Hey guys! So, my Mom gave me this ancient old blender to use, but when I plugged it in, nothing happened. Poor thing finally died. I was gonna toss it, but the glass pitcher is so beautiful I couldn't do it. I was going to make it into a planter, but instead I decided to make a little Beta house. Check it out!

Take an old blender, cut out the cord, pick out some deco, seal the bottom with silicone, let dry! I'll post the final product when it's done tomorrow~
*some people drill a hole in the bottom of the pitcher and put in an air stone, but the base plate of my pitcher is metal. SO, I'm gonna thread the air stone down fron the top. Ta-da!

That is so creative! I love fish tanks like this! I'm such a sucker for filters though. Makes life so easy. But hey that thing looks SUPER easy to clean.

Oh man, this is brilliant! I have a feeling that when I have my own house, I'm going to be a crazy fish lady. :)

can we see the finished product? such a freaking cool idea. I actually look at old glass things all the time and imagine them as aquariums ^.^

Hey thanks everyone!
I'll be finishing it up today- just testing for water-tightness (or whatever word is right there lol) and then I gotta go get a fishy :) My two school-age kids are home with me today (one with bad tonsils, one with pink eye- ICK) so we're gonna go to Wally-world later and get the fish. I will post pics when we get done! :)

Love this. So creative!

Did you do anything to the blades? Curiosity...

Looking forward to the finish picture...

yeah the blades lol
I bent them back, and they'll be buried in gravel :)

AWESOME! I was wondering how you dealt with that... I would have nightmares about my fish screwering themselves... :(

So excited to see it when it is finished...

I got carried away and ripped the guts out of the blender so I could put in an air stone. I should be done by Monday- I'll keep you updated!

hot-glued the back of the buttons so they wouldn't fall out (sorry for the blurry pic)

10730
10731

hot-glued a piece of an old towel to the bottom of the base plate so the pump isn't loud as all get out,

10732

placed the pump inside, put it all together, filled her up- YAY!

Love this! This is incredibly creative and cute! Though it does make me think of Deuce Biggalo male Jiggalo where he has all the fish in odd impromptu tanks, including the lionfish in the blender.

This might seem a silly question, but I know nothing about fish - Does it matter what colour your aquarium lighting is?
If not, I have some ideas for those buttons that are now useless ;)

@ scapey- I think fish prefer blue or white light. I am not the authority tho. The buttons are now hot glued into the frame, they cannot move at all.

Cool idea, too bad you can't get a bigger blender pitcher, jug, thingy. Seems small for the betta...

It is a bit too small for a betta, but it looks like you still made a lovely home out of the space. :3

I hate to be the party pooper but this is correct. It's too small, 2.5 gallons is the smallest a betta should be in and where is the filter and heater? You need both for a betta to be happy and healthy.

While it is a cool idea, I think you should get a proper tank, filter and heater for the little guy and use it as a planter.

I actually did some research on this- the pitcher is a little small for him, I do plan on moving him to a bigger house and giving this to a different critter. But after all the work I put in, Im not filling it with dirt. As for the heater and filter, the tank has an air stone, but it really upsets him when it's on- they prefer water that's more still. and the heater? Dude he'd cook in there! I have him in the kitchen where the temp is stable.
I'll add that over the years I've had tons of Betas and they've all been healthy and beautiful- I take good care of my critters, fins or not :)
PS- I took the plant out. That made a TON more room :)

That is why I suggested an actual tank for him, the heater would be a bad idea in that.
They have filters with a slower flow for bettas. I'm glad you are gonna get him a bigger home. :)

I think a small live plant that does not need much light, like a mini anubias or a few moss ball with a nerite snail in it would be awesome. The plant would be a natural filter and the normal room light would be enough for low light plants. I think the snail would look cool in the blender.

Funny you should mention the moss ball- that's exactly what I was gonna put in there! He's gonna have to hang in there for a couple more days till the weather permits travel to PetsMart. Then I'm picking up a snail and plants and figuring out where I'm gonna put Po. (My girls named him lol) I'll post some pics when everyone relocates!
