Mermaid Summer

How did you come up with your mermaid name (and or screen name)?

Elaina-Wednesday is my middle name. Mermaid Summer is my mermaid name because summer is a wonderful time and it is the time of some of the best memories in my life .

Mine is just Mer followed by my real name. I'll probably change it once I figure out what I want my mersona to be, I have the personality and stuff down but the name is really difficult. Some day!

my best friend and I used to listen to this song all the time. We would sit in her office and hang out on the computers and she would have this song playing in a playlist with two other songs like it. And then she moved to Tennessee. :( I cant remember exactly what made me think of making it my name, but it's a gorgeous name IMO and it reminds me of her. <3

I was actually trying to come up with mermaid name ideas for my friend! She doesn't post here, but her name is Melanie, so my first thought was Milani (like "Kalani" with an 'M'). We thought it was close, but missing something, so I added different letters to the beginning until we came across Kalani. Melanie liked it, but thought it would suit me better so it just stuck :) I love my mer name and I couldn't think of a better one for me!

I Googled "mermaidy names" and then "gaelic name meanings" and finally came across "Kelby" and fell in love. haha

Dacora

A guy at the church I used to attend couldn't pronounce my name correctly, so Dakota (my real name) came out as Dacora and it sounded like a good mermaid name to me. :p

Mermaid Annariea
01-26-2013, 01:31 AM
my real name is Brianna, and while i was trying to think of a cool name for my first dungeons&dragons character, i sort of jumbled my letters up and took a few out. Brianna = Annariea. i originally had it spelled Annaria, but then i added the "e" because it looked nicer to me.
also, it isnt pronounced exactly how it looks. a lot of people think its "anna-ree-a". but its actually more like "uh-NäR-E-uh" (if you copy and paste it in google translate and listen to it in ENGLISH, thats similar to how i pronounce it, but the "e" isnt as emphasized).
i ended up really liking the name, and it sort of stuck. i contemplated a few other names too, but this one seemed to fit me most, and other merfolk agreed (:

My name is Hales. It rhymes with whales. And scales. And tails. And snails. And sails. And shells, if you're from the south. :)

Thalassa
01-26-2013, 01:42 AM
I looked up names to do with water. Thalassa stuck out to me, and it's Greek for "the sea."

Ariel-Starfish
01-26-2013, 02:23 AM
My real name is Anneke. I searched a good mermaid crossover name for my (now nox existing anymore) FB page. Ariel seemed obvious couse she's my fave mermaid and it also begins with letter A and then I added starfish coz I love them. lol I am such a nerd.

Mermaid Isabela
01-26-2013, 03:16 AM
My real name is Vanessa! But I don't think it's a good mermaid name since in Disney's The Little Mermaid, Ursula used it as her human disguise. Haha. Isabela is the name of a town back home I absolutely adored as a child. It had the best beaches! So I decided to use that instead.

I loved the song that Ursula sang on the boat when she disguised herself as Vanessa. Not to mention Vanessa was very pretty. So yeah, I love your name lol, I don't think it's not a good mermaid name. Or maybe that's because I'm more of a bad girl? lol

Mermaid Celissa
01-26-2013, 09:48 AM
I don't know how I got mine, really. When I first joined the forum, I was named Mermaid Abby [my real name]. After a while, I decided I needed a mermaid name. I tried thinking of names that would be sweet and slip off the tongue...I guess I figured out Celissa and stuck with it!

Nykur
01-26-2013, 10:01 AM
Nykur is kinda like a kelpie, just there is one or two differences in their myths so Nykur sounded more for a merman so I took it :)

I thought she looked super pretty, but I don't want to be associated with a sea witch( A sea witch type mermaid sounds totally cool! ), haha. Even though I like my real name. :D

Taniira
01-27-2013, 08:57 PM
Originally, I really wanted something that started with an "L" (the first letter of my real name, but I spent so many hours going through different name pages that it quickly went out the window as I couldn't find something I liked. Anything I did like I then Googled "Mermaid X" to see what came up for that name. One name I really liked was taken, and then I finally came across Eris (the Greek goddess of Chaos and Discord) which I thought would be a fantastic name for me, but it turned out to be the name of the villain in the Barbie mermaid movies when I did my Google-fu. My boyfriend tried to convince me that it would be OK, but I couldn't bring myself to be associated with a Barbie villian -- especially as she was a mermaid and I thought little girls would associate me with that Mermaid Eris.

I finally decided to go through my old RPG characters, figuring since that I used those names before than obviously I liked them. Taniira was a geeky half dragon/drow that I really enjoyed playing and I thought her name would fit well as a mermaid so I stuck with that.

I was coming up with character names for an online game called perfect world. Usually I go look up all of the greek gods and just mix and match parts of their names xD. Serinessa is pronounced sarahnessa.

Took me forever to decide on a name for myself. I wanted somethign different. So I looke dup everything from sea creatures to ocean realted names anyhting and every language. I finally after doing all that fel abck on my old favorite.. Greek mythology. Heres what sparked my name

In Greek mythology (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Greek_mythology), the Nereids (pron.: / (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English)ˈ (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)n (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɪər (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)i (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɪ (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)d (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)z (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)/ (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English) NEER-ee-idz (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Wikipedia:Pronunciation_respelling_key); Ancient Greek (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Ancient_Greek): Νηρηΐδες, sg. Νηρηΐς) are sea nymphs (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Nymph) (female spirits of sea waters), the fifty daughters of Nereus (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Nereus) and Doris (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Doris_(mythology)), sisters to Nerites (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Nerites_(mythology)). They were distinct from the mermaid-like Sirens (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Siren). They often accompany Poseidon (http://mernetwork.com/wiki/Poseidon) and can be friendly and helpful to sailors fighting perilous storms.

Soooo... nereids.. became Nerine... pronounced (Ner*een) (Like in seen) Hit me up on tinychat and I will say it for you :D

fabric for starters :) and im looking at water-related names now. I like Nixie, Kelda, Araxie, Talula..... Nixie is my favorite though

Mermaid Miel
01-28-2013, 12:07 AM
My BFF was heavily into LOTR and Elvish language after the first movie cameout. My life-long cat and confidant died of extreme old age (18yrs old) that year. So B gave me an Elvish Name to honour her. Cat Silver = Miel Celevon. I took it as my online name.

When looking for a mermaid name I added my middle name, with a twist. Marie became Meria. Meria Miel.

Turns out that while unique, that was too hard for kids to remember, so I shortened it to Mermaid Miel.

Funny fact, Miel also means honey in French, so together it means honey-cat.

Azurin Luna
01-28-2013, 02:17 AM
My name came from my favorite color Azur, but I found that a little to short so I turned into Azurin. Coincidentally Azurin is also a chemical name for the blue haze you get over copper items. I took Luna as my last name as I love the moon and the strength is has over water and so many other cycles in life.

Nyx
01-28-2013, 05:08 PM
My name (nyx) means night, I wanted something related to the stars bioluminescence because I want my tail to glow in the dark, so nyx kind of stuck. Nyx is also a river mermaid/nymph.

Mermaid Marissa
01-28-2013, 09:37 PM
I just used my real name because I know it means "child of the sea" my parents must be psychic lol  My "stage name" for my performances is usually Marissa Monet (my first and middle name) or a friend of mine suggested Marissa de Aqua I choose names that are fun to write :p

Mermaid Enhydrina
01-29-2013, 01:16 AM
My real name's Mallory, and while I love it Mermaid Mallory or Mally(my nickname) sounded dorky to me. I really like snakes so I started looking up genus' and stuff of different sea snakes. I found a list of them and Enhydrina really stuck out to me.

Drusilla's meaning is 'fruitful (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/fruitful), dewy-eyed'. Biblical (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/biblical) name from the element drosos with the meaning 'dew (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/dew)'. The first name is derived from the Roman (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/roman) imperial family (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/family) name Drusus (Latin). In Roman tradition, Drusus was first adopted as a nickname by a man (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/man) named Livius, who killed a Gaulish captain (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/captain) named Drausus (Latin), and thereafter adopted the name according to the prevailing custom. The feminine name was borne (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/borne) by the notorious Livia Drusilla (58BC-29AD), sister (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/sister) of the Roman emperor (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/emperor) Caligula. In the Bible (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/bible), the name was borne by the Jewish (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/jewish) wife (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/wife) of the Roman Felix (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/felix), who was a Christian (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/christian) convert of Paul (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/paul). The name was consequently adopted by English Puritans (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/puritans) in the 17th century. In literature (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/literature), it is borne by the fictional (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/fictional) Aunt Drusilla in Thomas (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/thomas) Hardy (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/hardy)'s last novel Jude the Obscure (http://mernetwork.com/search/f/obscure) (1895). lol
I mainly got it from buffy the vampire slayer though I identified with the character as a preteen? I can't remember my age then, but I was so in love with her. lol Also spelled as Drucilla, which is my user name.

Mermaid Danielle
01-30-2013, 11:03 PM
Well, my real name is Danielle, and I was worried that if I gave myself a stage name, I might not always answer to it, lol :)

My full mermaid name is Mermaid Dolphin Danielle (but the username box didn't like that many letters). The 'dolphin danielle' part was 'given' to me when I visited Ariel at disney world as a 9 yr old (I was wearing a dolphin necklace when I went to see her). I figured it fit :)

I've yet to decide on a mermaid name, but I can tell you about my screen name, which actually comes back to my very early mermaid attempts. Over the summer after second grade my family was asked to watch a friend of mine. At the time we weren't close at all. The whole summer we were fighting, and we didn't make up until October. We disagreed on everything, except one thing. We planned to make mermaid tails someday to swim in, and she set up "mermaid school" in my family's pool where we practiced swimming like a mermaid (to my mom's horror we actually held our ankles together with plastic dive rings). My friend came up with colors for our tails (I was yellow or orange, I can't really remember though) and names for us. Mine was either sunny or sunshine. So when I needed an idea for a screen name for mernetwork, I fell back on my old name. :)

OMG, my sister and I used to do that too when we were little!

02-11-2013, 01:13 AM
Well to start off with my username is a combination of things. Spotted Cat is a username I use a lot online, and I have a joined email account with it. I like cats, and spots or dots not stripes. I added the fish part on the end as this is a mer forum, not really knowing what I was actually doing. When I was making up the name, ironically the movie Catfish had just come out and in time, a Catfish is a person who makes a fake account online pretending to be someone they are not. While I am not "catfishing", as this is really only an interest, and I even have merged some of my mer-interest into my regular life. (cause life can get dull) I find this ironic because I am kind of pretending to be a mermaid. In the more fictional sense that real mermaids are just fantasy. Do you get where I am going with this? I do plan to get more certified (in scuba and freediving) and make it as real as possible as I can. But I find that my username suits me and fills my purpose perfectly. Plus it's unique and I like that!

Aeliana
02-11-2013, 05:54 AM
My real name is Ayesha and while it's sort of exotic I guess it sounds too landlubbery for me. I came up with Aeliana by shopping through Roman names (huge fan of Spartacus haha). It comes from the word 'helios' meaning sun. It just felt right; I love how it seems like two opposing forces (fire vs water) and I'm just there, a mermaid of the sun, balancing the two elements and maintaining the equilibrium. It still feels like I havent quite earned the name yet, but that will come in time I suppose haha.

My sister Hannah chose her mermaid name Sphyraena (pronounced sfy-rain-ah) by looking at the scientific names of fish. It's the latin name for a species of barracuda. We both think she's more of a parrotfish but the name wasnt cool enough for her haha. Still I love the way her name sounds, very mysterious and dark.

Mermaid Dottie
02-11-2013, 12:32 PM
Dot is my middle name, and I started using it when I got tired of telling people how to spell my first name. After that, other people morphed it into Dottie. I like it a lot, but I think I want it to be short for something, like "Dottilaus" or "Dottilina"
With maybe an aquatic surname.... Maybe. I'm still working on that part.

Awesome! It's interesting to see how many of us have been mermaiding, in a sense, since we were little like this, isn't it?

Koral
02-15-2013, 12:20 AM
Koral was actually the name of the mermaid I roleplayed online and drew a lot. She ended up turning into me, and I into her, making one entity. Went through about 3 different tails, all very colorful. Now I'll be in a gold tail which is most certainly "me" with the only thing remaining from old Koral is the name. I answer to it, it is what I'll always be called.

Psychic Tideborn
02-15-2013, 06:09 AM
Well let's see... My screen name is Psychic Tideborn because I am a super gamer nerd and LOVE the Tideborn Race from Perfect World. Coincidentally I used to role play a lot in highschool and had an amazing psychic mer... so when I actually got to play as one in a pc game i about lost my mind. Thus Psychic Tideborn. As far as my mersona name I have yet to completely choose one. I am currently writing a story with a friend and the three brothers in the game are all parts of me. I chose their names from old sanskrit names because I love the legends and I wanted to my mers/mersona to be more exotic and different. Jyotis, which means Light, is the charismatic side of me, Bhima his twin brother, which was a Mighty Warrior in Indian mythology, is the darker side of me, and Aatreya, which was a great scholar and oracle, is the light hearted and spirited side of me. I feel like all three of these could be my mersona but it's so hard to choose one. I used to go by Arashi Tsunami which is Great Storm Wave, but I don't really go by that much anymore xD Anyone have any ideas to help?

SeaGlass Siren

i just use my real name. it's a unisex name.
[quote] It derives from the Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language). The original Greek name, Andréas, represents the hypocoristic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocoristic), with endearment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endearment) functions, of male Greek names composed with the andr- prefix, like Androgeos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androgeos), Androcles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androcles), Andronikos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andronicus_%28disambiguation%29). -random wiki page [/unquote]

It means courageous, and valiant.

I don't have a 'mermaid name', so to speak, but my username is simply based of my love of writing.
I'm not so sure what I'd name myself if I were to become a merman... In love with fantasies though I always am, I don't think I've thought so deeply into it before! Still, a new name for a new life (or at least a new persona. ;) ) would be fitting, wouldn't it?

My mermaid name is Isis, its the name of an egyptian goddes, i loved that name so it kinda stuck!

Fallen
04-04-2013, 07:03 PM
Everyone has such awesome names. I don't have a mer name yet. Fallen is my default handle name since I was a teenager. It was actually Fallen Angel, then changed until it became just Fallen. It's not very mermaid sounding. I thought of Tiki Mermaid, but i'm not set on that either. I have a lot of work to do in creating my merona

Mermaid Momo

actually, I'm trying to decide on what my name should be. I'm thinking of Nelumbo which is a flower:
http://www.getwellnatural.com/images/herbs/Nelumbo-Nucifera-Lian-Zi-800px.jpg
since I really like flowers and my tail designs tend to resemble flowers and flower coloring, but I don't know... no matter what name i think of , It sounds weird or doesn't stick. what do you mers think? (also, there isn't a nelumbo already is there?)

New York Mermaid
04-28-2013, 06:27 PM
My Mermaid Name is Lanai,
But my username is from my New York Roots.

I decided on Lanai because Mermaid Rose is way way too common and Half the people I know, cant even say my full name LOL. I wanted something entirely different. It was between Lanai and Nayi'a. I decided on something kids can say easily (and remember) and sounds a bit different from more common mermaid names.

Carolina Mermaid
04-28-2013, 06:34 PM
My real name is Lindsey, but Mermaid Lindsey didn't sound very mermaidy to me. So after thinking for a while I came up with Carolina Mermaid because of where I'm from and I wanted it to be a part of me.

Aziara
04-29-2013, 01:00 AM
Well, my name is kind of random. I was trying to think of an alien word for a book I was working on for 'light'. The four syllables 'az-ee-a-rə' literally rolled right off my tongue almost before I knew what I was saying. I later used it as my name for a wolf character in an online Narnia text rpg. I got so used to answering to it, it's now my permanant online name. I also answer to Azi :)
my real name doesn't sound very mermaidly (Katie), so I'm not sure if I'm sticking with Aziara or coming up with a new handle. I was thinking of Peridot...

Talise
04-29-2013, 08:23 PM
I was originally on here as Mahina, which had some kind of sea or ocean meaning to it... but there's already a well-known Australian Mahina that runs a business, and people were confusing us.

So I ended up with Talise. It's the name of one of my D&D/LARPing characters haha :P

Mermaid Pickles
04-29-2013, 10:58 PM
Mine has a VERY random explanation. I went througha bunch of names, tweaking a few of my other roleplay characters' names, but never sticking with them. They were Aleea, Aylii, Michiko, and a few others. However, Pickles became my name while I was at work. (I work at a daycare.) I was in a classroom with three year olds, and was wearing a green shirt. One of the kids said my shirt was the color of pickles. One of my coworkers(who knows about my mermaid-ness) passed the classroom and heard the kid. She poked her head in and said "You're not Anna anymore, you're Pickles. Oh wait, nevermind, you're Mermaid Pickles." And that's the random story of how I got my mername. My mersona is a bit more spontaneous and random and bubbly than the actual me (which is almost impossible, but still), so Pickles is the perfect name, and it just fits.

I'm liking the back stories with the names ^_^.

Mines not that interesting, it's a name of a deceased queen from the Wheel of Time series, the books are full of unusual names (Nynaeve, Egwene, Egeanin, Tuon, Nerion and Annoura just for a few examples from glancing over 2 pages) and I liked the sound of it.

My real name is Yvette (pronounced E vet)
I remember years ago, around 2005 where I was sitting at my desk trying to find a screen name for my deviantart account. My mother, who passed away in 2007, helped me come up with it, it has real meaning to me and I feel like the name is part of me.
Since then I had diligently been making mermaid videos on my youtube account, fwmgirl88, which my mother also helped me film most of them.
So I guess that's my name ^_^

Strangely enough, my husband (who says me being a mermaid is silly) says the name Peridot isn't 'mermaidy'. Lol! I think I'm winning him over. After much searching, I've come up with a more watery name. Salina Tideglow. The first name has the same Latin root as 'saline' and 'salinity', and the last name is because of my fascination with bioluminescence. That scene in Life of Pi where the ocean lights up? I almost cried. So beautiful.

My real name is Monika. When I started Bellydancing I chose the stage name 'Amara', which means everlasting, eternal. If I was to do mermaiding professionally, I would just keep the same stage name. My screen name is Shimmygoddess, because I thought it was fun and shimmies are my favorite of all the bellydance moves. LOL. My business is 'Electric shimmy bellydance', so I use Shimmy alot. LOL

I wasn't sure on where to post this, but does anyone know if there are any mers on mernetwork named Selena or Selene? I really want to use that as my mermaid name, but I'm not sure if its been taken already.

Mermaid Kalliope
06-19-2013, 02:49 AM
@Julianne - I really don't know, actually!

My mermaid name "Kailani" came from a search for something that had a sea meaning, but still fit me. Kailani means "Of Sea and Sky" or "Of Sea and heaven" and just... Fit. I can also go by "Kai" for short, which is very close to another nickname I have; "Tai"

I use a lot of names. x.x Tressielynn is my real name, but no one can ever remember how to say it or spell it and it doesn't sound very mermaidy.... Although its meaning is broken down as such:

Tressie - Old Greek for hunter; harvester; guardian and Woman from Therasia

Or: From the Spanish and Portuguese name Teresa. It was first recorded as Therasia, being borne by the Spanish wife of Saint (http://www.behindthename.com/glossary/view/saint) Paulinus of Nola in the 4th century. The meaning is uncertain, but it could be derived from Greek θερος (http://www.behindthename.com/support/transcribe.php?type=GR&target=t%5Eeros) (theros) "summer", from Greek θεριζω (http://www.behindthename.com/support/transcribe.php?type=GR&target=t%5Eerizw) (therizo) "to harvest", or from the name of the Greek island of Therasia (the western island of Santorini). The name was mainly confined to Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages. After the 16th century it was spread to other parts of the Christian world, due to the fame of the Spanish nun and reformer Saint Teresa of Ávila. Another famous bearer was the Austrian Habsburg queen Maria Theresa (1717-1780), who inherited the domains of her father, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, beginning the War of the Austrian Succession.

Lynn - http://www.babynamespedia.com/mplug/0/Lynn.1.png

@.@ It's so difficult to find the meaning of my name. I once found that "Tressie" meant "Warrior, fighter and leader"

BAH!

Well, Kailani is much simpler. XD

I was just thinking about posting the question this thread subject states. Hooray for the search option!

I wasn't sure on where to post this, but does anyone know if there are any mers on mernetwork named Selena or Selene? I really want to use that as my mermaid name, but I'm not sure if its been taken already.

There is already a Selene. I didn't find a Selena, however. I went ahead and did a quick search because I had that page open in a window. (http://mernetwork.com/index/search.php) And just did the username search. Selena didn't come up as a member name yet. But you might want to check again.

My mermaid name "Kailani" came from a search for something that had a sea meaning, but still fit me. Kailani means "Of Sea and Sky" or "Of Sea and heaven" and just... Fit. I can also go by "Kai" for short, which is very close to another nickname I have; "Tai"

I use a lot of names. x.x Tressielynn is my real name,

So pretty. Tressielynn is a lovely name!

I need a mer name. I use deepblue as my screen name because I love the lyrics from Cream's Tales of Brave Ulysses, "Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind." And yes, I do know that the sirens in Odyssey are the bird women of that region's lore, but the song treats them like mermaid sirens of other lore. Heck, I could have been 'tiny purple fishes'- ha.

I've had ideas but changed my mind. I suppose I need to let it come to me and when it sticks, that's the one. I could use my tribal name, but I go by that in everyday life, so I'd rather have something just for mer stuff. I thought of using something from the mer novel I'm working on, but I don't want people to think I modeled the main character after myself... I wish I looked like she does. :p I'd love to rock those kind of curves.

So I'm hoping something will come to me as I make more mer jewelry, start working with silicone, etc. I'm so lucky to have a boyfriend who wants my mer ambitions come to fruition, because he's going to have to do the math for me. My brain doesn't like numbers. /ramble

And I'd like for it to be unique, it's so easy to find a name and find it's like so many other mers, for the obvious reasons which connect us all.

I'm mermaid Ashes or "mermaid asheslaree" but its too many letters for a screen name. asheslaree is my modeling/performing name that dose not have to do with burlesque because I wanted to keep my burlesque persona different from my princess company work just in case of conflict. So thats why I picked it. My given name is ashley, but most call me ashes.

BTW, im new here and i dont have a tail yet. but I plan on getting one soon, because the party company i work for needs a swimming ariel. XD

I've had a name change now! Surly Sea Nymph. Two reasons. One, my being surly is a joke. I'm just not the most socially skilled person and it's often assumed that I'm not nice until someone knows me. I'm working on that all the time. People often tell me, "I thought you were a b* until I got to know you, but you're really nice!" Really though.. working on that. I'm not outright rude or anything, but I'm very frank and don't tend to flower things up when interacting. But once I know someone, I'm much more at ease.lol Two, in Finding Nemo, there's a boat called the Surly Mermaid. I've always wanted that name since, but it's used by someone almost everywhere already. I like the idea of being a sea nymph- a nature spirit attached to the sea, and since the entire time I was away in a land-locked place, all I felt was that it was missing. It was like a part of me was gone and I couldn't fill that space in my heart until I got back to my beloved coast and I will never leave again.

Well ever since I could remember I have always loved mermaids and fairys and the elements and my real name is Rebecca but it didn't look to mer like so that's why I changed it to Rebekah and my mom was going to spell it that way but though it would be to hard for me to spell since she was going to have my middle name be Leigh but it got changed to what it is now Lee so that's why my mom spells it Rebecca Lee and not Rebekah Leigh and my last name was going to be hard to spell also since it's Hungarian polish but I never give out online what my last name is cause if you know me in person and know who I am then you know what my last name is.
I still love mermaids and fairys and I'm going to be 35 on March 8th of this year and I still collect things that are related to them and as far as the elements go I love the show avatar the last air bender and the movie the 5th element so that's were the element part of my name comes from. I also still watch mermaid movies and tv shows and I watch fairy shows and I still collect mermaid and fairy dolls now.
So that's why my mer name is Rebekah The Element Merfairy. I just need help coming up with designs for 6 fluke shapes cause I know each of the colors add on fins colors tops wings and wigs. So if anybody can help me with some fluke shape designs to each of my 6 element ideas please let me know and I'll let you know what the other 2 elements are. When I have everything that I need for my practice look I'm going to be posting a pic of this Doll Devine Merfairy pic that a merfriend here and on Facebook help me with so I can use it here as my profile pic as soon as I can. So please let me know as soon as you can about what I asked above and I hope to hear from you soon.

Originally I was going to with a name inspired by Scandinavian mythology, but after having my Egyptian mythology inspired belly dance name mispronounced by EVERYONE  I decided to pick one that was more user friendly. Mary is my real name so I just tacked on Marine to make it more mermaid-y. It's easy to pronounce and spell, which is good if I ever mermaid in a professional capacity.

Seraphina Suds
02-03-2014, 11:02 AM
My real name is Marilyn, which I thought about using for a mermaid name. But I wanted to keep any potential mermaid career seperate from my "real" life. Seraphina Suds was a character I came up with for a little adventure comic. The comic still hasn't gone too far, but I really liked Suds, so I made her real. C:

I'm worried about this new Disney mermaid book series, though. The main character's name is Serafina. As far as I can tell, the mercommunity is pretty diverse with names; no one seems to have the same or too similar names. So to see something so close to my name is rather disheartening. =/

I love all your names with all their gorgeous meanings behind them and everything. I just named myself after the wife of Xerxes. I thought it would fit since my real name also starts with an A, and my hair will be black soon (Xerxes and Amestris were Persian, so they probably had black hair too). Plus it was also the name of the city from Fullmetal Alchemist, which is one of my favorite shows, so I felt the extra connection there. And then not too long ago I thought of changing it to Ariadne, but it just didn't feel like me. I've had Amestris for so long, I just can't imagine it being anything else. Plus it sounds kidb of mysterious to me, and my mersona is kind if quiet and shy and a bit mysterious, so it fits

My mermaid name is Evangeline. There are a number of reasons why I chose it, with the biggest being that I wanted a name that reflected the area that I'm from. One reason is because of a famous (well, famous in my area) burlesque number originally performed by Kitty West known as Evangeline the Oyster Girl. I love how playful and flirtatious burlesque is, and I love the idea of sleeping in a giant oyster shell!

18915

I've also been influenced by Longfellow's poem "Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie" which tells the story of two separated lovers during the expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia. Most of these migrants came to Louisiana and formed the Cajun culture. I really wanted my name to give homage to my home state of Louisiana. On the forums though, Bayou Mermaid is much easier.

My mermaid name is Rikku. I got by taking the Japanese form of my name, "Derikku", and shortening it. I am called this in my Japanese class, and it's also a nickname I've had for years, so it seemed natural.
Ironically, Rikku sounds almost the same as "Riku", which means "land". :p

Since when do all Persians all have black hair? Sorry, but I just find that kind of racist and offensive....

Hey now, she didn't say *all* Persians have black hair. She said that since Xerxes and Amestris were Persian, they *probably* had black hair - Honestly, every Persian I know has black/dark brown hair (unless they bleach it), so that's not too far of a stretch for the imagination.

Also keep in mind that American media does not showcase all the varieties of natural Persian hair colours - most of what we get handed is dark-haired Persians, so if there are good examples of Persians with naturally light hair, I would love to see them, I think it would be quite striking!

Also, black hair is statistically the most common hair colour in the world... In that section of the world in particular because of simple genetics and natural selection... So it's quite understandable that she could assume that the characters she referenced may, indeed, have black hair - It would be like saying that she thinks a ancient Egyptian character may have had black hair, or that a character of Northern European descent may have had blonde hair.

Sorry, but I find auto-racism kind of offensive (coming from an extremely mixed-race family).

Anyways, back on topic... My mermaid name, Miyu, is Japanese (I am very much *not* Japanese, LOL). It can mean different things depending on what characters you spell it with, but a few of my favorite meanings are:

海由, "sea, reason"
美結, "beauty, bind"
美由, "beauty, reason"

Apparently the first part of my chosen name can also mean "sheep", which is adorable because I'm a fiber artist and I love working with wool (especially from farms where I personally know the sheep!).

I had a whole list of names I was choosing from, and a good deal of them *were* Japanese (though not all). I tend to be drawn towards Japanese motifs, music, themes, etc. because of the peaceful feeling it evokes within myself. I do like anime (a lot), but I try not to be too much of a "weeaboo" or whatever it is I've been called before (I had pink hair, so automatically I was one, I guess *shrugs*).

I did also like the "M" at the beginning, I know it's cheezy and a lot of mers do it... But I think it's cute.

I had a couple of names on my list that somewhat resembled other mer's names, and it seems the reason we all have different names is because other mers don't want new mers taking a name that's already in use (for some reason), even if you don't plan to be professional, people will get all up in arms about using the same name as someone else... I can understand having different screen names for the forum, but I don't understand not wanting other mers to have the same name - especially if they don't live near you - because unless you are my mertender, chances are someone else on this planet has the same first name as you.

Sorry for the rant, but I did get pressured to not use the name I originally wanted because someone thought it was too similar to someone else's mer-name... Even though mine was a letter different (which, in Japanese names, means a completely different name - the other person's name actually means something quite unpleasant and taboo, but it's a colloquial term so the rubbish translation into English makes it sound cute instead).

She's using a Persian name and playing off of modern Persian stereotypes fed to her by a media that often does do an awful lot to make us look like something not-so-pleasant. You may see auto-racism from me, but what I see is my heritage being misappropriated by someone who is more than willing to go off of incorrect hearsay.

I find your apathy towards how I feel about my culture being misappropriated and then comfortably misrepresented really hurtful and appalling, especially since not long ago, you were messaging me trying to find ways to adopt it into a costume, and I tried, as kindly as I could, to let you know that it wasn't appropriate for the era, nor for my culture in general. I would have thought you, of all people, would grasp why something like this off comment is offensive to someone like me, especially since we did touch on Orientalism, and the incorrect stereotypes it puts forth.

I don't project the stereotypes I've been given about Americans on everyone here (whether people end up fitting them in the end or not), so what I was asking was that same consideration to be taken towards me, because it does hurt my feelings immensely - which is saying something, because after living the life I've lived, there's very little left in this world that can do that - and worse yet, when other Persians see or hear that I endure this with people I think are friends, they treat me like I'm foolish for continuing my associations.

On a more pleasant note, I never thought of my hair as striking, so thank you for that, it's a nice word, I'll try to remember to use it more as an adjective for features.19187

I'm sorry, I've gotten a little bum-hurt about the issue after seeing it quite a bit on the forums for a while (mainly from others), as well as various places around the internet. I apologize, I did not mean to direct it towards you and maybe should have chosen my words better (I'm also upset in daily life, and I'm quitting coffee, so I'm a bit of a crabapple. Again I apologize for that). Maybe I should have just said that she didn't say *all* Persians looked that way... :/

You're right, you did give me some very good information on historical Orientalism, which led me to a lot of thinking and research that of course led me down an entirely different, unrelated path, and it was fun and informative, so I thank you for that! I do like learning about things which we are not in school. I do agree that the media here force-feeds us quite a few stereotypes, but many of the foreign programming tends to do the same as well, to an extent (except we really have a narrow cultural funnel going on over here). Also, I've lived in Oklahoma, and it is not exactly the most diverse place in the country :P So the media funnel is even more apparent there sometimes (at least when I lived there, LOL).

I apologize for coming across as apathetic, I truly do... I guess I just got used to having to let a lot of comments about my various family members and myself slide off my back and so it irked me somehow. My brain is stupid about how it reads and interprets words. :( Things get too literal in there sometimes. I have family members of many ethnicities, ( I myself am of an ethnicity which gets enough grief that my family never told me that it was my heritage, I found out by searching a lot), so it really wasn't my intention of coming across racist or apathetic or anything of the sort.

Anyways, yes WOW those are some striking features! Those kinds of images should be in our media more often, as most of the images we're fed from that part of the world are of dark, "swarthy" folks.

Anywho, I apologize again... I'll stop derailing threads now and go work on my tail...

PearlieMae
03-08-2014, 09:42 AM
I chose Pearlie Mae for some roundabout reasons...originally, I used Nimuë la Mer, Nimuë being one of the Ninefold Sisterhood of Avalon. But since Avalon is associated with a lake, I added la Mer to indicate the Sea.

But umlauts confuse people and no one could pronounce it, so I use it for my nom de plume.

Pearlie Mae was actually the name of a decrepit laundromat in northern New Jersey and I always wanted to photograph it...it was so wonderfully ancient! But alas, by the time I got back to it, it had been knocked down and replaced with a shiny, new Dunkin Donuts.

I took Pearlie Mae as a reminder to not let the wonderful things in life pass me by.

03-08-2014, 11:24 AM
Screen name was easy. Aperture came from 2 traits: one being that I'm a photographer and two being I'm a huge Portal fan (it's an AWESOME video game for those unfamiliar.) The platypus came from the fact that I've always kind of used the platypus to describe myself. Adaptable in and out of the water, goofy looking, and nobody is really sure what it is that I do. Name just kinda stuck. Not sure how to pick a merman name, Neptune might be just a little contrived. I dunno, I'll think of something.

Starfrit
03-08-2014, 12:46 PM
My screen name is just a different spelling of my real name, which is Terri-- I kinda started using "Tieri" in places, mostly in fantasy games like Skyrim, since it seemed like a fancy fantasy name and more suitable to Terri.

As for my mermaid name... I'm not really sure yet. I thought about going with Avalon, because I thought it was a good shout-out to where I live (I live on the part of Newfoundland called the Avalon Peninsula) and I just love how pretty the name sounds. I've also started to really lean towards the name "Starfrit", which sort of best suits my mersona's personality ("mersonality"?)... The only thing I'm hesitant about with that name is that it's also the same name as a brand of frying pans (and is actually where I got the name) so I don't know if there'd be problems with me using that name if I were to, on the off and kind of unlikely chance, go professional with my mermaiding.

Then I came up with a cute way of using both my real name and my mer name and making it into my NEW mer name which is Chrissy B. Siren (Like saying Chrissy is really siren LOL) But I recently made a character for a fun roleplay i was doing she is a bit of an evil queen/diva type of mermaid named Kelphinea Kelp (Kel fee nah) and for short she goes by (Kelphine/ Kel feen) It's a kelpy green twist on the name Delphine. I also from time to time refer to myself as "The little Mermaid" not based on Ariel... but based on the original classic Hans Christian Anderson tale. And I prob use that more then anything because my life literally reflects the story like a mirror. The story it's self is symbolic to me in that sense so I simply refer to myself as "The Little Mermaid" if nothing else.

Delphine
03-29-2014, 12:25 AM
Hey, cool names everyone. I'm into them & LOVE hearing your background stories! Offline, I go my Belle. "Delphine" is the mermaid character I created for my senior thesis project. For those unfamiliar with my mermaid work, this was Project Delphine, in which I spent a year researching, designing & turning myself into a mermaid. As I mentioned, I'm into names (and character creation) & spent a while playing around with different names to find something that suited my opal-inspired mermaid. This one fit. I am an artist & literally created Delphine (which means "of Delphi" and is related to "dolphin") in real life, some of her possessions & costume--most from scratch, including various accessories like necklaces, a lion's paw clamshell bra, a glow-in-the-dark/bioluminescent & pearly silicone swimmable mermaid tail. I preformed & did video & photography in several sessions on land & underwater. After all of this, I participated in the senior thesis show through my school & huzzah, Delphine the Mermaid was fully created. I'm working on another character, but she doesn't have a name.. the tail does & I just call Tail II (which is very unoriginal for an artist, I know, but I take my time in naming lol!).

Also, on a side note.. Since I've been on here, I've been seeing a lot of "if/when I can afford it" type posts in regard to hand-made or buying tails. My tail was fully Kickstarter funded, so for any mers interested in creating their own tails, doing a Kickstarter campaign is a lot of work, but worth it! And feel free to ask me questions about the process. Do it, & share your amazing tails with us! =D

I haven't found my mer name yet but really leaning toward Arimissa. The name is from a Pathfinder campaign I'm in, my character is a Cleric of Pharasma (The goddess of birth, balance, and the sea), her race is Undine which is basically a humanoid merfolk. They have blueish skin with scales and depending on how deep their ancestry runs webbed hands and gills. Mine doesn't run so deep but she's pretty bound to the sea. Anyway when we began the game other players were picking names to kind of unify the campaign; Dartanion the ex-nobleman fighter, Porthos the ever changing master of disguise, so of course I had to go with the level headed peace keeper Aramis but to give it feminine quality added the ssa.

So what do you mers think? Arimissa a good mersona?

After thinking about it for the last few weeks since I wanted to get a Facebook page started, I finally picked my name. I wanted something Elvish, I've known that for a long while. It's silly, but I've felt a lot like Legolas in the books. He's warned by Galadriel not to go to the sea for once he sees it, his heart will never feel at home in the forest again. After my first trip to the beach years and years ago, I've never felt at home in the mountains of my land locked state, I'm most at peace near water, so in the spirit of Elfness and mermaidness, Nendili. It means Water lover

(I also wanted something easy to pronounce since I do parties and kids like to ask your name, because it's something they learn from their parents early on about connecting to people)

I originally chose Dione (Dye-OH-nay) as my mermaid name. It's close to my real name (Diane) and is the name for one of the Nereid sea goddesses of Greek Mythology. But as I move into professional mermaiding, I had to consider the importance of name recognition. I realized that clients would never get "Dione" right and would just call me Diane, so I decided to find a new name.

I chose Galēnē in memory of my darling seahorse of the same name, who died this spring shortly after I got into mermaiding. She was one of the most talented, amazing animals I've ever had the privilege to know, and taking her name keeps her close to my heart. Galene is another Greek Nereid - the Nereid of Calm Seas.

I added the lines above each "e" to help people understand how to pronounce the name: Guh-LEE-nee.

My screenname, "Zicoxite," actually originated from a Sailor Moon rpg I did with my sister ages ago. I was eight years old and while I didn't know what zinc oxide was at the time I thought it sounded like a great name for an original character general of Queen Beryl. Unfortunately, nobody can pronounce it other than my sister and I, so I only use it online these days but it's my screenname just about everywhere because no one else uses it so I can get it on any site.

I haven't worked out my mersona or mermaid name yet, but so far I've decided that I want her to be the daughter of a mer and a pirate. The genders of each parent are still in the air because I'm tempted to make her the daughter of Anne Bonney or Mary Reade since they're my favorite real pirates, but there are so many male pirates I could use, too, and I'm not even sure I should use a real pirate. I'm tempted to name her Ethel, points to you if you get the joke. ^_^ I should probably look up some more mermaid-y names. If anyone has suggestions about potential pirate parents or good names for a half-mer character, do let me know!

Sashiyoop (sa-shee-yoop) is my tumblr url, which I got from key mashing and adding vowels. Of course, this sounds nothing like a mermaid name. I've gone by Sashi_of_Yoop in a couple online forums and stuff, so I just added the "ka" to the end of Sashi (which you guys in the chat box were already calling me) and messed around with Yoop until it looked cooler. To my knowledge, though Yupalean isn't actually a real place. I may play around with it more in the future, as I haven't really started going by it, but who knows.

Sometimes I wish I had been a bit more creative, but I really like using my own name (Jessica). But there were so many Mermaid Jessica's already so I had to differentiate myself somehow so I tacked Pearl on the end. I love pearls. I think they are such beautful natural creations (although they make my vegetarian self feel a bit guilty sometimes). Pearl also incidentally sounds like my real surname. So it sort of worked out. Now it has sort of become a pen-name for my artwork and artist side too.

The other thing is that my city is sort of like a big country town. Everyone seems to know everyone for some reason. So everyone knows who I am anyway! Plus I have blue hair so I'm sort of conspicuous.

Mardoll_Star
05-14-2014, 11:45 AM
Mardoll is one of the names of the Norse Goddess Freya. Mar means the sea, and Doll refers to something shining. So the name roughly translates to "Shining Sea"
This word was also used in Old Norse to refer to a mermaid in general also, although it was specifically used to refer to this mermaid aspect of Freya.
I was actually surprised that no one has taken this name yet. So I was very happy that now I can be known as Mermaid Mardoll.

Seeing that my name actually IS Ariel, I couldn't use that for obvious reasons. Even if I was born three years before the movie came out. (I was named after the character from The Tempest.)

So, I decided to think about my favorite things and things my tail would be themed after. My colors are deep blue and gold, almost like a sunset hitting the water. I am also what geeks call a "pega-sister", meaning that I love all things My Little Pony. So I took the lead princess (Celestia) who was responsible for raising and lowering the sun- and snipping it a little to make it my own. Thus I became Mermaid Celeste.

I don't have a mermaid name yet, but I'm working on it.

My screen name is one I've had for probably about six or seven years. I was signing up for something in a bit of a hurry and was trying to come up with a sn fairly quickly. I was reading Wicked at the time so I grabbed it and picked out the phrase "green as sin" which was used to describe Elphaba when she was born. It's just sort of stuck with me since then.

I just signed up, with the name I want to use for my mermaid character (I already work as a party princess and am getting into mermaiding now, yay!)

Aquarianne is the name of the mermaid that appears on the old Gummi Bears show. I always liked her as a kid, plus her name sounds like my mom's name, Maryanne. XD The tail I'm working on won't look like hers, however!

Naufra
07-11-2014, 07:15 PM
I'm still trying to pick out my mer-name and I'm requesting advice from the community! The two main contenders I'm going between are Candesca, from the word "candescence" which means "glowing whiteness," and Naufra, from the word "naufrage" which means "shipwreck." I think the name Candesca would require a light-up tail like a bioluminescent fish, fitting for a deep-sea mermaid, but Naufra would be great for a warrior mermaid, and both are things I want my mersona to be. What do you guys think? If anybody has other names they'd like to suggest, I'd love to hear them. ^_^

MermaidMichelle

I agree that you should go with Naufra. Candesca is a lovely name, but it is a more common choice (especially as it also sounds a bit like "Candy" and "Cascada"). Candesca conjures up the image of a blonde mermaid cozying up to other mermaids in Florida, while Naufra invokes the image of a mermaid riding a storm upon the high seas.

Edit: I shall also add that Naufra, being from a more obscure word, is more likely to provoke thoughts and questions regarding its origins, allowing you to explain more of your backstory.

Lostariel Telrunya
07-15-2014, 06:26 PM
My BFF was heavily into LOTR and Elvish language after the first movie cameout. My life-long cat and confidant died of extreme old age (18yrs old) that year. So B gave me an Elvish Name to honour her. Cat Silver = Miel Celevon. I took it as my online name.

When looking for a mermaid name I added my middle name, with a twist. Marie became Meria. Meria Miel.

Turns out that while unique, that was too hard for kids to remember, so I shortened it to Mermaid Miel.

Funny fact, Miel also means honey in French, so together it means honey-cat.

That's what I did too! I am a MASSIVE LOTR fan, and (this is where I transform into LOTR Expert of Everything) I had just recently learned the Elvish language. I took the original meanings of my first and last name, and they both came up with common nouns in the Elvish language. Chloe (my first name) is Greek for 'tree' or 'shrub' (yes, elegant I know :P), and Lostariel means 'vineyard' in Quenya, and 'seaweed' in Sindarin (the two branches of the Elvish language). My last name is Thiessen (which is Mennonite, but it was translated to 'light') is Telrunya when you are using the correct grammatical system.

hmm maybe. flyer2002 came out of flight simulator games and is used on sites I am not conferrable my family knowing about. I would change it to my usual traisjames where I use everywhere, but there are others in line for name changes and mine isn't that important so I will wait until I figure out my mername. Maybe Merman Fluffy, I have lots of hair on my face, arms, and legs (none on my back for some reason which tends to surprise people), so they call me Fluffy because of how I look out of the water (and not because I use cats as hats). I got the name Lucinda from a character in "Ella Enchanted" (the book, that is.) Liked the name, but not the character, so I decided to keep it mind as a name for a character of my own. I remembered it as I was desperately trying to find a good mername but realized that all the obvious mythical references would be taken. Since Lucinda comes from "lux" which is Latin for "light"... I figured why not? I then added Morningsong, just in case Lucinda was already taken.

First of all. Stargate. yes. Thank you, I was not the only one. As for my mermaid name, I toyed around with Alara (the name most of my cosplay people call me when I go to conventions), Aylii, Ailin, Niri, and a few others, but unfortunately, the name given by a three year old takes the cake. Pickles. It just stuck. I'm stuck as Mermaid Pickles, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

I originally was going to use the name Aurelia, but I had been throwing around a few other names, including a few that were variations of my actual name. I chose my name; Freyja, mostly for two reasons.
It's my pilot call-sign (name) with my Viper pilot crew of Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi cosplay group).
Secondly, it also represents my Scandinavian heritage and Freyja was the name of a family member I loved dearly, but who is no longer on this earth.
She was also the one that got me swimming before I could really walk :)

My mersona is a cranky octomaid with a habit of eating humans. She's the unfortunate victim of MAD SCIENCE, which is how she got into her tentacled predicament. Her name is Molly Cephalee, but unless you know her really well you better call her Cephalee or Cephie. The name is a pun on mollusc and of course cephalopod. Also Molly means "bitter", and she is extremely bitter and often hostile for a number of reasons. ONE DAY I may write a story about her, I dunno.

Triton-Mahtlinnie
01-11-2015, 01:21 AM
My mersona's name is Mahtlinnie, of the Kopachuck pod. Both words are Chinook Wawa, a jargon language native to the Seattle area where I live. It's not commonly spoken anymore, but it's very common to find boats, parks, place, ect. named in the language.

Mahtlinnie means "towards the sea" but can also be used as a command to "keep off" when aboard a vessel. I think it fits well with my mersona's personality. Both the more lyrical nature of the name and the surly second meaning. Kopachuck means simply "at the water"

. . . neither of these things have anything to do with my screenname though. Haha. I use the same screenname on every website, and have had this one for around 8 years now. I feel obliged to use it whenever I join a website.

But it kind of struck me that Mer Odyssey might fit me because I always seem to feel like I'm on a big journey of some kind, trying to reach the end, but I just never know what's going to happen on the way there.

I'm just not sure if any one is already using it or not or if it would make for a good gender neutral mer name. But if someone already goes by it (here or not) I would work on finding something else.
