There isn't really a Merbella's Studios thread so I thought I'd start one. Literally just copying stuff from their FB so people on the network know where to find it.

Ordering Info: (taken from the "about" section on FB)

REALISTIC TAIL SILICONE TAIL:

Price: &1,000.00 USD (shipping not included)
-Tail is custom made to your provided measurements. Includes a built in Finis Wave monofin into the tail for swimming. Raised rounded scales and fluke texture. I am also able to customize the shape of the fluke with this design. It is neoprene lined and slightly buoyant in the water. Includes your custom color design. I do not charge extra for colors.
-Basic design does not include any "extra fins". Additional pectoral/ankle/dorsal fins can be added to your tail for an additional charge.
*This design is MUCH lighter than our performance tails and recommended for mermaids that do a lot of "dry" events as it is easier to maneuver in on land.

PERFORMANCE SILICONE TAIL

This is our most "Realistic" tail. Made entirely of a platinum cure silicone and is extremely durable and neutrally buoyant in the water.

Price: $3,000.00 USD (shipping not included)
-Tail is custom made to your provided measurements. It does include a competitor monofin built into the tail for excellent speed and ease in the water. We also another monofin option for a very "Flowy" look in the water. Basic tail includes your custom color design. I do not charge extra for colors.
-Basic design does not include any "extra fins". Additional pectoral/ankle/dorsal fins can be added to your tail for an additional charge.
The Silicone is very stretchy and durable. Tails generally weigh between 20-30lbs on land but are weightless in the water.

*All tails are painted with a custom paint I mix. Generally all very vibrant pearlescent/metallic colors for a very realistic shimmery look.
*All tails can be used in fresh, salt or chlorinated water.

All orders are placed by e-mail. All serious inquiries can email me at info@merbellas.com for payment information, measurements and to discuss tail design.
I am only able to accept payment in full minus shipping cost. I ask for the shipping cost once you have received pictures of your completed tail.

I am willing to do custom sculptures (custom fluke or fins) for your tail for an additional charge.

Place ORDERS ONLY by emailing merbellastudios@gmail.com when Raven posts they are taking orders

I'm so excited to get my tail from her! I hope it comes before Christmas so I can wrap it up and put it under my tree. :D
I'm saving up for one of her tops, I'm not sure which one though. I really like the octopus top, and the scale corset, even though I don't think she really makes them to sell. All of her stuff is just so beautiful <3

I can't wait till I can afford a Raven tail... I'd love to have one of her tops, but its almost impossible to get one in my size :( I'm a 38DD. And I can't find anyone who makes full shell tops for that size, not just a bra covered in a bunch of tiny shells

Her work is so amazing! And same here, I so can't wait to be able to afford one of her silicone tails and a shell top :). My favorite tails of her's is the rainbow tail and the blue and white one.

She made one for Mermaid Cydney who is also very busty! I'm not sure her size (you'd have to ask her) but there's a few threads floating around for bustier mers. Raven loves a challenge ;)

Well, I've messaged her several times about wanting a top, would pay for it, and I have never heard anything back from her... At all... Been trying the last 3 months, on Etsy, their email AND Facebook... Never hear anything back

AniaR

they get overwhelmed with messages and only use the official email right now. As far as tops, I'm guess she's just not taking any custom orders at the moment, just selling whatever is up on her etsy. Just keep an eye out. She's super busy right now getting orders out but she'll be taking a break. Whenever she's willing to take on new projects she makes a post. I also sent her this link so I'm sure she'll see your comment and know you're interested :) I think she just gets so many theoretical emails that there's no time to actually reply to them all.

I've been trying to get a hold of her for the last few months though... And I've tried every possible way to get a hold of her, even the official email. I've even said in everything I've sent her that I WANT to buy a custom top, but still nothing... hopefully its not the same when I go to order a tail from her eventually

I purchased my tail in July and was both relieved and surprised to find out I wasn't the only one who had ordered a tail around that time. For all the people who have apparently ordered ones, we certainly don't hear a lot about it. I wonder why.

AniaR
11-30-2012, 11:27 AM
For all the people who have apparently ordered ones, we certainly don't hear a lot about it. I wonder why.

She posted about the circumstances frequently on her FB page, right after her surge of summer orders, the silicone distributors went on back order and they didn't even notify the people who had placed orders. So they waited a while for the silicone and then when they finally called found out they were back ordered and had NO IDEA when they'd be able to send them new stuff. Then, her partner got a new job which left her to do the entire job by herself, and she wasn't even home in her studio to do it- she was staying with an extended family member. So when she was able to make the tails finally when things came through she literally pulled all nighters doing them in order from when they were ordered as silicone came in. When all this happened, they had stopped taking orders, and all the silicone didn't come at once. Then she got sick @_@. I couldn't exactly fly over and help so I tried to give some suggestions for managing the emails. You gotta realize, she'd have the email that were just questions, the emails of people who wanted to buy and hadn't read that she wasn't taking orders, the emails that were just fans, people who wanted to book her or book her mermaids, then every person who ordered a tail wanted multiple updates. She could sit there for a day and filter emails and reply, or spend the day making the tails, so she decided to make the tails. I taught her how to change some email settings to help her filter some things, and we realized she wasn't even GETTING some of the emails (which was also posted about on FB) and how to set up automated responses that gave answers to frequently asked questions. She also decided to save time she'd only be sending 1 process pic during the tail making, of when the tail was starting to be painted. Before that, they all look the same generally. And painting is the important step to make sure you're conveying what the person wants.

She did post these things multiple times on her FB, and let people know that despite the delays she was still striving to put things in the mail as soon as possible. She sent lots of stuff out without even getting to take a photo of it :p She also said on FB she'll be compensating people who had to wait a super long time with extra gifts.

There's a LOT of pressure as I'm sure Jesse, Stevi, and other tail makers will tell you, not to repeat mistakes others have made, and to live up to very high expectations. Originally Raven was only doing one order at a time but the demand became too big so she decided to take on more and stuff like this happens. At the very least she did her best to keep people updated as a whole (I realize people want individual emails, but working 100% by herself that just wasn't possible) and compensate. I think she learned a heck of a lot through this whole thing, and how she'll do some things differently, but honestly there's not a whole lot you can do when the people supplying your silicone don't come through :p

I'm just thankful people are being so kind, patient, and good about it. Having Raven as a friend I see stuff the public doesn't get to see and I KNOW how hard she works to make sure she lives up to everyone's expectations. She takes it very seriously and wants every mer to have their perfect dream tail and she puts a lot of pressure on herself to make sure it's absolutely perfect the first time. I had to wait a long time for my tail, it was delayed for a lot of reasons I didn't know at first and once I found out, I was frustrated but I could totally see how there wasn't anything anyone can do. I can promise you, all that melts away the instant that giant-ass box shows up at your house and you pull that beast out of the packing peanuts !!! You're going to have the best freaking tail of your life and it'll last your life. Mine was the first silicone she made, and she's learned so much since then, and mine was made thinner than any other silicone tail on the market and I'm telling you, the thing has taken a beating and doesn't show it!!!

And just to drive you even more crazy...

My tail is based off of a steelhead trout (aka rainbow trout):

7885

I love the speckles and colors, and hopefully this will be pretty unique. I'm getting two sets of little fins wherever Raven wants to put them. Other than that, I gave her carte blanche to do what she wants. I'm also lucky enough to have gotten in on her Cyber Monday sale, so I'm getting a top and headdress to match my tail. I'm super excited to see what she does with them!

:yay:

EDIT: I know this goes without saying, but please don't steal my idea. :$

Thanks for telling me, Raina! I actually came up with the rainbow trout because I liked the speckles on Raven's tails and I just googled for something similar in green. XP I thought rainbow trout was perfect, because that was the first fish I ever saw outside a fish tank! ;-) I'm excited to see what other mers tails look like!

For those who've had a tail made, does Raven send you measurement instructions only when she's ready to work on your tail, or does she send it fairly soon after you've paid? I just want to make sure I'm not missing an email. ;-)

I believe she sent me an email asking fort measurements after I sent her the first payment. Then she started on my tail after I sent her the final payment. I don't think she sent instructions on measuring, but I already knew where to measure and I think she has some measuring info on one of her sites.

Raven just posted a FAQ I thought I'd copy and paste it here!!! You can also view it on their FB here https://www.facebook.com/notes/mermaid-ravens-etsy/faq/455537217835697

Hoping this might help answer some of the questions we get all the time:)

1. How much are your tails?
We basically have two types of tails right now. The basic tail for $1,000.00 and the performance tail for $3,000.00.

2. How much are extra fins?
Fins are only available for our performance tail and they are $75.00 a set. They are very customizable and can be placed pretty much anywhere on your tail.
Dorsal fins are $250.00. Again very customizable just send us your ideas and we will do our best to bring it to life.

3. What are the differences between the two types of tails?
here are some of the main differences :)
-The basic design is neoprene lined and the performance tail is pure silicone.
-We do not offer any extra fins for the basic design.
-The basic design comes with s finis wave for the monofin the performance tail comes with the finis competitor (or te finis foil for a flowy fluke)
-The basic design features a simple fluke texture. The performance tails have much more elaborate and detailed flukes to choose from.
-The basic design generally weighs between 10-15 lbs. the performance tails average 20-25lbs.
-BOTH are swimmable, and intended for water use.
-BOTH include full custom coloring.
-BOTH are made from a platinum cure silicone called DragonSkin.

4.Do you sell latex tail?
No, we no longer work with latex rubber materials.

5. Can I get a Basic tail with a competitor monofin?
YES! We can install any monofin into the basic tail for an additional cost.

6. Do you need any mermaid models?
Currently we like to use our clients to advertise our products. We do occasionally need extra models for photo/video projects so if you are local and would like to send us your portfolio you can email us at merbellastudios@gmail.com also you can keep an eye on our page for any casting calls in the future.

7. Is it extra for colors?
NOPE! We do not charge any extra for color or design. Our goal is to create your dream tail. We do not charge extra but the more elaborate your design is the more time might be added to production time.

8. Whats the production time?
Currently 90-120days. We do work very hard to get orders completed as quickly as possible, but this is Art and we are more concerned with making sure you receive the BEST possible product even if it takes a little longer.

9. Is there a rush option?
yes, for an additional $450 we can rush your order if you need to be bumped to the front of the line. Please contact us before hand so we can determine if we can meet your deadline.

10. Why are your tails so expensive?
Well for states the materials themselves are EXTREMELY expensive. Also its not an easy process, very difficult. Simply our tails are priced at what we believe they are worth. We do our best to keep costs as low as we can but there are also several other less expensive options (as well as more expensive) on the market today if these are out of your budget.

11. Can you teach me how to make tails/will you tell me how you make your tails?
No. Sorry, but thats not what this business is for. Theres lots of info out there on the world wide web that can help you if your looking to make your own tail:)

12. How much is shipping?
Each tail is different so the price does vary depending on the tail and where the tail is going. We now ship COD (collect on delivery ) with FedEx. Basically means you pay FedEx directly to receive your tail when they deliver it.

13. do you ship out of the country?
Yes, we ship all over!

14. I've emailed you several times with no response, whats the deal?
We apologize for this, and are continuously working on the problem. We get FLOODED with emails on the daily. Mostly from a younger crowd, We can't tell you how many times we have taken the time to email back and forth with a "Potential client" only to discover they were only 11. We Get several emails constantly asking questions that are already answered on this page. SO please title your email "READY TO ORDER" and try to include as much information about your order in your email. Heres an example of a perfect email..

"Hello, my name is BLANK. I am interested in placing an order for a BASIC/PERFORMANCE tail.
I have funds available and I'm ready to pay. I also have a design drawn out for you to use as reference for colors, etc.
Please email me and let me know if you are available for taking orders.
Thank you for your consideration."

If you do have any questions that are not already answered here you can email us and we will try to get back to you as soon as we can.
But if you send us an email that just says "How much are your tails?" you probably wont get a response. (we get hundreds of these)
We will also try to keep updating this FAQ :)

Hopefully this will help answer some questions you might have, and a big THANK YOU to our fans who help us out constantly by answering questions on our wall or directing people to the answers for us. You guys are the best

I've even said in everything I've sent her that I WANT to buy a custom top, but still nothing... hopefully its not the same when I go to order a tail from her eventually
I'm the same size and I've contacted Raven about getting an Abalone style top from her. The hard part is just finding the larger shells and then she can do the top no problem. I'm sure if you contacted her she could whip something up for you! I know she's keeping an eye out for shells for me, She can probably do the same for you!

Basic Tail:

It's silicone on neoprene and doesn't come with extra fins.

This is one too, though she is no longer offering extra fins with the basic model

Thank you Steph! (you are ALWAYS so wonderful)

We are working on some comparison photos/videos to post to help show the difference right now. The Basic tail does have molded scales NOT imprinted scales. I didn't think they looked so similar but a lot of people are having a hard time telling the difference. We have also tweaked a few things to help them look a bit more unique.

Hope that helps!

My tail is the performance model. Straight silicone, no neoprene, and a competitor monofin. Its been trimmed down to allow the silicone to pull it and bend it a little easier so its not too unnatural looking.

No photoshopping aside from the colour filter to try and avoid the over the top green from pool water/lights. That tail STILL looks every bit as great as it does when I pulled it out of the box, and we did the math... I have done over 100 mer gigs/events/photoshoots since I got it! It's been in all types of water, it's been dragged across sand, rocks, and concrete. It's been flown around, stepped on, dropped, kids walk on it constantly. I mean, I try to limit this stuff but the fact is I use this thing constantly so it gets put through some stuff! It's been in the sun lots, in the heat, and in the cold. The paint has never chipped, faded, or scuffed. It tore once due to my boyfriend trying to pack it and not understanding he couldn't fold the monofin- Raven fixed it when I got to Florida and you'd never be able to tell. I also poked a hole through it when I fell in it and my strong fingernail went through the thinnest part. Again, fixed, and you'd never even if you had it in your hands be able to find the spot. It glows under black light, and this thing was the first silicone one she's made. Her tails have improved SO MUCH since mine, so just think, mine is THIS GOOD and yours will be better :D

Lol well if it's been through all of that... it kind of deserves it's own name. (Though sleeping in bed with it, might get a bit uncomfortable... lol). Looking at the comparison of the basic tail versus the professional one, is there a reason why the basic one does not have those sides on the fluke that the performance tail has? Are they harder to create?

Ayla of Duluth
01-02-2013, 01:46 PM
I think that the basic tail shown in this thread is a custom design. All of her other basic tails have the same fluke as the performance model. I think because the tail has a neoprene base, it's easy to make a custom shaped fluke. So if you like the performance fluke, I'm sure she can do that on the basic tail.

Winged Mermaid
01-02-2013, 01:57 PM
That's right! The main difference between the performance and basic flukes (besides having or not having a layer of neoprene) is that the performance fluke is molded and the basic fluke is textured (no molding involved, just texturing of the silicone). Therefore the basic fluke can be customized a lot easier, and for no additional cost. But you have to specify to her what fluke shape you want when you order, and what she can do with the texturing process for the actual texture (not shape) of the fluke is limited. Otherwise to customize the performance fluke there is an additional cost, as she needs to sculpt and make a whole new mold for you.

Winged Mermaid

do you think she would do the performance fluke on a basic tail? just curious, haha. (even if its a little extra $$)

I'm not Raven, so I don't know, but I can guess just from what I know. If she could it may be closer to the cost of a performance tail. If you want that particular fluke it has to be molded. As far as I can gather, the reason the basic tail is a lower cost is that the scales are cast super thin (so thin that they may be at risk for tearing on their own without the neoprene) then adhered to the neoprene, and the neoprene adds the needed thickness for a durable tail, rather than the thickness of pure silicone- which is expensive. Also I believe a huge difference is the fluke. The performance flukes are one solid hunk of silicone with a monofin in there. It's so solid that I've been told people who have the Foil in their tail can't even tell the difference between the foil and other (non-fiberglass) monofins, as it's one solid piece and all of it contributes to propulsion. Again, more silicone is more money. If she could cast it thin and put it on the neoprene it would be extra but not a huge amount. But looking at the texturing on the performance flukes I'm not sure that's doable. It looks to me that because of the peaks valleys of the fluke texture, that even a thin casting would be a lot thicker than what the thin casting of the scales may be. The high ridges of the side of the fluke are a big red flag to that, and if cast thin they may just not look right at all. Needing to cast it thicker than the scales could also add an issue of the silicone being different thicknesses in the tail and it may cause it to look uneven or have unseemly bumps where the scales cover the seam of the fluke.

I may be just completely talking out my butt here :P but that would be my conclusion based on my observations. But who knows, maybe she can and will if you request it!

I'm pretty sure I will. XP Maybe I'll post a picture, lol!

Anyway, I decided to go with Raven for a few reasons:
1) Fluke design. I like the shape, and I don't like a few of the other shapes out there.

2) Spots. My tail will have spots (small speckles, really) and I saw a tail Raven did with spots. They weren't big and polka-dotty, they weren't so small as to not be seen. They were perfect!

3) Durability. This actually should come first as it was the main reason I chose her. After hearing from many people (especially Raina) about how durable Raven's tails are, and knowing how much abuse my tail would take, I decided I needed one.

4) Nice big fluke. Seriously. I love big flukes.

I could go on, but these are the main reasons. I can't wait to get my tail (probably will be sometime in March) and I will definitely take video of me squeeing when I get it!

I read your review, I was concerned about my measurements too when I first put the tail on dry. Even with lotion it's just very difficult to move silicone around and smooth spots out. When you're in the water/ actually wet it makes a WORLD of difference. You can fine tune it and make sure it's on exactly the way you'd like. Also, you may still be able to lift the fluke once you get used to holding your feet the correct way in the monofin. If you can't do it dry, don't worry. There's lot of opportunity to try it out when you use the momentum of diving deep in a pool. You can do a surface fin slap! :)

See for you, I think you're going to find there's a bit of a learning curb since you've never used a monofin/swam in a realistic tail before. I had the benefit of learning with fabric, then an alex plus tail with a monofin, and it still took me a bit to get it down. I think a lot of the little concerns/awkward things you have will disappear as you come to know your tail and monofin :)

I dare say nearly all of us with belts have real shells on them. My weight belt is made with real shells, and my decorative belt is too. The trick to keeping belts from breaking is to put them on once you're in the water, and take them off before you get out. They only break if you're climbing all over and rolling around. If we can all make it work, I'm sure you can too. if you're feeling extra nervous you can always coat the shells in clear silicone or varnish etc to make them a little stronger.

I'm not sure what you mean by "gunky", silicone itself feels and looks kinda gross. When I saw the photos of the inside of your tail they're very similar to mine, and many other silicone tails so that's normal. However, after you take a tail off if you've used lotion inside it- that will be gunky and stay that way until you wipe it off. The nice thing about silicone is that you can literally stuff a towel in there and pull it out to wipe things off and dry. You may want to do what I did and invest in silicone sex toy cleaner ;) it gets rid of all the nasty stuff that accumulates when swimming (usually your own dead skin!) disinfects and prevents mold, but also will not break down the silicone and is safe for use on things that touch your skin. You can order something online if you don't feel comfortable going to a sex store. I suggest one that comes in spray bottle format!

Actually I don't think she can wipe out the inside of hers. She has a strange nylon-looking mesh all on the inside of the scales. Here's a picture she posted. (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=439797406085791&set=a.415064138559118.107226.364266683638864&type=1&relevant_count=1) I've heard of people using nylon mesh for strengthening silicone before (for the whole of the tail, or just to reinforce certian areas), but so far it's always imbedded in the silicone, not stuck to the surface. I'm sure Raven has her reasons, but it's a bit puzzling for a few reasons. One of which is that she won't be able to wipe it out or wipe it dry. Unless it dries super fast, drying the inside will be an issue, as will washing the lube and gunk out of the material without hurting the material or the silicone. Silicone is very stretchy, but usually if you put silicone on a less stretchy material it loses that ability to stretch as much, and to get a better fit. I have not felt the material, so I don't know how it will effect the silicone in that way. Just puzzling and concerning. Maybe we should just ask Raven about it, since I obviously don't know what I'm talking about with this stuff :P

Mine is like that too though, it's so thin that I never mention it. It wipes out perfectly easy. You can see it in my videos up close with my tail :) Seriously, it might as well be tracing paper. I've never mentioned mine because honestly I never notice it, it's like it's not there.

AniaR
01-09-2013, 03:11 PM
Here's an up close photo, scaled next to my thumbnail so you see how thin and small this stuff really is. I think because her silicone is tinted white it looks like there is more material than what's actually there. Makes it look thicker when it's really just the silicone behind it.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BAMYrzxCEAArQId.jpg:large

I can guarantee from my own experience it doesn't effect your ability to wipe it out or clean it or it's stretch.

AniaR, your nails...They're gorgeous. Tell me your secret. :)
When I said the seams were gunky, I actually meant the outside. I did snap a few pictures, but I didn't think it was necessary to post them as it's not that big of a deal. Here is what I was talking about when I said gunky:
8845
I tried to show it in the video review, but it's really hard to see unless you look at the tail in person. The inside is fine, the seams sit nice against my skin so that's no deal at all. I was just talking about the seams on the outside, where the silicone looks like it was more difficult to work with. The black lines down the sides of my tail do hide them extremely well.

AniaR
01-09-2013, 05:03 PM
Yes this seems to be something with every tail maker. They get better and better at hiding them but unless there's one body mould for someone there is always seams.

As for my nails, that would be genetics. lol They grow crazy long, and I chop em off so I can play guitar

So I got a message from Raven today, the monofin inside my tail is a Finis Foil, not a Competitor. Which would explain the open toe thing. :)

Question for anyone who has a Merbella's performance tail: How big are the bottom water-flow vents? (The holes between the two layers of silicone) My Fish Butts tail has vents like that of about half an inch and they gap something awful (could be the stretching of the neoprene, though). I've also had kids stick fingers into them before if I wasn't careful.

AniaR
01-11-2013, 05:52 PM
tiny and impossible to see without knowing they're there. Certainly not big enough to stick a finger in, and honestly, water doesn't usually get that far lol

Thalassa
01-11-2013, 06:54 PM
Good to know. Honestly, the Fish Butts holes were small to begin with, until kids put fingers in 'em. The first time it happened I heard, "She's not real! Look, there's a hole!" And my tail was yanked. I squawked and did the usual, "That hurts, don't do that!" But seriously? How the heck did they get that in there, and why did they think that was okay? XP So I was a little nervous when I heard Merbellas tails have similar vents. Good to hear that it won't be a problem.

it's literally like a tiny slit, not even a hole! This in mine, after a year of non stop use.

Raina, I'm curious, do your legs get wet when you swim in your tail? Swimming without my legs getting wet sounds so bizarre. xD

AniaR
01-11-2013, 07:49 PM
yeah they do. I think it's unavoidable because it's practically impossible to make something seal at the waist and stay sealed so water and air doesn't get in. If water and air don't get in, you get suction, and that looks bad. I remember reading that in Splash, she was shrink wrapped with plastic inside the tail to avoid the knees and ankles and leg in costume look, but even then she'd get wet too. If I model in my tail on beaches though, and I sit in waves to take photos etc, my legs don't get wet if the water doesn't come above my waist.

MerEmma
01-11-2013, 08:03 PM
Oh, okay. Thanks! I think I'd prefer my legs get wet anyhow. =P

I'm super psyched to see everyone's tails once they get them...I love to read the reviews, as well.

I've got a plan to start up this job where I'll get to make $10 a day (pretty good for a 13-year-old, haha) and within 300 days I'll have $3,000 to set aside for a Raven tail once I start growing. I'm super psyched. I start on Monday! ;)

Also, does anyone know where the video of the woman in the Merbellas tail at Nemo 33 (I think?) for the Christmas card is? I saw the video a while back but since it was in Flemish/French/Dutch/German (Belgium has too many languages...) I can't seem to find it. I've searched for a while now. >_<

Ayla of Duluth

I think AniaR's tail is really interesting because the drainage slits in her tail are on the front of her fluke instead of the bottom between the two layers of silicone. Mine has drainage slits but I can't even fit my pinkie in them. They're like a centimeter long and there's only about 4 of them. The two layers of my fluke sit so tightly together that you literally have to go along the bottom edge of my fluke and use your fingers to try and seperate the layers to find the holes. They're literally invisible.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/d0dd9b05a4c34863c972dd97090f9ede/tumblr_mfwqi6EpXJ1r0wgkuo1_500.jpg

I'm just excited for all of you getting one. You will want to sleep in a bed with it and give it a name. Haha

Okies I have a question!

Does Raven still make tails like the ones in this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekmKSZ4s_nU

I thought (uh oh don't kill me. I know little xD) that Raven started making her basic tails like this. They were lined with neoprene and used a finis rapid monofin. But now, her basic tails look much different. The fluke doesn't look the same with the pictures of the current basic tail model. These flukes in the video look so much more floppy and in my eyes more realistic.

Did she change the design? Or am I just looking at this weird? xD

Elle
01-23-2013, 05:12 AM
I think because of the competitor in Raina's tail, (and it's a stiff monofin) her fluke is completely stiff. Where as the rapid is much smaller in comparison and the silicone makes up more of the fluke than it would with a competitor (does that make sense or am I just rambling here?)

Thalassa
01-23-2013, 07:23 AM
It all depends on the monofin. She stated that the tails in that video don't have a competitor monofin. Competitor monofins are much stiffer. You can order a basic tail with a competitor monofin, but in general they come with a non-competitor, which gives the flowy look.

MerEmma
01-23-2013, 08:16 AM
She mostly uses Finis Foils for her tails, right?

Also, does anyone know which monofin is in the gold&white tail for that Christmas video? I really like the way it looks there.

AniaR
01-23-2013, 08:36 AM
remember, you can choose from several flukes for the basic tail too. All you're seeing is the variety. I think she can combine any fluke with any monofin so long as you're willing to pay for more expensive monofins and understand that the entire fluke wont be stiff unless you have a competitor.

That's what I was looking for xD Sorry guys if I lack sense in my words at 4 AM hahaha xD Thank you!

I personally love the floppiness. But I'm not so keen on the new design for her basic tails. I like the silicone on her flukes in that video. Sort of like your tail Raina, except with the rapid in it. I'm not buying tail from her anytime soon xD If I ever win some money in the lottery or something I will. I don't think my tail has drainage slits. It has the holes between the two layers of silicone at the bottom of the fluke but those don't drain water very well, if at all. I might try to cut some tiny slits in parts of my tail that don't take a lot of stress, just because I feel like it would be a whole lot more convenient. My tail doesn't have any slits at all. No slits like RainA has, no slits at all.

Thalassa

She puts slits in all of them, very unnoticeable. Ayla she puts them in really clever spots and your tail has a LOT of black. Just watch it the next time you're in the water. Hold it flat on the side of the pool and watch where the water comes out

I just want to clarify because we have been getting this a LOT lately, but we are NOT able to put the performance flukes on the Basic tails. I really appreciate the great feedback on the new fluke design but it is only an option for the performance tails. This is one of the main reasons why the performance tails are much more expensive than the basic tails. Please keep this in mind when designing your tail from us ♥

Just thought I'd set this here for those who were asking.

She puts slits in all of them, very unnoticeable. Ayla she puts them in really clever spots and your tail has a LOT of black. Just watch it the next time you're in the water. Hold it flat on the side of the pool and watch where the water comes out

Are they just little gaps between the fluke and the base of the tail?

AniaR

Are they just little gaps between the fluke and the base of the tail? Nope. I already posted some photos :) in another thread, I thought they were here...yes.. see?

Just a tiny little slit, hidden by paint.

is there glitter in your tail? it's really shimmery.

02-02-2013, 11:25 PM
Ah, makes sense since inside of your tail is gonna get wet, but this gives the water a way to escape so your tail doesn't fill up and make it a nightmare. Very handy! Thanks for the reply, AniaR! <3

you know what? I'm not sure if there's glitter in the paint or not. I spilled my mermaid minerals very very fine glitter in a bin I was using to carry my tail. It coated it and NEVER washed off. lol So it could be that.

I wanted to post this again real quick (thank you again to Ayla for linking me to the video again xD) but does anyone know if it's a Foil or Competitor or Wave in this tail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmNGfiRA5ec&feature=youtu.be

I really like the way it flows and I can't really tell. Not sure if anyone else can, but maybe someone with a Merbella knows how theirs look and could narrow it down?

Ayla of Duluth
02-05-2013, 10:36 PM
looks like a competitor

Ashe
02-05-2013, 10:36 PM
I believe it is a Competitor. You can tell because it is very stiff and holds it's shape in the water, instead of flopping around :)

Winged Mermaid
02-05-2013, 11:39 PM
I third the competitor. If you watch the other videos tails with foils in them (like this Merbellas video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekmKSZ4s_nU) with the foil they flop around a LOT. The competitor holds he shape, but it flows when you swim more than you'd think considering it's fiberglass :)

MerEmma
02-06-2013, 09:51 AM
Yeah, I see it now. Thanks so much. The Competitor does look really nice in the water. =P

Winged Mermaid
02-06-2013, 03:37 PM
Just a thought I've had that I thought I'd share. I know the floppy foil option is all the rave right now, but from what I can tell you have much more functionality with the competitor. For example, I haven't seen anyone with the performance foil fin be able to hold it over their head or lift it out of the water. The one I saw in person, she could barely lift the tail to the surface of the water, but then again she's a lot smaller than most (under 5ft I think). There's just too much weight and not enough support for that kind of functionality. Everyone who has gotten the competitor has been able to lift it fine. I could be wrong, but this was just an observation that I though I would share for consideration by anyone thinking of ordering a tail.
On the plus side, I've been told that the floppyness doesn't effect the propulsion- since the silicone and monofin are one solid hunk of fluke, the silicone acts as an extension of the monofin instead of just "being there" and in the way like it is in other tails.

Also, Raven is adding an super cool order option!

Mermaid Raven's Etsy
I like to add a new option to the ordering process, "Raven's choice" I would design your tail almost completely. If I felt the design needed any extra fins I would add them with no charge. and it would be a surprise till your tail was completed. Who would be willing to do this? ;) ♥

Mermaid Raven's Etsy
Yeah I would be fine with you choosing a color or complete artistic liberty:)

I think this is an awesome option. I always tell people whatever artistic liberties you are comfortable giving an artist, do it, because that is when you see their best work! I gave Raven artistic liberty with my coloring, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

MerEmma
02-06-2013, 04:11 PM
You got to order a Raven tail? :jawdrop: Congratulations! I cannot WAIT to see it, either.

And I totally wanted to get the full competitor because there's so much more power there (not anytime soon though haha, I just love to dream about future tails xD) but I was really, really unsure about it being just *too* stiff. Now I'm totally sold on the competitor.

Blondie
02-06-2013, 04:56 PM
I would completely trust Raven with designing my tail. And she says "almost completely" so I'm positive you could give her ideas to what you like and don't like. She'd probably would ask if you have a certain color scheme in mind. But that's just my theory. Doesn't make it true xD I think some of her best tails are the ones she colored herself.

Winged Mermaid
02-06-2013, 06:09 PM
With mine she said that she'd sketch out some color designs and get my input before laying down the paint. So perhaps she would do the same to make sure the customer is okay with it.

Ashe
02-06-2013, 06:34 PM
I can't wait to see how it turns out, Iona! I think the new option is pretty cool. And I REALLY want a competitor in mine, too. I like stiffer flukes that you can move around, without it just flopping over. Just my preference though, a lot of tails with smaller monofins look awesome ;)

Mizuko
02-06-2013, 10:45 PM

You can design your own fluke with both. The basic tail there's no additional fee, but if you want to design your own fluke for performance fluke it's extra since she has to sculpt and make a brand new mold.

So cool that she posted those up! She knows us mers love to design tails!

It was really hard for me to chose between the Angler and Classic fluke shape... I ended up asking 10 of my friends and 9/10 said classic would look better on me than the angler. Plus I asked Raven and the classic is the largest one, so that sold me XD I love big flukes and I cannot lie! You other fishes can't deny.. *dances*

If you can design your own fluke on the basic tail, why can't you have a classic fluke? I don't understand that part.

You can design it's SHAPE, to an extent, but she has specifically stated that you can't change the texture of the basic fluke.

As for adding the cast fluke on a basic body- Basically what I said in this post (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?3783-Merbellas-Thread&p=53471&viewfull=1#post53471) is true. Remember the reason the basic tails are so cheap is because she casts the scales thin and uses much less silicone on the whole tail, and makes up for the thickness with the neoprene. You can't cast the flukes thin like you can the scales because of the great difference in depth of the shape. You have to cast it thick, and to do that more silicone is more money. Theoretically if you got a tail like like that, for all the extra money you'd have to pay for it you may as well get a performance tail. Plus to her it's probably not worth all the trouble and headache in having trying to make a performance fluke with a basic body. Just putting on the extra fins on a basic body were so much of a pain she discontinued that option, so I can't imagine trying to do that with a fluke. In the end it's just not worth it to her or to the customer to have that option.

Yep, I asked her before in my order, and therefore it's not possible; :( But She'll be happy to paint the fluke the same way as possible as a 'merbellas' fluke :)
