I have two dogs- a black lab and a German shorthair. Love them both so much- but they aren't the brightest..... for example, last week, my lab got a little cut on the end of her tail. So, she chewed it off. Yeah. I know all animals lick their wounds, but I've never had one actually lop off a body part. It was pretty horrifying at first, because I came home from work and there was blood all over the place- splashed on the walls, puddled on the floor ... My husband and I couldn't figure out what had happened- he had been there with the girls all night..... then Shelby walked by me and splashed blood all over me. We grabbed her and I put on a pressure bandage and called the vet. She said to keep it wrapped and come in if it hadn't stopped bleeding in a couple days. (since long tailed dogs tend to bang their happy ends into things, she said it could take a few days for it to totally stop bleeding
, which it did) Still, I had no idea what had happened to her and my husband was just as baffled. Finally after about three full days, the bleeding slowed to an ooze and I looked at it while changing bandages. It looked like she ad just kind of shaved off the skin on one side of the very tip. So I packed her up with more bacitracin and wrapped her up and la-tee-da. Then, about an hour later, I let the pups out to play in the fresh snow... and saw a tuft of black fur.... I picked it up... it was the last 3/4 inch of her tail. Bone and all. I felt rather sick- called the vet again.... she kind of laughed and said "well, has the bleeding stopped? Does she seem to be in pain? Because if it's clotted off and she's not messing with it or acting like she's really uncomfortable, she will be just fine. Just keep it clean and wrapped and call me if she gets a fever or is in pain,"
So, it's been 9 days now, and I'm happy to report she's healing really well. She looks a bit silly with a hot-pink tail wrap tho. Silly pup.

What in the jesus?
Maybe her tail WAS bothering her? Like you said for pain usually animals will try to dislocate the area but I mean if it was just a cut how bad could it have POSSIBLY hurt that she'd want to freaking eat her tail off?
That sounds like a rare case

I had a pitt who seemed horrified by his tail and dewclaws. He chewed off most of his dewclaws and constantly munched on his tail. It was so bad the vet actually insisted we take the whole thing off to avoid infection since it was a constantly seeping wound. Any attempt to bandage was thrwarted and so after a few months we got his tail completely removed and what was left of his dewclaws too. He was much happier afterwards and the house looked less like a murder scene. I could never wear light colors around him until after his tail was gone. O.o

Holyyyyy....

My friend's dog did that! She was rather unclean with her animal and her dog was infested with fleas for a long time. Eventually he just chewed off a chunk of his tail because he was itching so bad. It was horribly sad...

yeah.... my dogs are fat and happy and clean.... but Shibbs has always had a thing about licking her tail, and since the end came off not so much... which leads me to believe maybe she had some weird nerve damage that caused all the fussing-over. At any rate, she is healing really really well. silly pup.

... And I thought my dog chewing her butt raw was bad. I'm SO glad I never found her actually chewing off pieces like that or I'd of probably died in panic! She had a skin condition, so she was always bleeding somewhere from biting herself.

God... If I had come home to blood splattered everywhere, I probably would have fainted in horror. Kudos to you for taking it so well!
My pup has always had a thing for "eating" her paws. She doesn't have a hard bite cause she's a toy poodle, but still. We catch her doing it and try to distract her instead. Maybe her paws are just itchy? Gosh, but if she had ACTUALLY chewed her paws off...
I'm glad your dogs ok now. If I had found a chunk of a tail in my backyard, well... Let's just say that it wouldn't have been pretty.
