid it might be too long for me..
Knees & ankles 1.5 to 2inches off (too much)

aggggghhhhhh.......I thought just for fun I'd measure myself against the ophelia tail. I'm a PERFECT fit in tail mono fin and top but I don't have the money.........and it'd look great with my vitiligo too.......sniff......... :/
Maybe if it's not sold in 20 years........fat chance of that though.

Nope no tail order :) I wasn't planning on buying a top but that one just matches my tail so perfectly I couldn't NOT buy it, especially because it's ready to ship and a great deal compared to a new one. At least that's what I told myself when I shelled out $162 ;)

Pretty sure from my own experience that the more time you give her the happier and more creative she is. It resulted in a lot of thanks and sweetness when I told her I wasn't in a rush. Everything she touches is worth the wait. :)

I don't even remember that but chances are it was back when you first joined and weren't used to forum etiquette and had been multi posting everywhere. Also there are additional photos in my posts on the other thread, and I was recently asked in this thread to show these new tails. Plus this thread tends to move so fast posts get buried quickly and people don't think to back track it for photoshoot pics. Meanwhile people go to the other one specifically for that.

edit: I literally just went through the entire other thread right from when you joined mernetwork and nowhere do I say anything to you in that thread about not being allowed to post your photos? All I say are compliments on your photos. So I didn't tell you that you couldn't also post photos from merbellas thread in that thread. I do remember when you first joined you did post constantly (just like many new members do now) and some of the topics were the same in multiple areas. So perhaps that's what you're remembering.

It is the hardest tail I have ever swam in. No kick. So much drag. Looks beautiful, but I kept thinking I was gonna die because it was hard to come up for air. And I've been at this 7 years.. lol

Starting to get concerned....last time I heard from raven was March 10th when I decided to upgrade to a blended waist. Emailed them at the end of May for a progress report (my quoted time was 200 days and I emailed them on day 150) and never heard back. Emailed them a couple days ago in order to confirm my colors/design/measurements before production started and haven't heard back yet. It feels like they only communicate with me when money is involved for them. Getting me nervous man. Someone reassure me that its all going to be ok. :(

I have the same problem with my repaired top. I emailed them two months ago and they said its finished and ill get pictures soon. Still nothing :-(

It does just take patience. They don't communicate much until they're working on your stuff directly and even then communication is pretty infrequent. That said they do read everything you send and take it into account in your design. My tail took quite a bit longer than the originally quoted 200 days too. Ended up in my hands at roughly 425 days or so (i did the two day saver shipping...expensive but i was ready for the tail to just be here). To be fair, about 45 days of that was repainting as I had a hard time accurately communicating the colors I intended which didn't become totally clear to Raven or I until she sent the final photos of the original paint. It was beautiful but needed some tweaking. Best thing to do is sit back, breathe deep, and just focus on other stuff until you start hearing from them. It isn't that they only communicate when cash is involved, it's that she puts so much focus into production she doesn't get much time to reply to email until it is pertinent to what she is crafting at that time.

Felicia is probably the closest to my wait time (330), and the knowledge that my tail still hasn't been started is kinda hitting me now. I'm pretty much ready to have it but I know the design still needs a bit of work so I'm forcing myself to be patient. If I get it by late September (beginning of Spring here) I'll be happy.

Its just a hard balance. On the one hand, I want to give the company as much time to do what they need to do creatively to create a high quality tail. After all, I wouldn't want something I've invested several thousand dollars in to come out bad because I rushed production. I want a fantastic tail (and I know I'll get that from Merbellas). I also know that its a small production workforce and that there is only so much that can be done with two people who are also performers. In no way do I think she's slacking off at all...she's probably working her fins to the bone!

On the other hand, I think about how I would feel with any other service where one timeline was given to me at the start but then that quoted time exceeded when it came to actually doing it. Especially any service as expensive as this. I haven't exceeded my quoted time yet (198/200), and I don't mind going a bit over, but I also get worried when I see people who have been waiting much longer than me and theirs isn't even finished yet (though to be fair, I don't know what was originally quoted for them and if others have additional reasons that it has taken longer like changing designs).

Its just sort of a difficult situation. I'm trying to be patient and understanding. I do feel like a lot of it comes down to the communication. Every time I hear back I feel so much better...like I'm not just talking to an empty room somewhere haha.

EDIT: ANYWAYS...the new computer must have helped because she wrote back!! I'm confirming measurements tonight and she's nearly into production. I'm guessing it probably won't be done for the Renaissance festival season I work in september/oct...but maybe soon after that I hope! I'm glad I have my backup tail still from last year. Maybe there will be a mer-miracle and it will be done by my birthday July 22nd. Wishful thinking....

So here's some video of the she creature in action. It is sooo beautiful but very hard to use. The fluke is the biggest fluke she makes (and I'd honestly wager the biggest fluke on the market from a commercial tail maker) it only has a foil inside and that's how you get that nice floppy flow. But it is the heaviest tail she makes because of the fluke and this is one of the first ones she made with this design a while back so it doesnt have drainage like the new ones do. So it basically means there is a lot of drag. And it was very floaty in the salt water. I found it had no kick at all and I had to do a lot of upper body work. I panicked a few times underwater because I couldn't kick to get up for air. But as you can see all I do is stop moving and I float up really fast lol.

This is a beautiful and stunning tail. But we basically use it for photoshoots because it's too laborious for most gigs. I wouldn't suggest it for people looking to buy a tail for kid's parties, or for someone as their first tail (unless you got a comeptitor monofin in it and the drainage upgrade, then I think you'd be fine) but if you're a seasoned mer you'll probably be ok.

Yes, Raina, go right ahead and do a mini-review for each of your tails! I am especially interested in hearing about the lightweight tail you wore to visit the little girl in the hospital. It just looks so lightweight and comfortable in pictures, which are not adjectives I would normally use to describe a realistic silicone tail, which I know are generally very heavy when dry. I actually remember contacting Raven a couple years ago about whether or not it's possible to make a realistic-looking tail that is lightweight and comfy out of the water, and I believe she told me that for the time being she wasn't sure if that was possible, but it looks like she found a way.

Hi there. I saw your drawing of Raven's lionfish tail that you're asking all the tail makers to make you, and you want it to not be so expensive. I am very good friends with Raven, I own the first tail she ever made, along with 5 others. Couple points:

1) tail makers aren't being stuck up to you. It's incredibly rude of you to ask them to copy someone else's tail. It is standard in ANY custom community that people not create knock offs. Tail makers are showing Raven respect as an artist by telling you no.

2) copying someone else is a great way to get the community to NOT like you. If you're serious about being a mermaid and having a realistic tail, it's important to start being professional right from the start. It's also important to network and learn from other mermaids. You will alienate the community by copying someone else.

3) you're not going to get something like a professional mermaid tail CHEAP. They're expensive because the materials to make them are expensive. Perhaps if you find it too expensive to go with silicone you should be starting with fabric and working your way up.

If you're serious about wanting a tail and being a mermaid I suggest you join www.mernetwork.com where there are loads of resources. Also. Ive published two books about it and have loads of free resources on my website www.makemeamermaid.com

There's a lot of resources on mernetwork to help people design their own tails, or even make one inspired by someone else. Good luck, and please don't start off in the community by copying others and publicly bad mouthing tail makers. We can all see it!

I post updates in here about Raven when I know any updates, but for anyone who may not realize it, though I try to be helpful when I *do* know things, I do NOT work for or with Raven or even live in the same country. People reallllly seem to be getting that confused lately. I will not give out her phone number (she gave it to me once for customs and I lost it anyway haha) and I have no extra methods of getting through to her than any of you. if she's not checking messages or emails, she's not seeing mine either. Yes, we're friends, but we aren't in constant communication! We're constantly busy - both of us- and if we do get to catch up it is usually in sporadic bursts for short periods of time.

I've been getting loads of messages lately from people who want to get through to her and there's nothing I can do about it. Also, it wouldnt be appropriate in any other business to try and contact someone's friends or family. So please don't message me with big long emails about your ordering process. I feel sometimes like people try to manipulate my friendship with her in order to get a result, or put pressure on her through me and I really don't like being used.

Anything I know about their status I post here. If someone's sick or travelling or out of a PC and I know about it, I post it here so everyone else knows. I'm not here to make excuses for her though either, it's her business not mine.

So please, don't message me about your merbellas orders. I can't do a darn thing for you, have no access to info, and am super busy myself! If you decide to go with Merbellas it's been known for a while now that the tails have a waiting period, and that email communication is not constant. Raven's never let anyone down yet, and never scammed anyone. So don't jump to the absolute worst conclusion and start harassing me when you don't get your email answered right away please :p I promise you this woman is not running off with your money and never giving you a tail

I think it's harder when your tail is actually in construction, rather than waiting for it to begin. Then again on day 342 I'm getting pretty anxious to have my tail finally started. I think the worst part, by far though is when it's finally completed and you're waiting for it to arrive once it's been shipped.

Ok guys I need to get something of my chest!
But first I want to say I'm not a bad person, I'm not an impatient person and I love and admire Ravens work. And I don't want to sound ungrateful.
I also know that she is busy a lot and has a lot to do.
BUT this situation is just not acceptable anymore.

Let me explain it to you:
Last September I got my tail and my top. I was soo happy but unfortunately customs ruined my top. Raven was so kind to offer to fix it for me. So at the end of September she got my top.
She said she will fix it as soon as possible, but I said its ok for me to have it in spring (april-may), so that I can use it in summer. Now its nearly august and I still don't have it back. ITS ALMOST A YEAR!
I send a reminder on 18th may asking if there are any news about my top. 5 Days later I got an answer, that my top is finished and that she will send me pictures soon.
On 23th June I send another message and on 5th July and on 23th July. NOTHING!
Its been 3 month since she said my top is finished and i still don't have it.

The big problem is, that I have a huge photoshooting in croatia in less than 2 weeks and i need my top for that. I literally begged her to send me the top, I even told her I don't need pictures. I like everything she does so i'm not worried that I won't like it or something like that.
I have no words for that. I really like Raven and her work, but I don't understand this anymore.
I'm deeply disappointed.


Also I didn't wanna bring that up here and discuss this with Raven first but since I don't get a respons from her I'll ask you for help:
A week ago I noticed that the paint on my tail is coming of in a few spots. I only swam in it twice and I thought that wasn't possible? Did I do something wrong? I was really careful and it looks like the final coat of the paint just "washed off".
(I'll add pictures as soon as I'm home on my computer.)
Like I said I have a shooting in the ocean in a few days and I'm afraid it'll come of even more.
Can I stop it from washing off?

The paint shouldn't wash off but sometimes brand new tails transfer paint if it hasn't dried all the way yet when a tailmaker mails it ( which can happen when trying to rush a tail out to someone who is waiting) I know Tyler usually does emails and I think he's traveling right now. So if I were you I'd message the fb page and send an email! That way hopefully raven sees it

I'd strongly suggest that in future if Raven offers anyone to do something right away just take that offer. Don't wait til later cuz it is too easy IMO for things to get backed up later.

If you post pics of your tail I might be able to help. But good to send pics to raven too. I think outside of normal occasional paint transfer she's never had an issue like that before reported. So good to give pics and context so she knows how to address it and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sorry that happened and you're waiting so long. I hope you get ahold of her soon and figure out your paint. Keep us posted ( a lot of times people post the complaint but don't follow up when a tail maker fixes things. Good for everyone to know)

PS a lot of times Raven mails without telling people. I wonder if she did mail but it is taking forever in customs? That happened with two of my tops last year. Hopefully it gets sorted.

it's a little hard to tell with the photos being so close up and blurry. Is there any way you can zoom it out and add a couple more so i can see it on context of the tail? So far it looks to me more like stuff that has been scraped off, because it seems to be only around ridges and the edges of scales as opposed to flatter surfaces that are likelier to peel if not dried. (close up pics work best when you press the flower button or the macro button on your camera!)

Sometimes even if you're very careful, the texture of a pool can be very abrasive on tails. I'll give you an example. My new tail that I've had since January has had no paint come off anywhere. Until I had to swim in a notoriously bad pool that has a stecko texture. I rested my tail on it once and didn't even scrape it around, but it managed to buff quite a lot of paint off the knees. I spent the rest of the gig making sure anytime I put my tail down it was on a yoga matt. Literally. Underwater and everything haha.

The damage from what i can see looks very similar to mine. I'm going to go take some photos and upload them and show you so you can compare. It certainly looks to me like scraping, not a matter of the paint washing off.

I'd say just because it happened that time wont mean it'll happen again either. It depends on where you swim. Sand here in the city where I live did nothing to bother my tail. But more abrasive sand in another province I visited scraped a few areas. Some pools I have no trouble with at all. Some pools scrape.

THE GOOD NEWS IS they are easy fixes which Raven can walk you through. A little pigment you can buy online for 20$ and a little silicone (Raven can tell you specifically what and you can get smaller sizes for repairs) and you're good to go! I'm literally waiting on mine to come in the mail right now so I can touch mine up.

I've used it constantly since January, multiple times a week. But this is the first real time it sustained any damage. The pool didnt even feel that bad to me but it's all in how it grips the silicone.

It can be the pool, a pool deck, the rocks or sand beneath it.

In all our pretty photos we showed you of us sitting on that rock in PEI we had a towel beneath the mermaids that I edited out of photos lol.

I don't have pics of my knees because I fixed them but they pretty much looked exactly like yours.


There's no real way around it. Even when you think you're being careful some types of surfaces JUST SUCK. I find walking on my hands in the water instead of letting anything rest on the bottom helps a lot. Wear and tear like this is normal it just sucks it happened to you after the second use!

I'm on day 115 and I'm so anxious to get my first silicone tail. I could imagine the other mers being just as anxious to get any bit of information from their design :) at least in the end you know Merbella never disappoints so that's peace of mind.

Msds = materials safety data sheet and discusses the safety parameters of the materials used to craft an item or just the material itself. Most chemicals / plastics / paints have one on file somewhere usually w manufacturers

Because I have raven's personal account I see some behind the scenes so I know she's still working away! But (she hasnt told me this, it's me speaking from experience) I'd expect a few slight delays given the weeks of rain now. Makes tail curing and paint drying incredibly crappy and long taking!

^^I was able to sort of sift through messages on this board and get a general idea of that when I was waiting on mine just via the posts of those who are waiting. It's only a rough idea as not everyone who orders posts here and not everyone orders a tail, some are awaiting tops only etc. Additionally, I learned through those observations that she doesn't always necessarily work linearly. She works on many projects at a time and fills the gaps in her time working on one with parts of another. If someone's tail is far simpler in design, or someone paid a rush fee there may be tails completed before yours that were actually ordered after yours. There's no real way to have a crystal clear view but it will give you some idea. That said I cannot think of anyone lately that has received their tail in less than a year so it will probably be at least that long from when you ordered.

I guess I reached some kind of patience limit this week, I had been hoping my tail would have been started in August by the latest since I figured a year to get all the details sorted out would be enough time, and I highly doubt that's going to happen now. Of course I'm not angry or anything :) I sent her a message asking about the thing that's holding up my tail (I'm waiting on something to be finished so I can make one last design decision and I had been told that was supposed to be finished by the end of July) and haven't gotten a response yet. So to tide me over while I wait I bought a fabric tail haha. Apparently there's a lady who lives half an hour away from me who sells them, who knew?

Sorry, usually I check this thread pretty religiously even if I'm just lurking. And I have it so I get emails sent about pms, yet somehow there was no email showing you sent me a message. I have a competitor in my tail and I highly recommend it for ocean swimming. I swim at some pretty rough spots. There's a beach in Hawaii called Sandy's that is notorious for i's big waves that break close to shore and strong currents and I swim that with ease with my tail. It was pretty funny actually, last time I went the waves were bigger and rougher than usual. The lifeguards were pretty certain I was going to drown since I have to mermaid crawl in and kept getting knocked back by waves since my dog was in the way barking at me as I try to quickly butt slide as fast as I can. But once I got past the break I was fine. So, yeah I'd recommend a competitor unless you're mostly going to use it in the pool or in calmer waters and really like the flowly look. The foil in Raven's tails give it an awesome flowly look but that also means you have to work harder to move.
