I would really like to write a story based on/a retelling of a fairytale/classic story, but I can't figure out which one to do. All of the ones I've thought of so far have already been messed with so many times (Alice in Wonderland especially), so I was wondering what you guys thought.
So, what's your favorite fairytale(or classic like Dracula) that you would want to see redone?

Oh I love doing this :) I did that for the Little Mermaid for a contest on Mibba (I'd link it but I doubt many of you are on mibba). Hm I love the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson. And who says you still can't retell some of the more common ones? :D
There were some of these books that I read as a child. The emporers new clothes ...snow white and the seven rock stars and stuff like that :P lots of fun

Hmm... you know, the Bremen-Town Musicians would be fun to see a modern version, maybe as some sort of band with animal characteristics and similarities to the characters' backstories, uncovering a gang hideout and spooking them with the appearance of witches and demons would be interesting.
A new version of the Last Unicorn would be nice, also.
Personally, though I have seen different modern versions in literature of this, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a cinematic version of the myth of Cupid and Psyche. It has all the best elements of a good story...
1. Innocent but strong heroine.
2. Fallen but redeemed heroine.
3. Winged guys.
4. Possibly winged girls (Psyche is often depicted with butterfly wings, particularly after her Apotheosis)
5. Vengeful goddesses
6. Talking animals (and towers... and rivers...)
7. Romantic storyline
8. Cute guys.
9. Apotheosis
10. Journey to the Underworld
11. Wicked Sisters
12. Prophecies
13. Happy Ever After

I'd love to see the following:
The ugly duckling
swan lake
Faust (not really a fairy tale but it's a good story!)
Princess and the pea
the red dancing shoes (I forget the name of this)
The fishermans wife (I think this one was the Selkie or mermaids cap story )
Or maybe a retelling of any ningyo or Chinese mermaid story?

Why not retell a historical story as a fairy tale? Like Anne Boleyn and how she created and sparked the Church of England? Change the whole thing into allegory and change their names?
Or you could do the forgotten prince? queen vic's grandchild, prone to fits and seizures, and what never known to the public and hidden away.
Or the two boy princes locked in the Tower of London by their uncle, who then killed them supposedly. (Tho their remains were never found!)

Wow, lots of good suggestions!
Traveling Merman, I like that idea I've always loved history.
