View Full Version : Tips on Making a Pixie Cut More Mermaidlike?

I have a cute little pixie cut that I adore- think Anne Hathaway's new do after Dark Knight Rises/for Les Mis.
However, I really feel that long, flowing hair is a beautiful, classic mermaid look.
Either way, my hair ain't growing waist length anytime soon.

Anyone have tips on making short hair look cuter or more aquatic?

I found this really pretty headdress (http://www.etsy.com/listing/100786199/neptunes-daughter-headdress?ref=v1_other_1), but I don't know how well bobby pins would hold it down while swimming.
Meanwhile, this gorgeous clip (http://www.etsy.com/listing/118689467/triple-starfish-mermaid-barrette?ref=v1_other_1) is begging for me to wear it, but I don't know that I have enough hair for it.

I'd love to even do some hair coloring, but chalks seem like they'd wash off in water, and I don't have the inclination for any blue in my hair while I'm looking for a job. :(

HELP. </3

Raina has really cute short hair, and a great mermaid-like explanation, but she could tell you all about it better than I can :)

What about one of those headbands that go around the head horizontally? You could add plants or shells or ribbons and make the back adjustable so it fits your head specifically. There's also lots of fun inspiration from the 1920s when short hair was the style.

I have to admit Raina's hair and how pretty she is are like my one big mer-comfort, haha.

Exactly! Thanks for all the great pics, Photine. I just get SO scared of pretty headdresses falling out while swimming, although that second art deco-styled one would be beautiful for a photoshoot. :)

I have a hair extension that is fishing line with pearls on it attached to an alligator clip. You could do the same with pearls or small shells.

You might also look at a hair piece tutorial that Mermaid Raven put together. It shows how she keeps her hairpieces in no matter how much swimming she does. The same trick might work for you too.

i feel like the problem with long hair is clips and such get tangled too easily, so you could really have fun with decorative clips and such. if you use tiny rubber hair bands to hold sections together, you could do some awesome stuff with hair clips.

Dude honestly I think mermaids would chop their hair short anyway. It'd be way less of a hassle in the water not to have three feet of hair get snagged in rocks and shit

I like the headdress idea better than the headband idea. And I think mermaids with short hair could definitely pull it off. The explanation Lake Erie Loner posted could be tweaked if little kids inquire about it. Also, if you've ever watched the Lonely Island music video for "I'm on a boat!" the mermaid there has short hair too, and looks great.

My hair is growing out now, but I've always worn head dresses, facinators, head bands etc, and really big earrings!

I am growing my hair out too... soon to be bra strap length I hope. But I dont like this length to be a mermaid. I personally want mine to grow out to tail bone length
