On the imdb trivia page for H2O, it says, "The actresses put full cream milk in their eyes to help them keep their eyes open underwater." I don't really see how that would help..has anyone tried and does anyone have an explanation?

Explanation is here

Most of the underwater scenes were shot on underwater sets at Sea World in Gold Coast, Australia, and it seems the actors found it helped them not to get chlorine irritation.

Of course, the real thing to do is not massively overdose pools with chlorine, but the milk was the solution to the problem for them.

Milk is actually less irritating to the eye than water, even tap water. Although you should only use UHT (Ultra Heat Treated) milk, because it's effectively been sterilised in order for it to not go off so fast as fresh milk.

Isn't there bacteria in milk though? And aren't eyes very sensitive to bacteria?

I have read this before as well. I find simply putting eye drops in my eyes before and after helps.

Bubbles tried this, she found it pretty useful but it was hard to get use to.

Hence the restriction to UHT milk.
