This is my first thread, so I apologize for any crappiness in it. *blushes* I absolutely adore the whole mermaid and fantasy thing, but it's going to take ages for me to save up to get a decent tail, with rent and food and bills and all, I can't see me getting a tail for another two or three years. (Had thought of giving up on the whole mermaid dream but I've always given up on things and I don't want to keep that going....) xP But, I do want to be involved somehow and looking through my stuff, I noticed that over the past few years, I had collected quite a bit of elven accessories. So a random thought that I had, since I can't do an actual tail for a good while, what if I had some help putting together a shoot or something that would involve both an elf and a mermaid? Get more fantasy in it? I dunno, just a thought. :$

I don't see why not. I think its a great idea. Just make sure that it is the kind of thing that tells a story. As to why the elf and mermaid would be interacting. Elves, by nature, think pretty highly of themselves and might not be keen on mermaids. People don't realize it, but elves (in average lore) tend to be a little racist and might see the mermaid as below them. I do think its a marvelous idea and a great way to tell a story with the pictures. Go for it!

I think it's fine, I know a few mermaids who would definitely be willing to do the shoot.

Another idea to get involved: see if there's a local mermaid who is looking for an assistant. I know I could always use a pair of hands when I'm in tail. Elf garb would work perfectly if you two are going to a Ren Faire or to present yourself (the usual for an assistant is a pirate, I think, but I don't see why an elf wouldn't work). That way you get the experience with mermaiding without actually having a tail.

*checks your pod* HOLY CARP! You're in Rocky Mountain pod? PM me!

I agree that tails can be expensive. But there are quite a few that look nice and aren't too pricey. And if you're creatively inclined you could make your own fabric tail. It doesn't cost much at all to do it that way, depending on how far you go with details that is. Lol
Have fun either way! This is the place to be for any help making one for sure ;)

Maybe the elf was seduced. lol not in a sexual way, but like a girl attracted to a diamond. Maybe mermaids are an elf's best friend. Hahaha my jokes are so much more stupid in the morning xD

Its apparent that you all need to play more Dungeons and Dragons. Sea Elves are one of the major elf species and interact frequently with merfolk.

OMG! I Love the idea of elves and mermaids! I've been thinking about it a lot myself, as well! I am both mermaid and elf at heart! Good luck with everything! It should make for an interesting experience!

I totally agree. A lot of people don't realize how inexpensive basic tails are. You can get a wave monofin for under $60, and Macro has neoprene on clearance that's under $20 for one tails worth. If you have a friend with a sewing machine or if you buy one from Walmart and return it when you're done, you can make a pretty nice neoprene tail for well under a hundred bucks. I think spandex and neoprene tails are totally under appreciated. Not only are they more affordable than silicone tails (by a factor of 10), but silicone tails are heavier and have more drag. For your first tail you'd probably be better off with something simple anyway.

Not to bash the elf idea- that sounds cool. I'm just saying that if you want to swim as a mermaid, that's probably more feasible than you think.

This is so true! You can make yourself a fabric tail for fairly cheap! I bought my main fabric for $12 at WallMart. If you have a Joann fabric join the mailing list a get cupons. Check your local thrift stores for flippers you can modify into a monofin, I got my pair for $2. They have a tutorial here on how to modify them. Sewing is easy, and you can save up for your dream tail, while getting to go mermaiding!

I'd have to look up the prices for the neoprene and such, but I don't have a sewing machine and haven't really made any friends out here yet. But can a regular sewing machine work with neoprene? I'm not very good when it comes to sewing but I do have the flaw of being a perfectionist, if I see that it might not end up how realistic I want it to be, I tend to quit. I know, bad habit.
I don't want to do the elf and mermaid idea just because I don't think I'll be able to get a good tail for a while, but to add a little something else to it, more fantasy. I dunno, I guess when it all comes down to it, I just want to step out of the box and try something new.

You could say you're a nymph. Nymphs and mermaids are both water spirits in Greek/Roman
mythology and nymphs always appear to be very human.

Btw really cute icon xD

Hi Millie,

You could have a look at this thread about sewing neoprene

I think involving an elf in your stuff wouldn't be a terrible long shot because alot of us do other fantasy creature in addition to merfolk. I myself spend alot of time as a fairy :)

i was going to say, i thought elves looked down on humans because they weren't as magical/attuned with nature? so merfolk wouldn't be looked down upon.

I love this question! My best friend and I have actually been talking about doing this exact same thing. He is obssessed with elves just as much as I am with mers and he has an elf persona as well. We have even gone as far as to start looking for some some photoshoot locations and have some amazing lagoon looking shots with low hanging trees with rocks in the water. I love the concept and hope you find some local mer to help you with this shoot. I personally feel that elves would consider merfolk as their underwater equals and would probobly work closely with eachother.

I've been drawing mermaids as if they are part of the elven family. They are pretty similar in appearance aside then that they have tails. I've also had a few aquatic elves, but noone really liked them, so I went back to my elves and mermaids. I've never really drawn them together, but I'm writing a story about them... though I'm pretty slow with my story progression atm.

I like this idea !!! In Dragonlance by example, there are sea elves and merfolk. We can imagine elves and merfolk having children together. I have a mermaid tail and elf ears to make an elven mermaid.
