So I finally started putting the sequins on my tail last week while I was laying in bed sick. Didn't get very far before I fell asleep, but so far I think it is going to look pretty awesome!
10391
Also, I officially ordered my FIRST silicone tail (planning on having several). I'm buying my tail from Kanti And so far the details are looking awesome! Once we finalize an official design, I'll probably post it. It's going to look very deep sea predator type tail, which I'm excited about :)

Hehe
Looking really cool!
I think the sequins will definitely add an awesome 3D effect and make the tail look more detailed! How are you inserting them btw? Are you hand-sewing each one?? O_O
As for the other thing heheh yay! I have a feeling it's going to be a really cool tail xD

OOOH those are lovely! I wonder if sequins can be an add-on to your sale tails at a later time? I can't imagine it's very easy to sew them or... however you're attaching them! Kudos to all the tail makers out there, seriously. *can't make anything in 3D to save her life*

Kanti- I've actually got thread that I bought to match each of my different sequins. And yes, I'm hand sewing them on. I think just that many took me 30-45 min. And the tail is absolutely going to be amazing :D I can already see it and I don't even have it yet!
Angel- Thank you ^_^ Not the whole tail is going to be gold, It's actually going to end up being kind of like a gothic rainbow tail... Kind of
Octavia- I would absolutely love to do that, but sequin tails are SOOO labor intensive that a tail with these kinds of sequins would cost a fortune, not to mention a long wait time

Do sewing the sequins on make your fingers really sore? Also, do t try make some kind of sequin applicator or something? I saw it somewhere but I can't remember where. It uses prices of metal I think to attach sequins onto things.

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping to be able to bust my ass ('scuse the french) on it because I want/need it done by mid July. I think I should be able to have it done by then. The fluke is just taking so long because it's tedious work. Narrow area and such, plus the fact it doesn't lay flat.
Dragger- I'll have to look into it. Would definitely make the work so much easier if I had something like that

omgosh. More progress to show. Ended up home from work today cause a stupid idiot at work got me sick last week -.-
Anywho, heres how far I got before ADOS kicked in and I got distracted by video games-
10468
And here's with it laid out flat-
10469
Almost finished with the one side. Once I get the other done, then it's time to work my way up. I'd do the tail fully covered in sequins, but I see it being done by so many people that I wanted to do something different. Plus, I like to think of a mermaid tail like a fish tail, and fish don't have scales on their tail fins :p

Urg too mad it takes so long ):
Morticia Mermaid
04-03-2013, 11:41 AM
Actually, not as long as you might think. I've got about 3 hours work right there, and I think close to 50 sequins. I know it's going a lot faster than I thought it was going to take
Morticia Mermaid
04-03-2013, 11:47 AM
And both my tails are going to look pretty bad ass. The fluke design you drew up looks fantastic Kanti. Can't wait to see what you come up with for paint design :D

04-03-2013, 12:15 PM
Hey that's not too bad then! I honestly love how it's coming out! I like that you got shells too rather than the regular round sequins. Not that I don't like those, I just think these give for a whole new look and it looks cool!
And yea I attempted a couple but urg Im so bad at colors -__- I'll try to get it something for you out today!

04-03-2013, 12:47 PM
^_^ It's all good Kanti, take your time. We've got plenty of time until it'll be needed.

Morticia Mermaid
04-03-2013, 01:06 PM
I MIGHT, but if I do it will probably be rather expensive and will take a long while. And, I'd only take 1 at a time. I think I've got a picture somewhere of an example of how the waist is going to look. I'll see if I can find it
Kanti
04-03-2013, 01:18 PM
Yea, don't take too many of these, they're really hard to do imo. Well, very tedious. But if you did it'd be awesome! I think sequin tails are really expensive o.O
Morticia Mermaid
04-03-2013, 01:23 PM
Yeah, whoever bought would be looking between $2,000-3,000... Mainly cause of the amount of work that has to go into it
Kanti
04-03-2013, 01:26 PM
I think that price is more than fair. You're probably going to spend hours upon hours working on them
Morticia Mermaid
04-03-2013, 01:40 PM
I think that price is more than fair. You're probably going to spend hours upon hours working on them
Exactly. If I'm going to put that much effort and work, and potentially blood from stabbing myself with a needle, I'm going to charge what I feel it's worth to charge

04-03-2013, 01:55 PM
Haha don't forget the backpaint of being hunched over for so long! Urg at least I know I'm feeling that with my scale sheet -__-
Morticia Mermaid
04-03-2013, 01:59 PM
Haha. Yeah. I know your pain too. I started a scale sheet last fall, just to play with and kind of get an idea of the extent that is needed to go to for silicone tails
It is looking so freaking good! I love the colors and patterns on the tail :D Lol gothic rainbow, never heard that one before, but I like where it is going ;)

Lol. Really? Funny you say that, I was the one that the cheerleaders in my highschool were afraid of... Not to mention all the guys, the jocks, the wrestlers... Pretty much everyone ^^' I'm a total goth at heart, and wore it a LOT in school, plus I have a rather sadistic sense of humor >:) I'll see about a full tail picture once I get a chance to add more sequins onto it. I have a picture of it fully painted, just doesn't have any sequins on it at that point

04-10-2013, 01:13 PM
are you gluing or sewing the sequins? Either way good luck. All you mers who try to tackle those teeny tiny sequins. I don't know how you do it XD I get intimidated even by the bigger sequins.
Morticia Mermaid
04-10-2013, 01:16 PM
I'm actually sewing them. I found it's rather easy to use a pair of pliers to punch the needle through the center (helps hold them in the right position) for those sequins that have a hole at top and a hole at bottom. I think I've got 6-8 inches sew on right now, which took roughly 3 hours for me
I'm hoping to sit down and do some more work on it this week, want it finished for the fair in July.

Wow. Hey, thanks for reviving this thread. I've been working, slowly, on a new sequin tail as I had to toss aside the last one because I had to change monofin.
And yep, I knew you could see the big ones, but the little ones see easier to hand sewn because they are so small.
Anyway, new tail is pink, blue, green, red, and purple (I think that's ask the colors). Here's progress so far-

oh very awsome itll look great ! what did you use to paint the tail?
Morticia Mermaid
06-28-2014, 01:02 AM
Thanks! I only painted a bit to see how the sequins look over black instead of white. I prefer them over white, do I'm not going to paint anymore.
More progress tonight. It's actually going pretty quickly now
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/28/egatesen.jpg
And yes that is an embroidery ring. I'm borrowing it from Miyu until I can get my own. It has been a MAJOR help in sewing on the sequins

I ment like what kind of paint ? Acrylic?
Morticia Mermaid
06-28-2014, 02:21 PM
Nope. I actually use automotive paints. They are kind of expensive, so partially glad the scales look better over white

I order them online, use them to paint tail orders (so would rather not say specifically from where). They stay on great in the water.
More progress on the sequin tail. I cannot express fully how much easier this embroidery ring is making sewing these on. Going to see about getting my own to use

I've not had any issues with it denting. Cool thing about neoprene, even if it dents just lay it flat for a while and it will flatten back out

Some good news- as long as you do it carefully and don't tighten it too much, the ring will go over the sequins just fine without bending or denting the hell out of them (at least it didn't for me)

Cool, Morticia! Can't wait to see that tail when it's all finished! Also, if you have a Joann's or Michael's near you, you can probably pick up a hoop that is fairly inexpensive. The smaller ones are usually under $10, and you can check for coupons online, too! 40% off my few yards of fabric (at @ $17 a yard) was pretty great and saved me a ton of money! :D

Well, I am deciding to play mad scientist. I have an awesome idea I want to try for a sheer fluke that will make it REALLY unique, and to do that the fluke had to come off :P
