This thread is for ordering information on the Large 47mm Sequins from Victor Enterprises. This thread is also for organizing and splitting orders between multiple buyers, or trading colors.

Specs:
Size: 48mm
Thickness: 1mm
Prices:
High crystal shine - $35 / Kg (diamond shine/ rainbow)
Real crystal shine - $ 36 / Kg (Ice shine)
Pearl - $30 (matte)
Crystal Rainbow - $32 / Kg (iridescent)
Holographic dots / stripes - $30
The minimum order is lowered to 3 Kg. Which means 3 kg will be the minimum parcel that will be sent out to each person. Minimum order is 3 Kg per design/shape and 1 Kg per colour(stock). So for a 3kg order you can get 3 colors. (or 2.2 lbs of each color).
It has been estimated that it takes approximately 3 pounds to make one tail, closer to 4 if you cover the entirety of the fluke as well as the body. You can sew with a sewing machine straight through the top of the sequin to attach it, instead of having to sew through the small hole at the top.
Shipping:
The shipping for a parcel under 5 Kg (Fedex, DHL) is $20 per kg, and for parcels above 5 Kg is $16 per Kg.
Color chart:
Here is a color chart for their products. To see more of what the colors look like, and how the different shines look, you can visit their website and look through the products pictured. They can cut the shell sequins from any sheet they produce. You can also look through the PDF they included in their email to me, which you can download here.
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc227/winged_mermaid/47mm%20sequins/COLORCHART.png
They also make the sequin Sheets. These are PVC/ Plastic sheets. These sheets are rolls that can come Laminated or Solid Opaque. Ask for Grade A(virgin) or Grade B(recycled - mostly used). You would have to inquire for full sheet pricing.
They can make any of the designs on the webpage and custom designs. Any of the variety of 10 – 12 types of base sheets can be used to cut out the designs.
Price breakdowns:
Estimated need for tail- 3lbs or 1.4kg. This is an estimate that depends on spacing and coverage.
Half of a 3kg order is 3.3lbs, so you only need half an order to make a tail, and a full order can make 2 tails. Many would want to split 1 order with another, so here are the price breakdowns for both with shipping from manufacturer to a single customer included.
High crystal shine (diamond shine/rainbow)
$165 total for order
$82.50 for half & per tail
Real crystal shine
$168 for full order
$84.00 for half & per tail
Pearl
$150 for full order
$75 for half & per tail
Crystal Rainbow
$156 for full order
$78 for half & per tail
Holographic dots/stripes
$150 for full order
$75 for half & per tail

US Supplier:
Mermaid Shelly's Grotto also sells these sequins in their boutique and online via etsy.
You will want to order from her if:
-you want a wider selection of colors, rather than the limited amount by ordering
-you want limited quantities, as she sells them by the pound
-if you are not comfortable ordering over seas
-if you do not want to wait for the order to be made and shipped
-if you are not comfortable ordering a 3kg but also do not want to split an order with others
Also if you would like a sequin tail, but are not the crafting/sewing type, Mermaid Shelly makes amazing tails with these sequins. She is a highly recommended tailmaker.
Shelly sells the sequins for $50 a pound plus shipping. You can find them on her etsy, here (http://www.etsy.com/shop/MermaidShellysGrotto), or you can visit or contact her shop.

I have communicated with Vector as well and I am getting conflicting info on the Minimum order. I was told recently that the minimum was 5kg rather than 3kg. I would be much more able to purchase 3 kg than 5. BUt they sent this to me a couple of days ago. So just in case anyone else is interested in ordering, there may be a different Minimum order.

Normally the minimum order is 6kg. However he graciously lowered it to 3kg for us. Perhaps mention that you are with the mermaid community and that Mermaid Iona noted that the minimum order was kindly lowered by him for our group and that you would like to take advantage of that great opportunity :) Let us know how it goes!

Is express permission really needed when links are provided, and the photos are public anyway? That's like saying you can't link to any photo ever unless you get the owner's permission.

They are linked, yes. But the links are broken, each one I have tried does not work.
Edit: Talked with Iona, she's going to check/fix the links
Mermaid Kelda

It's because the colon is missing from the links (after the http). Either it needs to be added, or everything before "www" needs to be removed.
In any case, until it is fixed, if anyone wants to view the pages they can remove the "http//" before the link.

I'd like to get some of the 1cm shell sequins on the 15th page of the PDF, but I'm a bit confused about the available colours and finishes. Can I get any of the colours listed in any of the finishes? So, can I get sea green in real crystal and sea green in high crystal shine?
I'd also like to see a picture of all available colours as they appear on the actual sequins. I don't think the colour chart can be a very good depiction of the actual colours, since they'll be all shiny.

They have 1cm sequins too? I didn't know that! If thats the case I might be interested in getting some too. I want small scale-like sequins on my neoprene tail and Cartwrights is the only place I knew of until now to get them and they charge the earth to ship here *sigh.* if this place is more cost effective I might just be interested in ordering from here

As far as I know, yes, you can do that. BUT you have to order 1lb of each. So if you want get sea green in real crystal and sea green in high crystal shine, you will have to get 1lb of each of those.
Sorry, all the information I know is in the original post. You'll have to email Vector Enterprises if you want specific answers. The good news is that they're good about replying to emails quickly and are very helpful, in my experience http://mernetwork.com/index/images/smilies/smile.png

Thanks Iona, I'll do that :)

Well my tail will be predominantly green, which is what you're wanting too I gather, so this could work. Only thing is, I'm not planning on covering the whole tail in sequins. I was thinking of doing it painted, with sequins partially covering it, something akin to Hannah Fraser's blue tail. So I wouldn't need as many. It sucks that when ordering from here we are very limited in the variety of colours we can use, since if we order one colour it has to be a big order of that colour, and you can't really mix and match all that much. Which is why I was thinking of going with Cartwrights, because you can order smaller amounts of multiple colours from them.
Mermaid Kelda
01-22-2014, 06:08 AM
Green was definitely up there on my list, but I haven't really decided for sure what colours I'd like - I'm going to email them to see if I can get a picture of every colour they have available.
I would be covering the entire tail, but even still, that'd be a lot of sequins left over if you don't need many.
I don't suppose you've done any calculations for how many sequins you'd need from Cartwright's? I may have to let you make yours before I start so I can see how many are needed xD
Mermaid Kelda
01-22-2014, 06:13 AM
Oh wow, I just had a look at Cartwright's stock, and damn they have a lot of options! I love how they have photos for everything, too. I may just go ahead and get some sample sizes to test colour schemes :)
Aino Revontuletar
01-22-2014, 06:21 AM
Well I would definitely be interested in seeing pictures of each colour too, so share them here if you get them. I haven't done any kind of calculations or anything, I was planning on just making an uneducated guess and hoping for the best, haha. Since I hadn't planned to cover my whole tail I figured the number wasn't that important, just as long as I had vaguely enough to get the effect I wanted. I may yet change my mind and choose to cover the whole tail though, so it is good to see what options are out there. If you decided to go with Cartwrights too we could also make a combined order and split the shipping from there, that could work too

Just put through an order for 21 different shell colours. I'll be sure to post pics when I get them, and if we both decide we'd like to buy from them I will definitely split the order with you :)
The shipping was $17, which I don't think was outrageous for the number of packets I bought.
Aino Revontuletar
01-22-2014, 06:54 AM
Oh cool, yeah that is not too bad for 21 different shell colours I guess, depending on how much is actually in each packet. It says the little packets are 200ct, whatever the hell that means (200 sequins per packet??). But yes definitely share pics when you get them, and be sure to test them out and see if they scratch their coatings off easily or not. I think I read somewhere that some of their finishes come off easier than others

01-22-2014, 07:13 AM
To be fair about the shipping... They are coming from India, I believe. And you can't quite pull an "auntie, please" over the internet to a large company to fix that. ;)

I was referring to Cartwright's sequins, which come from the US :) It would probably be cheaper coming from India.
Edit: Cartwrights say on their order page that they recently started offering an economy shipping option, which I'm not sure if they had last time I checked them out

I read it as "count", so yeah, I'm assuming it means 200 pieces. I may be wrong, but what else could it mean? xD

For sure! I've heard the holographic ones are the worst, but I'll do scratch tests on all of them to see. I'll soak them in chlorinated water, too, just to make sure.

I had Mermaid Shelly's personal e-mail as I had ordered some large sequins from her late last year. I just tried to contact her and got a response from someone saying that she passed away in November and to please stop contacting her about tails, but they were nice to send me a link to her blog to read what she was preparing for her last days.

I have ordered from them. They company is based in Maharashtra in India. Good communication but lack integrity. Shipping can be pricey (shipping cost just over what the items in total were worth.) but the sequins are nice and big and shiny. Ordering in bulk is highly recommended.

As far as I know, Shelly LaPointe is alive and well. It's just her mermaid persona of Mermaid Shelly that "passed away" as she wished to leave the mermaid community and leave her mermaid persona behind, and move on in life. I'm not sure why they would say that she passed away without being specific, making people worry? Anyhow, I hope you can get the sequin situation worked out!

As far as I can tell they're trying to coordinate orders becuase they make them in big batches, which is why the usual minimum order is 6kg. But this case they're lowering it to 3kg (6lbs) for our community. They still make big batches though, so that's why they're trying to do them together. They will end up making 6kg or more but are splitting them up and shipping orders that are 3kg. As I said previously you can get a few different colors, since they have to make 1kg min of each color. So for a 3kg order you can get 3 colors. (or 2.2 lbs of each color).
It has been estimated that it takes approximately 3 pounds to make one tail, closer to 4 if you cover the entirety of the fluke as well as the body. Which is why I made this thread in the first place, so two people can go in on and order together if they don't want nearly 2 tails worth of sequins.
I'm just a middle man posting information though, if you want more information or want to order you need to email or call them. All their contact information is in the first post. Be sure to mention you're with the mermaid community, as they're doing these special offers for us.

Seriously considering doing a full size, 6 kg, order, making a tail, then giving the rest away one at a time as trinkets at festivals. Then I'd also have the extras on hand in case any break. And at least I'd go aproximately 45% as insane as someone making sequin tail using 22 mm sequins :rotfl:

I had to bug them a couple of times, but I got through! Hooray for persistence!
Even though I didn't ask about mermaid pricing, I guess they saw the word "mermaid" in my email address and added the line about "we would be happy to help a mermaid get her shine" and offered me the lower minimum order.

Ooh What colours did you end up ordering? Keep any extras you have for repairs, I have to repair my sequin tail on a weekly basis because the larger sequin shells get caught and snap quite often. Thanks for checking in to see if I needed any but I've started switching mine over to the 12mm smaller sequin shells from Cartwright.

I got my scales and they're so pretty! I've done NOTHING all day because I've just been holding them up to the light and playing around with patterns!

Depending on the light they're COMPLETELY different colours. In the kind of yellowy light in my apartment they look green, but with just the flash from my camera they look purple. SO COOL.

As pretty as the finish I got is, don't go for the high crystal shine. The finish peels up pretty easily, so I don't think it will last very long.

aw, bummer! When it peels up, are the sequins clear underneath or the same approximate color?

I have received my order and compared the sequins to the 22mm Cartwright sequins. I haven't swum with them yet (soon!) but I have to say I LOVE working with them so far. They are much thicker than the Cartwright sequins, but as in Shelly's tutorial my sewing machine goes right through them without much effort. I do recommend using a denim or leather needle, though, FYI (I don't think she mentioned that), to avoid skipped stitches. One caveat, the iridescent sheen does overwhelm the base color of the sequins. I have the "DEVD" finish (High crystal rainbow) on most of mine in a variety of colors, and they all pretty much look bright green in direct sunlight. The example below is purple and lilac (DEVD) with the occasional white (CR-- the discontinued crystal rainbow colors) thrown in. The picture shows the same sample at different angles!
I can also answer the previous question I posted-- the base colors of the sequins are opaque and will show up as whatever colors you ordered. The underlying plastic is pretty dull, but not unattractive, if the finish should peel off. I should also mention they come with three holes for sewing, and that the round bit at the top is extremely easy to snap off. So you'll appreciate those other holes!
I'll be placing another order soon, within a month or two, so I wanted to let folks know in case they would like to jump on! If I have a big enough order (10kg), there's a chance at getting a bit of a discount on the price, which I can pass on to you. :)

In their defense, they are an Indian company and the symbol is ancient and has other positive meanings in India. Not that it'd be a good choice for an American or European mermaid, that's for sure!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
That the Germans took an ancient sacred symbol for good fortune and corrupted it so thoroughly is about the worst example of cultural appropriation I can think of.

Yeah, when I was Japan I saw swastikas pretty often on Buddhist temples.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161019/863fea6ae520c5edc9db935004fb4b7a.jpg
I think the nazi version the swastika had clockwise arms, while Hindu version is often counter clockwise.

I totally know the origin of the swastica- So even if you view it as a religious item, IT'S A VERY WEIRD THING TO MAKE INTO A SEQUIN. Seems rather flippant to me, even if you ignore the nazi conotations

I'll ask them what the lightest colors they have are. :) I'm not sure they have a true light pastel mint or purple, but they do have lighter golds and pinks. I can also try a couple of different finishes on white, too. And definitely adding in more blues! :)
Oh- hey, are you looking for transparent or opaque sequins?

I'm going to place an order for some of these large 48mm sequins. Whatever I don't use I'll put up for sale but if anyone wants to jump in on my order with some other colors let me know. These are the colors I'm getting: bright pink, lighter peach pink, iridescent white, teal, beige and black (maybe an iridescent black).
I know I won't use a lot of the teal, beige, or black so if anyone wants some of those colors let me know. I'm also not "set" on just using these colors so if you want any others let me know. I may also order some smaller quantities of other colors from Etsy Fancy Fish (Dancing Fish) so I might have a ton of leftovers.
I'm in Tampa, FL so US shipping only or if you go to any of the Florida meet ups I could probably get them to you in person. You'd pay for the cost of shipping from me to you. You can message me on FB Mermaid Aerial Princess if you want to talk offline/off MerNetwork.
These are the prices I was quoted: $30/Kg plus $13.50/Kg (min order 6Kg for this shipping price). From my tentative calculations it will end up being around $0.05 per sequin (all depending on how many sequins are in a Kg)
I'll probably be placing my order in the next week or so. I'm aiming at Feb 17th to order.

Hey, I've never posted on Mernetwork, but I've been a long time lurker! I am currently looking into revamping a lot of my hand painted neoprene tails with sequins and I love the size of these Vector Enterprises ones (as I am a heavier set mermaid and I feel like it would be more flattering) and I was wondering if anyone knows if they still let you do orders with only a 3kg minimum? I am worried less about price and more about convenience.
I was also wondering if anyone has recently made a tail with these bad boys and has any videos of them underwater? I have been humming and hawing for a while now over colours and finishes, and I am really undecided as to what I'd like to do. I have a lavender/dark purple tail I'd like to revamp, and I was thinking of their lavenders and dark purple colour in a metallic finish. I also have a baby blue/pink tail that I think would look amazing with iridescent white, but the jury is still out.
Any information that could be provided would be super helpful! For reference, I'm in northern Canada, so I'd rather have it shipped straight to me from the company than bundle on a bunch of orders.
