This afternoon, I went to my gym to swim in one of the pools. I found out that one of them (with the water slide and the wading pool) was hosting a child's birthday party, another (the lap pool) was apparently part of some triathlon training event, and that just left the fairly crowded "therapy" pool, where a number of people of all ages were swimming (it is also the warmest of the pools, though, so that is nice). As I entered the water, I realized that a father was holding a young girl steady on a submerged kickboard... and that the girl (I would estimate that she was a very young teenager, maybe younger) had a bright blue fabric fish tail!
I nearly had to pinch myself and take a second look to make sure I wasn't imagining it, but there she was. I swam over to the family and started talking with them, telling them that it was so cool to see another mer in the area. Apparently they hadn't heard about the mernetwork, but were familiar with the mertailor, weeki wachee, etc. When asked if I had a tail I admitted that I'm still saving up for one, but they seemed really nice about it. When she had to leave, the girl also admitted to not wanting to ruin the experience for the kids, so I kinda stood between view of her and the rest of the pool while her father stood by to pick up and hide her tail when she slipped out of it. I did not get her name, but hopefully I'll see her soon, or see her on here soon.
Have you guys run across random mermaids or mermen in unexpected places?

I can't remember the last time I actually saw someone dressed as a mermaid. I think it either happened once when I was really little or something or I've just never seen one in person. Weird because I live in Florida so you think people would do that a lot.
But literally everytime I go to public pools were little kids will come up to you and make you play around with them and almost 90% of all little girls pretend they're mermaids, so if parents probably knew how to make tails or where to get them, I'm sure I'd be seeing a lot more little kids in mermaid tails around my area. Or if the kids knew about them they'd probably nag their parents more to get one xD
And aww thats nice that you helped veil her so it was still fun and real for the kids. I imagine that's the hardest part about wearing a tail around is when you're getting out of it to not spoil it for anyone. I assume getting it on may be hard but not as bad since no one will be paying much attention to you before you have a tail on.

I was at the gym earlier today and a small <1 year old girl was with her daughter in the waiting area behind the glass that looks right at the pool. they saw me and I waved my tail and showed off for a while as the little girl just stared at me with her hands pressed against the glass. it was so cute! but no, I've never run into another person in tail, but I ran into a mer inthusiest at a craft store a few towns over.

Shortly after I got my fabric tail last year, I found out that one of my friends had a tail too. She had moved away two years before, though. There's also a girl in the neighborhood where one of my other friends lives that has a tail.

Last summer, when I was in Galveston, I ended up talking to some children about my tail in the hotel pool. Since there was no way for me to get out of the tail without them seeing me, I had to tell them it wasn't real, but it didn't disappoint them at all. They were all fascinated, it was so cute. One little girl in particular was so inspired by it she started begging her mom for a tail on the spot! So I agree with this theory. Haha

That is almost like what happened to me this past summer. I was swimming in our local pool with my tail on an when I got to the shallow end the kids just swamped me with all types of questions an what not. But after a bit of swimming in the summer there was a young girl about 10 or 11 she had a tail as well swimming in the pool. Her mother knew about Mermagica where I got my tail from but she didn't know about our website. It is great to see other people or children swim in a tail. A pleasent surprise.

The first time I went swimming in my tail in Lake Michigan, I met this one girl who came up to me and told me she loved mermaids. She was about 14, I then spent the next hour giving "mermaid" lessons. It was so great. :D
