This is just a little video of me singing Girl On Fire by Alicia Keys. I haven't had any singing lessons and it's a bit shaky, but I just wanted to see what people think.

Huh, nice job! If you are considering singing lessons, I'd say definitely go for it! You have a lot of potential, and a proper teacher would be a huge help with reaching that. Good luck!

Work on your pitch, you're doing the best thing by recording yourself, and listening to it back, this will help you to correct yourself, download a piano app if you don't have a real one! And practice by playing a note and then trying to match it, also do some exercises for diaphragm support and core strength exercises!

My only criticism is that by the sound of it, you're trying to emulate the original singer, whereas most people sound the best when they sing with their own voice which can be found through practice!

Much lovage

you should work on pitch a little more, and practice some breathing and diaphragm techniques. my teacher used to have us bend over and pick up out chairs, so we would be at a 90 degree angle, perpendicular to the floor, and it was really hard. also, it sounded a bit harsh. i don't know how to explain it, really... sort of like you were sing-shouting the lyrics. but i also don't know what alicia keys sounds like, so i have no idea if that's what it was supposed to be haha. but no worries, that'll be fixed through practice.

practice, practice, practice! :D practice makes better!

also, to everyone giving advice, anyone wanna give me some helpful advice? i usually critique my own videos, but it's always better to have outside opinions...
this isn't really the style i usually sing... haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_236my9IYA
this one is me singing in finnish with only instrumental. if anyone knows finnish, please help with pronunciation. i'm awful at this lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPCFUUkVUPY
also, this one, this is my usual style, along with the finnish one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Uhih9BeO0M

Apart from the chair bit you mentioned you copied what I said; not cool

i didn't know that it wasn't okay to reiterate what someone else says?
those are the major points she needs to work on, was i just not supposed to comment at all? if someone critiqued me, and only one person said something because no one else wanted to agree and point out the same things, then i would personally wonder if they were definitely what needed to be fixed or if it was just something small that wasn't a huge deal, maybe that the person critiquing was picky.

if you're really upset that i agree with your points (which are things that i personally noticed anyways, and i didn't copy what you said, the only two points that are the same in our comments are the pitch (which is a HUGE THING IN MUSIC) and the diaphram/breathing techniques (which, again, is a HUGE THING). you also said that recording was good, and that she should download a piano app, and that she was emulating the singer's voice, none of which i said.

you aren't the only person allowed to give advice. i've had experience singing, too.

Well anyway, thanks guys! I'm really happy that your giving me your honest opinions. I do agree that I need to try to find my own singing techniques. I've only really started practicing about a week ago, and I haven't been able to have any lessons yet so I don't know how. Could someone tell me how to be able to sing loudly without sounding like your shouting? I was trying my best, but it still doesn't sound right.

no problem, sweetie :D

another tip, in case you ever sing higher notes (since that's sort of my thing), this is going to sound weird, but imagine the sound coming out of your forehead. like a unicorn. that's how my teacher explained it to me, and being a soprano 1, i had to hit the highest notes in the class, but it worked somehow. and resonance is a big thing, too, for lower notes you'll resonate more in your chest, and for higher notes, you'll resonate in your head/nasal cavities.
good luck! :D

and on finding your personal voice... here's how i did it before i took classes.
i sang with everything, and sort of copied the voices of the singers i was listening to and singing. once i found something that felt comfortable to me (at the time, evanescence), i continued to strengthen myself with that style, and then i moved on to nightwish, which is more opera sounding, but also more my style. if that helps any. (:

You never said you agreed with me you just copied what I said, at least to my eyes. Anyway, bye

Traveling Merman: It seems that you have taken something in offense when there was no offense meant at all. I think that she didn't realize that she was basically saying the same thing at the time. And personally, I don't think that you said the same thing. I mean, you said the same thing, but not in the same words. Now lets stop this argument and have a nice big bowl of popcorn together, shall we?

I think its really good, sure there are some parts where you can tell theres a bit of nerves taking over but if you really practice a bit more or as Mermaid Danielle suggested, singing lessons to help. you will "blow us out of the water" with your voice, its your weapon, it tells a story and makes emotions stir.

You do have a pretty, clear voice, so I think you should definitely keep practicing. You are your own best (and worst) critic, and everything that implies.
