I know they've had threads about them before, but these two things popped up on deviantART so I thought I'd share...

the harry potter merfolk were so weird and interesting. i wonder what a tail based off of them would be like? much darker and mysterious than most tails i've seen made. i don't think they had scales, either...

Don't look it in the eyes, you'll turn to stone.

I found the designs for the Harry Potter Mermaids extremely beautiful. The tails weren't shark like but more fish like in design with a vertical side to side moving tails.
the facical features though slightly frightening were not ugly in the slightest. they were clearly feminine but aquatic.

When ask how i think mermaids look, i would have to say Half Harry Potter Mermaids,Half POC Mermaids, with a little bit of Aquamarine and H2O thrown in just for fun.
but the Harry Potter mermaids are a large influence.

Saw this post a few days ago and I've only gotten the chance to post now. :) I have to say I really love the Harry Potter merpeople. I love looking at concept art and photos and stemming my inspiration from those. So in order to inspire others and share what I have managed to find, I am about to spam like crazy.

@azaiya - You are all very welcome. I love sharing ideas and and sharing media. It's part of sprouting new ideas. :) And yes thank you! I made it from one of the stills taken on the set of the movie "Fishtales". I love the tails made by JMB FX!

@Bellasea - Yeah me too! I always hear people say how ugly they are but truth is, I love the merpeople from the GOF movie. And I think using their design and look to make a tail for someone here would be awesome. :)

Despite not being a fan of Harry Potter, I love the Merfolk featured there.
They look so fae-like and aquatic <3

Their physique (horizontal tailmove) shows they do belong into the fish category, rather to aquatic mammals (vertical fluke movement), and it got me thinking (again; I've wondered in the past):

would it be possible for a human to swim in a side-undulating way, sort of like a seasnake, instead of the dolphin kick?

One would need a vertical fluke then of course. Not sure how it would be for the knees in the long run.
If I knew how to make a tail, I'd try this out for sure!

Bellydancers can undulate their hips very quickly from side to side. I'm not sure how that would translate in a silicone tail though.

Someone else posted this video on another thread about vertical fins... around 2:05 is where the vertical fin clips start, but I'm uncertain whether there has been any progress (and there's nothing on where to find them or buy them online) in making them, or whether they actually help pull one through the water... he doesn't seem to be moving very fast or going through a decent range of motion as he paddles.

I wonder if a woman could do better, since we're bendier.

I actually found the HP mers to be pretty accurate. As Caltuna said, they look aquatic and like they belong in the ocean. They kind of remind me of Davy Jones for some reason...

Actually, I WAS a bellydancer :D
To swim in a tail with vertical fluke, I'd initiate the movement with an undulating movement in the chest and shoulders though.

I watched the video Joy posted, and I'm sure a woman could do that better, as that guy barely moves his body, most of his propulsion comes from the paddle he's holding.

I'll see if I can find a thread dedicated to this idea (don't want to derail too much here).
