Alright here's a question to everyone, has anyone ever put a rush order on their tail? If so how long did it take to come in? Was it a performance or basic tail?

Never have, because when I had the money I thought it was close enough to the upper limit of her production time not to worry about it. Maybe I should've rushed it, in retrospect...

(Still not shipped...gyah.) Which do you think is worse: waiting for pictures, or having pictures and waiting for it to arrive?

I recently got contacted by my Renfair guild asking if I'd be able to do an event in the middle/end of may. I have them on hold still trying to figure out if I get my tail in time or not since I had to cancel my previous event... *Bites nails*

Yeah, she's crazy busy right now. :\ Everyone's orders are being a little bit overdue, but I'm sure she'll be back on track pretty soon enough.

I got my pictures at about 139 days. Now I'm waiting for shipping (which she said was going to occur Friday...*sigh*). You'll get your pictures eventually, and they'll be gorgeous. I know it's hard to wait, but hang in there. She's got a lot going on with all of her events and orders.

Remember how I always get that insider information...? XD lol I know Raven is working her tail off literally! She's soooo close! And I am so stoaked for all of you because sometimes I get to see stuff before it gets sent/posted for a second opinion or something (she's a crazy perfectionist!) so she can make sure it's perfect and make clients super happy. I checked in with her on Monday to see how she was fairing with all the work and she's great now that the ren stuff is done with :) Just remember if you got lighter colours on your tails they end up taking loads of layers to be sure!

I'm afraid I haven't helped, I've been a terrible nag. :-S I feel bad when I email her, but I'm just so darned anxious that I have my tail before the annual Ren Faire...

Thanks for being anxious with me, lol. My mertender is, too. So are my coworkers (non-mer). Funny story: One of my coworkers is expecting...VERY. Like, any-day-now expecting. But she's still working because she wants to get her kids through end-of-year testing. So, she comes in from a doctor's appointment, and tells us she might have pre-eclampsia (sp? mommy high blood pressure, pretty scary stuff) and is really due. I said, "Aren't you worried?" And she goes, "Enough about that! I'm fine, have you heard anything about your TAIL?" I looked at her, and she says, "Yeah, I'm almost more worried about that!" I had to laugh. Everyone around me knows how excited I am for this tail. :$ I'm afraid I've bubbled over with enthusiasm a few times. ;-)

I'm preparing to send my tail in May to be taken in- which means I'll also get a handy dandy dorsal fringe! Eeee :) So rest assured, I'll be just like all of you XD

Okay, so my tail shipped! I'm so happy because it will be here soon, but sad because it will arrive SMACK in the middle of end-of-year tests so I won't have time to swim in it for a day or two! :-S

(For anyone wondering, it was 11 days from pictures to shipping, but mine had extra fins that needed to be added after the color was approved.)

Edit: but I had asked about shipping when I first ordered. She couldn't tell me how much it would cost until she got to the post office, but she said a tail that she had shipped to Canada (presumably Raina's) cost $80 dollars.

Argghhhh :\ I won't lie, I was frustrated when I saw that starfish one today. That's what I was planning on doing this summer when I try to make silicone tops.... Basically the same design too :\ I guess back to the drawing board.

I don't think anyone will think you're copying her--like you've said, the idea of them has been around a while, it's just that there have been some things in the way of making them (such as how real starfish will destroy in water). I really think you should try a starfish top--I'd really love to see more of them!

Trust me Blondie- Raven ends up beating a lot of people to the punch hahaha XD I dont know how many people I've known who had a particular tail colour pattern in mind and hadn't said anything, only to see Raven whip it up! I think she's just always experimenting and trying new things.

So, what are the noticable differences between the 1,000 tail and the 3,000? I'm still not sure. I'd probably, if lucky, only be able to save up for the 1,000 and I was curious as to what I'd be missing out on.

Basically the only noticeable difference is the fluke.
Aside from the neoprene and lack of extra fins, the basic tail is also lighter and you cannot get the Merbella scales on them. :)

My first thoughts: The thing is GORGEOUS! It's so heavy, though, and I'm weak. ;-P Also, either I'm putting it on wrong or I ordered it short, or my butt and thighs are too big now to fit well (I've gained weight since ordering). It's coming up nice and highish on the front, but barely covering the butt in back. And yes, I was trying it on dry. :-S *nervous*

Try it on wet. I felt the same way when I got my fish butt. I was like "Really... I know I haven't grown." I gained some weight but I couldn't believe that was the problem. So I tried it on in the water with conditioner and it slid up much more. It sometimes just needs that lubrication to really set into place. Worst comes to worst. Raven will add more to it. And the quick fix for now can be a belt.

Try it on wet. Maybe the materials will stretch out. I've noticed that when I am out of the water my swimsuit is very tight on me, but when I'm in the water, it fits perfectly. I hope the same works for you.

Yeah, when I first got mine, I wasn't sure it fit either because it was so freaking hard to get on. I was literally almost in tears because I couldn't do it. And well, once I got the hang of it, and once I actually put it on wet which is a gajillion times easier.... well you've seen my tail it comes up to my boobs LOL. And, if it's the unthinkable, and it really doesn't come up high enough once you have it all on... Raven can fix that :) I believe both my silicone tails have a little bit of extra added on at the top, you can't see a seam on either of them, or tell unless they're inside out!

it's easier to get it on IN the water, but so long as you + the tail are very wet it's still easy too. Much easier than the lube up your legs with cream and try to slide in way, and it's pretty much impossible to put it on without water or cream.

I find that its a lot easier to put my merbellas tail on out of water, with lotion, and then make fine adjustments to the fit while in the water. the lotion lets me slide my feet into the foot pockets really far so the heel straps come over my feet by themselves instead of me having to dig around for them for 20 minutes. I've actually gotten charlie horses from doing that.

Any idea if that's the same with the basic tail since it is lined with neoprene...i was wondering if you would still need to lotion up if putting it on dry?

As a rule of thumb in my experience with neoprene, dry is actually better. I've even put talc on to slide into neoprene lined tails easier, or worn tights underneath

And Thalassa, it wont ALWAYS be that hard I promise. It's so freaking hard to get the tail past your butt because it sticks to the fabric on your bottoms. For dry gigs I usually wear a thong, and loads of cream on my legs and butt to help it slide on, especially the feet so I can get them into the monofin pockets the easiest.

That seems to be a theme. I know a few people who ordered full silicone, one of them a Merbella Studios one, and cried when they got it because it was so heavy and so hard to put on. I'm glad I've handled one of the Merbella Studios full silicone tails before I got mine because it's hard to understand just how heavy it is until you feel it for yourself. :/ Sometimes you don't know what you're really getting into with a silicone tail until you get it.
Honestly I'm nervous about my tail fit because I've seen 3 mermaids who have gotten tails from them and they didn't fit right :( I was really careful with measuring (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?4157-Tips-on-Measuring-for-a-Tail) so I hope that pays off.

I'm actually really bad about cleaning my tail. When I'm done swimming, I usually just hang it to dry. I have a lot of room at the pool I use so ill grab it by the top of the fluke near the footlockers and spin in circles to kind of force the water out. Then when I get home I lay it flat on the ground in my basement near a dehydrator. There are mold spots on the inside of my tail, I've tried scrubbing them with a toothbrush, but they don't really bug me because its just barely there. I don't have money for cleaner either. So I'm not the best about cleaning my tail, but I don't think one or two mold spots will destroy my tail immediately.

AYLA! Mold inside tail isnt jsut issue for tail but a health issue for you. Get an sesitive antibacterial hand soap and clean your tail. Also Contact raven on what can be safly used to clean that!!!

Just remember- chlorine eats away at everything, even silicone. I know someone with a tail like yours who hasn't been rinsing it and drying it properly after, and they are getting weak spots at the waist and even parts where the silicone is coming apart on the fluke. I've known others with full silicone tails who didn't rinse it and got damages like tearing :( We think silicone is indestructible, but it really is not. If you can't buy a $5-$10 bottle of silicone safe cleaner at least be sure to rinse your tail really well with fresh water as soon as possible after you're out of the water. If you're at a public pool you can even use the showers to do that. The mold is a problem- it spreads and eats away at the silicone making it prone to rips and tears. If you can't afford the cleaner, try and spot clean it with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar (if it were me i'd leave it on there for a few hours, wipe it off with a damp cloth, then wipe with a dry one and do that every few days till it's gone- but that's just a guess). It's a few minutes of care (and for the cleaner a few extra dollars) for a $3,000+ piece of equipment. For me that took over 3 years and awesome amounts of birthday money from my family for a new tail.. not worth cutting corners on care to me :/ I've seen the kinds of damages and degrading to every kind of tail when it's not taken care of, and I can't stress how much it's just not worth it. Just my 2¢

Yeah, I actually taped my difficulty getting into my tail the first time. I promised myself I would and that I'd put it on Youtube so that newer mers can see that difficulty getting into the tail is normal. I haven't been able to try it on wet yet, with testing at work and getting ready for faire I haven't had time! I'll definitely have some pics soon, though. ;-)

PS Is there any particular brand of cleaner, or will any silicone-safe cleaner do?

There are mold spots on the inside of my tail, I've tried scrubbing them with a toothbrush, but they don't really bug me because its just barely there. I don't have money for cleaner either. So I'm not the best about cleaning my tail, but I don't think one or two mold spots will destroy my tail immediately.

Yeah I got mold in mine, you can't get it out but you can KILL it. I use sex toy cleaner or vinegar on a cotton swab. I am usually very good about maintaining my tail, but I forgot to rinse it twice, and it caused some issues. So always rinse it with clean fresh water, and then follow up with a cleaner. Then you really should pat it dry inside with a towel, and stuff one towel in the fluke to absorb the water out of the foot pockets etc.

I've been rinsing it with fresh water after every swim. I think its just the fresh water that sits in the tail that i can't get at or i miss that starts growing the mold spots. I'm pretty sure investing in a tail stand to hang my tail from properly would pretty much alleviate the mold spot issue. Right now like I said I can only lay it flat on the ground, I have nowhere to hang it to properly let it dry without stretching it out.

Sex toy cleaner that's approved for silicone. Most of them are multi use. You just have to read the bottle/label, or description if you're ordering online to make sure silicone is listed. You can pop by a local sex shop, or you can buy online. I do have my safe search off- not sure if that matters. I would go for the straight spray stuff, not the foaming stuff. Something you can leave on or wipe off and don't have to rinse it off. There are multiple pages worth before you get above $15.


You know.. I wonder if we need to rethink lubes for getting into tails. The care sheet for Merbella Studios says to use a small amount of baby oil to get it on dry. From my research, baby oil is just mineral oil with fragrance added. From what I've read mineral oil damages silicone over time. From my research petroleum products are fine (just not fine on neoprene, latex, or a silicone mix that's not pure silicone). So if you use a cream or a lotion look at the ingredients- petroleum is okay, mineral/baby oils are not. I've seen Mertailor say to use hair conditioner, but those usually have a lot of silicons in them - there are different types that go by many different names that make them hard to spot on an ingredient list- and silicons can damage silicone. Like if you put a silicone based lube on silicone it can straight up melt, permanently. It's hard digging around for comprehensive info on this stuff, but from my hours of research that's what I've found. (I am getting a tail of silicone, I want to make sure what I do and use on it is as safe for the material as humanly possible.)

Also, I was looking for a half gallon of cheap stuff water based lube (you know, for people who do a lot of dry gigs) and uh... yeah. http://www.amazon.com/Passion-Natural-Water-Based-Lubricant-Gallon/dp/B005MR3IVO 55 gallons. Look at the reviews! Can't stop laughing. So. many. trolls. XD
I did manage to answer my own question about using lube instead of lotions in my search.. guess it's too expensive to use in that quantity all the time. I will just say.. it is amazing and disturbing the stuff you find when trying to find out more info on durability and care of silicone. Cause well, you mostly have to find that information based on sexy toy info XP Oh, the forums I've found myself on looking everywhere for answers O_o But with safe search on you don't really find any answers!

I dont think you have to worry about the majority of things we use to get the tail on if you're going right in the water because it rinses it right out/off right away. I use all natural body lotion. Silicone isn't very porous so it's a lot better than latex or plastic etc in terms of preventing bad stuff. Just don't use a silicone based cleaner or silicone based lube on your tail, silicone will bond to silicone even at that level. They told me that at the sex store. LOL

Ok I am moving myself over to this thread after asking about ordering/email info with Merbellas. I have just read through ALL the pages on this thread, and looking at these gorgeous tails that you mers have has been great! It's also been good to read all the experiences with ordering and waiting.

I am SOOOO excited to order a tail, and I have colors (mostly) picked out, fluke design, monofin, measurements...now just checking FB like a crazy person for when she announces she's taking orders again. Then...well, I'm glad it's online because I bet it would be like crazy Black Friday in the real world. Even getting ready to write a draft email so I can send it out ASAP when she posts :)

That's what I did! I wrote the email and kept it in my drafts, then stalked their FB fan page for when they said they were taking more orders and sent it out as soon as they posted :P

I know the wave or rapid comes price included with the tail, and the rapid is $80 last I checked and the competitor was $320. So I'd say around an extra $280 would be a decent guestimate. Maybe a bit more since it probably takes more materials (neoprene, silicone, paint, ect) to cover that big of a fin.

Depends COMPLETELY on the top. I'd say anywhere from $90-$500 depending on a lot. Scale tops are a lot less I think than seaweed/octo/other tops, and shell tops are middle ground? Those all are just guesses.

Oh, REALLY?! I wish you'd come up and introduced yourself. Gosh, I'm tired.

Okay, we have the good, bad and ugly. Not really. BUT I don't have time at the moment to write a full review, so I'll let y'all know what's going on.

The good: The tail is GORGEOUS! The fluke is so nice (HEAVY, but such a nice solid fluke...now I just need to hone my ankles), and it's just all so pretty! What looks like gold in the pictures is actually a beautiful copper color.

The bad: Somehow between my measurements or fluctuating weight or something, my tail ended up not quite fitting over my derrière (butt). It still fits MOSTLY, but it's not as high as I like most of my tails to come. It'd be fine if I liked my tails low like some mers. So I have a couple of options I'm exploring which include losing weight, wearing spanks (sp?), wearing a big belt to hide the gap, eventually sending it back to Raven to add a bit on the waist, etc.

The ugly: As others have mentioned, these tails are HARD to get into. I still haven't tried it on wet, because between work and Ren Faire obligations (and a pool that took 3 almighty DAYS to fill) I haven't had time. That's also the reason I have no pictures (although I know some people took some when the mermaids were riding around in pirate ships, so I'll have to see if I can get hold of some. The solid fluke is also really heavy, and unless you have ankles of steel don't expect to be able to flop it right away. If you want to flap it, roll over on your stomach and do it...be careful that you don't hit nearby people in the head (Sorry, Koral!). I'm also a bit worried about being able to upkeep the tail, because I'm a worrier and rather clumsy (LOL), but that's a worry for another day.

So. Gorgeous tail, a couple of problems that I look forward to fixing, review to come as soon as I can try it on wet. <3

Remember that her inbox gets flooded daily. Send her another email and post on the Merbella Studios wall that you sent her an email, so she'll know to look for it if it gets buried.
Honestly I'm not sure if taking in a basic tail (and still keeping the seamless look) is a possibility :/ Really in my opinion and experience (going through weight fluctuations with a neoprene and [real] latex tail) 2kg or almost 4 1/2 lbs isn't enough to worry about. Retake your top 2 measurements and see what the inch difference is from the ones you sent her and include that in your email to her about it. Then she can decide if that's enough to worry over.

I got an email from Raven, she said she's working hard on my tail and promised to get me pictures this week :D On day 130 and super exited!
I have to admit I'm getting really nervous about the fit of my tail. I've seen several people have fitting issues in terms of length. I told myself it would be fine.. then I realized the measuring chart she had when I sent in my measurements asked for the top measurement to be at the belly button. Now the current chart says at the waist. Vertically, there's a solid 3 inch difference between those two for me :( I emailed her about it. *bites nails*

Talked to Raven today! She sent me pics and we discussed some color tweaks :D Basically one of the colors I wanted for my tail refused to work (wouldn't show up at all on top of the other colors, no matter how she tried) so we discussed it and she's going to try a different alternative. I was a little sad cause it was that gorgeous turquoise color I fell in love with on some other tails she'd done, but if it won't work it won't work. She gave me a great alternative that I'm really excited to see how it turns out :)

I absolutely love that she talks to her customers and works out any changes they want- and she's so professional about it! I know personally if I had spent hours and hours working my butt off on something then someone asked me to change it I'd be hurting or frustrated. But she's very receptive to feedback, which to me makes a huge difference. She knows that this is people's hard earned money on the line and she wants it to be perfect for them. Where others would get hurt at feedback she takes it and works with it, which is just awesome. :thumbs up:

So I just wanted to share that with you all, and to let you know she's really awesome at taking feedback. She told me she knows it's a lot of back and forth sometimes, but to her it's better to have all that than just saying that it's done and shipped and have a customer get a less than perfect tail. So if you order from her and get pics, don't be afraid ask about changes. :)

I understand really wanting a product from Raven I mean who wouldn't but I wish there was something to be done about users who dont look to she if she is takig offers or not. I guess I'm just protective because Raven deserves to be treated with respect not be demanded to do things or be spammed especially when she is sick :(

She stayed up all night taking in my tail and going crazy on it :D I told her to get some photos in it, because when she first made it she did so I think it would be a cool juxtaposition. I did pay her a bunch to rush fix it and rush ship it, but I certainly didn't expect her to stay up all night lol. I think she just got going and then was like BAM.

Also my BF and I did the math, I have worn this tail almost 100 times! She couldn't believe how well it was holding up!

Also the merbellas scales are the same colors as mine the only throw off is the fluke doesn't have gold on it. But maybe she hasn't gotten to it yet? haha I just keep spinning myself in circles ^_^;

Got my tail today!! I can't for the life of me get it on though :P I can't get my left foot in the foot strap! I tried to tie string to it but that didn't work.

Lube up your other leg with baby oil. Just be sure to wash it out when you're done. Monofins are hard to get on inside a tail, the first couple tries are terrible, but you'll get used to it and be getting it up super fast in no time flat.

Also, Raven's air compressor she uses to paint the tails died on her today from too much use! So she has to replace it. :/
