Since many of us female mers have guys asking us for photos, I wanted girls to read this link and give some serious consideration to your internet privacy etc. http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/this-man-allegedly-hacked-into-over-350-womens-fa

Always be weary, With facebook you can add secondary validation systems through alt emails and your phone that generate a random one time code each time you log in to prevent hackers. I was hacked bad a few years ago, so I use secondary validation systems on everything I can. Someone has routinely been trying to hack my mermaid stuff (email, website, FB page, even my MN account) and they haven't been able to because I have secondary and in some cases a third form of validation. You can set a lot of that up through the website's security settings and then through your phone and aps. Frequently changing your password helps too. Also, if you're constantly being sent "password reset" forms but you haven't requested to change your password for a site- this is a good red flag that someone is trying to get into your account. Thankfully, most sites lock down after too many failed attempts.

On the topic of men asking for photos, I wanted to remind people on MN you shouldn't PM people and ask them for photos, and if a member gets a PM like that they should contact a mod right away. We have lots of ways to share images on MN. People don't need to be privately approached.

Hmm, yeah. I used to have Instagram and other things like that, but ever since I started learning about these kinds of things, I deleted my accounts. Not that I was scared or anything (well yeah, maybe) but I was able to see what could happen, and instead of saying "oh, that will never happen to me" I said "who knows?" and now I feel a lot safer :) I don't post pictures of me anywhere that clearly depict my face either, I'm only 13 and I know that there are some creepy people out there who target kids like me. So yeah, reading about that was really interesting...

Thanks for posting, Raina. I'll definitely be looking into secondary features for some of my accounts...

Actually, while we're talking about security, there's a hidden issue with uploading pictures to a website if they contain hidden metadata, or EXIF data included in the file that can tell someone the exact GPS location of where the picture was taken. Thus a picture taken in your backyard pool can tell someone where your house is, and in fact, burglars have used the hidden GPS data from pictures in listings of expensive items for sale on ebay or kijiji to find the location of the house of the seller and do a theft.

So I guess the moral here is to not put nude photos online if they are meant to be private? That sounds like a pretty easy rule to follow. I want to know how he learned how to hack FB, email, and Skype though. The article says its simple.
