I was thinking the other day..could someone make a seahorse tail? The idea seemed kinda weird to me, yet intriguing at the same time. Thoughts?

This would be a huge breakthrough for the mer community, if someone can pull it off.

I think I could pull that off...

I think the real question is whether or not someone could actually swim in it or not, and I don' think it would be possible.

Yeah the dynamics of that costume might not look very nice underwater. But you could make a tail that is based off that armored design look that also incorporates a fluke.

That is a very interesting idea.
If you look how a seahorse moves through the water, you can see it uses its small fin on its back, to move forward.

I would say a human could disguise the legs in some kind of tail costume, but has to use the hands for movement.
Maybe some small weights in the tails end could keep the body upright, but I consider that as very risky.
How to dive down or to surface would be another challenge.

So I would say it's possible, but not really easy. Just my opinion. Please prove I am wrong. ;)

If you made your own long/narrow monofin or used longfins it could be possible aesthetically speaking. Fabric tail, using a springform duct work skeleton, formable wire to hold a seahorse shape. It wouldn' t give a ton of propulsion, would be more for looks/ treading water...would work well for photoshoots. Fin would be concealed within the ducting material, so the seahorse " Tail" would start at ankle level , with spandex to the waist to give a traditional merfolk feel.

I like the idea of using a pair of swim flippers, then having the curling tail continue past them in a longer structure. You could still use the flippers to swim, but they could be disguised with fabric or rubber as ventral fins or something, not unlike those of the leafy or weedy sea dragons.

Hmm well if it anyone tries it, I hope they post it on here! Maybe I could get my dad to help me figure it out sometime. I don't know, I just thought it would be neat(:

That would be an awesome design, but I have to agree with the others about functional/swim ability. Even seahorses themselves are not strong swimmers and spend most of their time latched to various solid surfaces such as corals, branching rocks, and various algae or kelp species. I would worry about the risks of drowning in something like that because there would be very little to almost no control with the feet or fins. However, for a photo shoot that would be incredible. :-)

While that idea is a wonderful one, I don't believe it would be functional one.
