This was inspired by the mermaid names thread, but just different enough that I thought I'd start a new one.

What are your favorite mermaid names? They could be one's you've used yourself, or given to a character, that another mer has used, one that you've made up or whatever.

Here are some of mine.

Miranda - Gave my daughter this one.
Anastasia - Ditto (middle name).
Hannah - One of my mer heroines
Ariadne - Ditto
Tara - Ditto
Drusilla - One of the mers here
Mina - Ditto
Talia - Can't remember
Eslpeth - Ditto
Melesende - Ditto

I find that any good female name is a good mermaid name, but some seem better than others. What are your favorites?

Hmm, I'm not sure. When my sisters and I were little we always used names like 'shell', 'crystal', or 'coral'... I'm not really sure if I have a favorite...

Unfortunately for me, you people just put up all the names I could think of. However, sometimes, I find that strange ones seem to work. Like mine. It just fits. It's not going to change, because it fits me perfectly. My friend's nickname is Rainbow, and that's going to be her mermaid name once I make her tail. Oddly enough, my imaginary friend when I was little was a mermaid with a rainbow tail. Her name was "Colorful". So I guess, sometimes it's the odd names that work best.

Personally, I think I want my mermaid name to be Nezzie...or Nezzy. I'm not sure yet. I like it a lot, as it sounds nice and resembles Nessie (Loch Ness).

My favorite mermaid movie is Aquamarine... So I like color/gemstone names

Emerald
Peridot
Cyan
Teal
Amythyst
Onyx
Lilac
Opal
Pearl
Coral

There's a whole lot more color and gemstone names, just can't think of them at the moment. :)

I needed names for the characters in my mermaid stories, and I looked to Cornish for inspiration. (Especially as they are set in Cornwall!) I ended up using:
Kerra (means "dearest")
Zethar ("seagull")
Kensa ("first" - she's one of twins!)
Tamon ("sea pink", a flower)

Glad you like them MerEmma - I will be coming up with more as the third book features a whole clan of maids! One I will definitely use is Morveren, the name of the mermaid in the local legend "The Mermaid Of Zennor".

Brine

I know I'm a bit late, and I'm new here, but my name was inspired from the sea itself. They call it the "Briny Blue" And it stood out. Also, I like the more unusual names, One I came up with is Akyralana for a story. And then there are the completely sea inspired ones. Brill, SeaMist, Salt, Coralia, Merlina, Foam, Bubbles (^-^), and other such names.

Ariadne is the name of the heroine in my WIP novel Spindrift. She's the golden scaled mer being carried by the handsome naval officer in my sig. :)

Love that!

I've used Nimue la Mer since the early 1990s. Nimue is one of the ninefold sisterhood of the ladies of the lake from Arthurian legend. I added la Mer for a more oceanic sound.

Pearlie Mae is more homespun and easier to remember and pronounce. (I plan on teaching water safety.) It actually comes from an old laundromat that I always wanted to photograph, but it got torn down before I could get back there. I like the Southern twang of it.

It's also the name of my Etsy shop!

I've always liked the name "Marina". I think it's because of this little mermaid cartoon my cousin used to put on when she babysat and wove rugs.. It was an OLD cartoon too, like, old anime or something. I just remember there was a mermaid named Marina, and she had a dolphin named Fits or something, and it was my favorite movie even though it stayed true to the HCS story and she dies in the end...

So yeah, I think Marina is one of my favorite mermaid names for sure. :)

Fritz! Yes! I knew I was close (I never am 100% sure sometimes how I hear things... My English may sound convincing, but my ears trick me all the time :D ) I don't know whatever happened to the VHS I had, my guess is it got left behind when we moved, with a bunch of other VHS tapes for that matter.

Everyone in my family loved that movie - not for the obvious reasons of "it was a good story" either - it was just REALLY good at keeping my sister and I quiet when we were little. lol
