I've been trying to come up with ways to carry things with me when I swim (small shells, waterproof business cards, waterproof camera, etc). I want some sort of pouch, I think. I toyed with the idea of a shell coin purse for some of the items, but I'm not sure that would work. I think one of the most viable options is a pouch out of mesh/fish net (it would have to have a small weave so things wouldn't fall out).

Any thoughts?

This?

But I was thinking maybe a purse made like the kind I had a few years ago. Woven twine with cowrie shells on the top. Can't find an image of it though

That looks close, but I'd probably want something smaller (with a very fine weave, about 1/2 cm holes, if that makes sense) because the shells I carry are very small. I'm looking for something I could tie to my belt. XP I might end up having to buy fine netting and make it myself. *goes to try and find fine fishnet*

Apparently this comes with ten of these, you could put a few on the belt:

you could use something like bathing suit material, and a plastic zipper to close it.

use the mesh they put in side of swim suits... with a draw string closure.. that way it wont be damaged from cholrine..

I coud prob make one..

but i think the mesh only comes in a few colors... ive seen grey, white and flesh..

What if you used a finer mesh to line a fabric that you really liked? You could use a larger weave fabric and line it with a colorful tulle, for example. Or hey, you could layer several kinds of tulle for an interesting color effect or something.

I use my goggles bag (pretty much the same thing as linked above) and it works well for me.

I would imagine you need to strap it down pretty well though so it doesn't fly about while you swim!

I love to go looking in lakes for little things so i have a mesh bag. I think thats the best way to go b/c solid fabric drags you down. The best is to have the draw string on the top with the little clippy-doo thing (NO clue whats its really called sorry) that holds it closed. Its what i've found works best for me. :)

Now I want to go raid my yarn stash and see if I have anything that won't break down with repeated exposure to salt water so I can knit/crochet a little mesh mermaid collecting pouch! I'm not too worried about chlorine, because I'm not a huge chlorine-water person, and if I do go in one, well, I'm not going to be looking for shells, now am I? :P

Lol!
You wouldn't believe what stuff I find on the bottom of chlorinated pools.
I should charge them for fishing up all this stuff, really.

As for a pouch; if you're the kind of mer that does gigs and carries little presents for children, or just like to pick up little things while swimming, a bag comes in really handy.
I made mine by knotting fine nylon strings in blue and green into a very fine-meshed net, and fastened it to my belt.

an organic looking mottled brown faux leather (vinyl), string drawn pouch with a fishnet layer over top of the fabric. Rounded corners like a ball... not square. Or do it in pearlescent fabrics

Made with this color vinyl with fish net sheathing over top of it like one skin.

I do hope to be a professional mer at some point (that comes after getting/making a "real" tail, and also fixing the problem of having a very scarred face), and for entertaining on land (aka handing goodies out to the kiddos), I plan on knitting a little purse with some handspun yarn/recycled silk.
Hm, I've been wanting to learn to make netting (as in knotting, not knit or crochet)... I may need to track down some nylon string, because yours sounds kind of awesome! And I, too, have found some interesting things in pools! It's just I'm usually flat broke or scraping by, so trips to a pool are generally out, but I live near a lot of water!

It's not difficult.
Simply put, you line up a series of strings in the length you need, and then knot them together alternating the overlapping pairs.
It takes a long time to knot a larger net, but you can make the mesh as fine as you want if you do it yourself.
(And I'm too kinda broke after all the stuff I needed to buy for my mer equipment :p)

Thanks so much, Caltuna! I'll have to look into making some bags then. What kind of string did you use? The only thing I think I have suitable is upholstery thread.

As to supplies being expensive - I totally understand! I dropped $20 (all my birthday money) at Home Depot yesterday for things not related to home renovation... Thankfully I just found out we're going on a camping trip at the coast next week, and we're picking out a beach based on availability of beachcombing stuff! So I hope to come back with plenty more mer supplies soon (though a mesh bag would be wonderful for all the teeny shells and agates).
