There is a copycat company that has recreated finfolk designs. I think they're located in France? They're etsy based. I'll see if I can dig up the shop.
But yeah, they make obvious finfolk duplicates.

Regarding the double heel fins, did you guys know my tail was actually the first to have those, three years ago? Mine are slightly different than the ones they're doing now, which I appreciate, because it means mine are still unique :) The new ones they're doing are a bit larger. But I love mine, I think they hide my heels extremely well, better than most other heel fins I've ever seen, actually. I'm sure I've posted this video before (I don't have many swimming videos because I personally suck at making them), but this video by Lovely Lorelei shows how they look while I'm swimming:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNO4xKdpu4w
I'd definitely love to see how the new style looks in the water, though!
Also....those copycats seriously piss me off. Come up with your own freaking ideas, people!!

That copying is insane. With the fact that it's direct copying from a photo of the tail wouldn't at least the copyright on the photo itself be enough to do something about this?

It's official, Finfolk does some of the best heel fins! The placement, the way they move in the water... really hides those feet!
Does anyone know if there are action shots (or hopefully underwater video!) of the amazing yellow-purple-pink starry galaxy tail they did not too long ago? It had mini flukes on the fluke..? Would love to know how they look in the water. If someone could direct me toward the owner of that tail I'll be happy to do my own stalking, er, RESEARCH!

Isn't the Starry Night Tail one that Fifi made, based on the Van Gogh? It was an art piece, if I remember, and was actually made in Australia. Did Finfolk do a Starry Night tail?

For those who have their tails, do you recommend the tail end at your waistline or maybe lower at the hip area? Pros and cons? The waistline/belly button area looks most popular. I think I saw somewhere someone had theirs at the waist but cut to a V-style in the front so when they sit upright, it won't ride up to your chest but idk how swimming with that style would be. Thoughts?

I HIGHLY suggest going up to the waist. If you want it shorter, you can carefully trim back a few scales at a time, but you can't add scales if your tail is too short! Also, if you're in a hurry and can't get your tail all the way up, having a higher waist means you won't be showing off your bum.

I'm going to agree with the "leave it longer" crowd. I tried to get it to stop on my hips, and ended up getting the measurements wrong. First time I tried my tail on, I had the whole "plumber's crack" thing going on. The Twin's were super awesome about everything, but it was expensive to get it sent back and forth. Easier/safer to leave some extra space, and cut to fit once you've put it on a few times.

Thanks Lorelei, PearlieMae, and Marlin for your feedback!!! That helps a lot! I will go for the high waisted style. I hope I don't mess up the measurement because I want it to fit like a glove!!!

I've been meaning to post my review for like almost a year haha! I put my review up on my blog, along with pics that show the original design, then the stages in the tail being painted, and then the finished product: http://www.mermaidandink.com/blog/mermaid-tail-by-finfolk-productions-a-review
My tail (now known as The Duchess on account of how she's so high maintenance) was one of the earlier rounded-scale tails, painted in autumn purple/green/gold colours. I got her last July, having waited about 15 months in the end I think. The wait was a bit frustrating of course, but it did mean that I had the chance to get the rounded scale design which they created in the meantime, as well as a top. Overall I gave Finfolk 4.5 stars for the whole experience.

The only underwater footage I have of her is from performing in an aquarium last summer (you can see me meeting this cute guitar shark who totally surprised me by coming out of nowhere!). It was just taken from a camera on the walkway in the aquarium so you can't really appreciate the colours alas:

This might sound stupid, but I almost cried seeing that tail. My dream tail will definitely be peacock inspired since I breed peacocks and I am the magazine editor for an association's peacock magazine, and that design is a bit like what I have had in mind - much more so than other peacock inspired tails I have seen. That is one lucky mer who is getting that tail...WOW!!!
Seeing Finfolk do such a wonderful job on a peacock tail like this makes it even harder for me to decide what tailmaker I will go with in the future!

I don't think it would look very good on me but I could see this looking stellar on a black mermaid. I mean, am I right? Haha don't you think that purple would just pop so nicely?
I hope whoever gets it is super happy with it. look at all the work that went into that! true artistry!

Oh my gods, that peacock tail!! it's so amazing, and it's making me so excited about my own future Finfolk tail. I'm loving the spotted pattern on the body, too.
That bright color might actually do the opposite on the owner's light complexion :)
I'm pretty fair skinned, and when I wear super bright colors such as that lime green, or neon colors, it makes my skin tone seem warmer or richer (for lack of a better term). Especially if I've gotten *any sun* at all. It's the super dark or 'dusty' shades (like sage green/mauve/grey-blues) that tend to wash out lighter skin tones. The blah shades with no pop.
Maybe it's why super neon swimsuits were all the rage in the 80s; they made the wearer seem all the more tanned.

Got my new FinFolk tail last week, picked it up in person.
From deposit to pickup, 1 year 7 months. Mid Feb 2015 to Mid Sept 2016.
Production month was Feb 2016.
Take into account the twins had a lot of events in their lives so hopefully I weathered the worst delays and the production times will start to shrink to a more reasonable amount of time. My tail has individual scales, that's a big time sink.
Its a journey, pack a lot of patience. "Good things come to those who wait".

My production month was August. I was waiting to see the new calypso fluke design before I made my final decision on which one fluke I wanted (I chose the new calypso!!) the tail has not been made yet but to be fair on them, I submitted my measurements mid August which, in my eyes, was late and totally my bad. The girls probably have all sorts of projects to do including mine and they know they are a bit behind schedule with my tail. I don't want to rush them but I do hope I get it maybe by the end of the year! I'm just awaiting design/paint mock-ups!

If you sent a "READY TO ORDER" email, then its just a waiting game afterwards. I waited about two weeks before I resent the email and I got a response the next day. Sometimes they respond quickly, sometimes they don't; it just depends if you have good timing. But they are super busy, so waiting game.

I wasn't too sure on posting that drama bit, but sadly it did. Although I haven't seen any more tails from them.
I remember thinking it was a kid's tail.
The fluke design is not available except to the ultra secret topic (Arion I think asked about it's availability in the comments section). That'd be cool if they had a cheaper line like Mernation but with just the two of them that's a heavy workload on top of an already heavy workload.
At least they'll announce within the next twenty-four hours though right?

It looks like Mer Coralia and other mers were right about them making a more affordable line for everyone who has dreamed of being a mermaid. I looked back at that first photo they posted months ago of the special fin and Merman Arion asked about its availability. They answered with "This fluke is currently exclusive to the superamazingtopsecret project!"
I did a comparison photo and it looks just like the 4th tail! They are a match!

Wah. I hate this waiting game.
I knew about the flukes and fins being silicone but the main body isn't, right? Least we're getting answers sometime this week.
Whatever they've done, it's hopefully easier than the "normal" process of their full silicone tails. Easier on them, I mean. That was my first thought after seeing the price.

Do any Finfolk tails have a metallic/pearlescent shine in and out of the water? I noticed that the gold they use seems to have a metallic shine, but I was wondering about a full tail (not all gold) that they have created that has a lot of shine? I saw a 2013 Finfolk tail in person and it had a very slight shine when viewed in direct sunlight but I am talking about something really shiny (but not glittery). I think this tail they made might come closest to what I am thinking of: https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t31.0-8/p843x403/10443148_330819623748649_1899279520531071776_o.jpg
I wonder if they would make your tail more metallic/pearl if you asked?

I assume they got busy with other projects which I guessed correctly after the reveal of the new affordable tails and their trip to Mexico! Hopefully they'll get back orders soon! Thanks for the update on your side Badkidbebe. I started to get worried when they replied my FB comment that they were looking at Basecamp the past few days but could have missed mine and would get back to me tt day when I commented but have yet to hear from them. I hope they start focusing on us once the website is relaunched. I too am SO ready to swim in my FF tail!! Waiting is no fun haha!

So, the new tails have a neoprene base with resin sequins modeled after their own scales! It's like one of Hannah's tails. I'm really excited about them. I'm not quite ready to preorder one, but my birthday is in the summer, so I think I know what to ask for! :D

For the Mythic line they're using the shooter and saying they've used it in their full silicone tails before. Does anyone know if they have done any previous tails with the shooter? I thought it was just the trainer and competitor?

Hey all just a FYI in case anyone missed it and is considering buying a Mythic tail - the prices currently offered for these tails ($699) is a presale special only and will be going up to thier regular price of $799 soon. So if you want to get it at the lower price you need to order soon!
Here is the Facebook comment from Fin folk that confirms this.
"Once presale is over, regular prices will be $799 for the non-finned tail, and $1050 for the finned tail. Once these tails are in stock they will be available for SAME DAY or next day shipping"

Yeah this is a rare chance!
For those of you really wanting this tail but you don't have the money saved up yet you could still probably make a bunch of crafts and sell them to help raise some money. Or babysit, petsit, do yard work for someone (my fave thing cause I don't like inside chores) etc. Around now is when people will be starting to think about buying presents for Christmas and they might be more likely to buy something handmade - or at least I like handmade items more since it is more unique and less likely the person has that item.

Also you can always ask your friends and relatives to give you money for your tail fund instead of a Xmas present, and you will have the amount you need in no time!

I work with this mer as well as own a Finfolk with quite a bit of gold on it! Neither of the tails are inherently shiny when dry, so we oft mist our tails with water throughout a shift to keep the sparkles looking top notch.

That is very neat that you mist your tails to keep them sparkling. I am sure it also helps ad to the 'real mermaid' aspect since it looks like you are trying to keep from drying out.

There's a few threads with this question, but the big one is what and where you plan on using your tail the most.
Here's a Competitor pros and cons thread: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?14134-Competitor-monofin-pros-and-cons&highlight=competitor+trainer
Here's the Official Monofins Thread: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2909-MONOFINS-THE-OFFICIAL-THREAD&highlight=competitor+trainer
Funny, I thought there was more on this... it might just be in random threads where it's discussed briefly.
I've talked to a few Finfolk mers who have both. You either love or hate the competitor; not sure about the trainer.
Trainer is more flowy and gives more agility underwater. Easier to travel with.
Competitor gives more power as its stiffer. Harder to travel with. Good with oceans (Though I've some say the trainer is also good; idk about their rip currents though.) The competitor is also heavier.
I also found this:
"The Competitor Monofin is perhaps the most similar to the original design, which is also arguably the most successful. The broad fiberglass blade remains rigid in the water, adding large amounts of resistance, force, and therefore, speed to your swimming. This is also the most popular choice of the FINIS Mermaids, Hannah and Kariel, who have become experts on the fin.
The Trainer 1, Trainer 2, and Shooter Monofins (http://finisinc.createsend1.com/t/r-l-povil-jhutlhkydd-u/) are hybrid fins, that are made from the same carbon material but are slightly smaller in size to allow for greater manuverability in the water. Those who are new to life underwater may consider this fin over the Competitor due to the strain on the ankles when moving the broader surface area. These muscles can easily become injured if they are not yet strong enough, so these fins are a versatile choice for beginners. Also, many swimmers prefer the slightly smaller size fin when training in a pool due to crowded lane space or will elect for an easier fin to move during turns and on the wall."

Okay found another one, but in tail making (knew there was more)

Well first and foremost- both flukes are freakin huge!! I have the first tail made with the new Calypso mold so I'm a bit biased, but I adore it. It's both edgy and elegant at the same time and because the overall shape is so streamlined it carries the flow of the dolphin kick motion really well. (Does that make sense?)

That streamlined look is why I lean towards the Calypso fluke. The Lorena has the best flow in my opinion; so I totally get what you're saying :). The side fins of the Lotus flop a lot.
There's a nice video of the Lorena and Lotus of McKenzie and Lorelei respectfully. You see the size differences really well and the flowiness. Though I'm pretty sure McKenzie has the competitor.

The new realistic one is really pretty. I've been also thinking of getting a new one that's even spiker than the Calypso but still streamlined.
Have you at least decided your colors?

I still can't decide scales....I can't find examples of their different scales though so I might just go with their classic one???

There's not a lot of mers with the Butterfly, or even Betta flukes, oh and the Luna also the Lagoon but that's really old. I can only recall two with that fluke, the yellow sea dragon one used in the fairy mermaid movie that is SUPER CUTE AND FINFOLK-TASTIC. And the super colorful rainbow one. Those are the only two I've ever seen with the Butterfly one.
There's only three scales I've seen: round, their signature diamond (not sure if that's referred to as the classic), and the dragon ones (only ever featured on Arion's blue tail).
MY BAD: There's also the mantis one, so there's three with that fluke.

Yeah, I'm definitely getting heel fins and a dorsal fin. Not quite sure yet if I want hip fins but I'm leaning towards no.
They haven't said when they're going to start working on it but they posted on BaseCamp that any orders that were placed more than a year before that post (which includes me) were going to be worked on in December or January. I'm secretly kinda hoping that it pushes into February. I'm saving to get individual scales and I probably won't have enough saved until then.

Can anyone link to the different style of Finfolk flukes? I am an unabashed photo-stalker of their work but I feel like there are styles being mentioned that I have yet to see? Maybe I just don't know their names. Can someone offer guidance?
*Edit: Because, well might as well ask another question if I'm going to be taking up this much blank space:
I'm heaps keen to get into the Finfolk production schedule. We began corresponding 3 months ago, and I was ready to order at the point but it still hasn't officially happened. This is not a complaint. Just curious to know how long it took other people, in the last year or so, to be booked?

Hi Salty! I contacted the girls in July 2016. They answered a few questions for me and were really upfront that they were considering not taking new orders for awhile, but they could add me to the production calendar as long as I was okay with a 12+ month wait time. I didn't mind and paid my deposit that night. I had my BaseCamp invite within the week. I think they go in order based on the date the deposit is paid. Someone else may be able to confirm.
I'm not sure what they decided about custom orders - I noticed the website says their silicone tails are sold out? I bet if you email them with another "READY TO ORDER" subject line, they'll get back to you to let you know what the status is. Good luck!

@Jake Can't wait to see what your tail comes out to be :D
@Mermaid Salty
They haven't updated their templates in years. But here are the following flukes:
Lagoon (I have only seen this on one mer and it's rather old so not sure if it's been "retired")
Realistic
Lorenna
Lotus
Calypso (new vs old cut lorena)
Betta (this template does not have the smaller scales gradient; older style)
Luna (only one has been done)
Mythic (I'm including this even though it's just tied to the Mythic line)
Customize (You pay like $500 which is more the cost of the mold and creativity ability)
I don't think I'm missing any BUT there's a few unnamed ones and what I call "fluke extensions" since they're more like add ons to the Lorenna fluke more often than not. I'll post actual photos since they're a little hard to explain:
39921
Source: Finfolk
39922
Source: WW Mermaids
There's also the new fluke that's yet to come out that's based on a goldfish. I know the mers getting this fluke and it's supposed to be a surprise so I'm keeping quiet until it's posted officially. However I don't know if it'll be available to everyone (I'm not sure if you could monopolize a custom). I'm finding it hard to explain right now.
I believe that's all the flukes they've done and continue to do. They've stopped really old ones, like the leaf ones.
*~*~*
As for contacting them for silicone I waited for two weeks (just checked cause I thought it was longer), sent a follow up email, before I heard back and was added to basecamp the next day (I was at work at the time and was ecstatic to say the least). That was in August/September 2016. I had inquired some things before but those were just questions and honestly I didn't think I would be able to order a tail from them. I've heard back twice since then, one of which was the end of the year update they sent out.
I would assume they've cut down what they're accepting right now to 1. catch up and 2. mythic but it never hurts to shoot a "READY TO ORDER" email and see what happens as long as you're ready to order obviously. And yes you should capitalize it. I do know they are trying to cut down their waiting time but to do so involves getting through everything they're accumulated so far.
*~*~*
Another side note, I did order new leggings and have yet to hear about those. I did get my Black Friday ones in a timely matter, I'd have to check actual dates, but I don't think it was any longer than what I've had to wait for Amazon stuff.

Thank you both very much for your replies. I have sent follow ups (all subjects READY TO ORDER - no issues there whatsoever), I've sent one just recently. My eager mind wonders how often is appropriate to email them ;)
I also appreciate that they're probably stupid busy right now. The mythic tails are so beautiful and so popular! I will try to be patient but it is so hard to contain my excitement.
Mer Coralia, thank you so much for listing those designs, I'll have some fun searching. I've seen the first fluke extensions before, but not the second! These girls continue to delight.
Thanks again for the advice.

So I know that with the new Mythic Tails mermaids have been wanting Finfolk to make tops to go with the tails, etc. Well... I found something interesting by accident today... I have been looking on Organic Armor's site because I am interested in how they make their armor and they have made armor for several merfolk. I just happened to click on one of their articles talking about what they did in 2016 and what they plan on doing in 2017. Here is one thing they said for 2017:
In cooperation with Finfolk Productions (https://finfolkproductions.myshopify.com/) – silicone mermaid tops!

I wanted to go too! It's about a 7 hour drive and I was really considering leaving work on Friday and driving straight there. I'm sure I'll have my tail by next year and will hopefully get to go.

Same! I rather put that money towards the tail (and some tops ;)) so I didn't go either, plus I much rather go with my silicone tail than a fabric tail.
I am hoping to attend Kelpstock though since that's way closer for me.
I doubt that I'll hear back anytime soon for silicone orders since they want to try and knock out all those people who have been waiting a year plus and start decreasing the overall wait time for everyone.

Hi everyone any updates on the Finfolk front? I read that they have been answering emails so was wondering if any full silicone customers are getting closer to working on their tails? :)

Hi y'all!
No news one getting started on my tail just yet but I did update them on changing the color concept of my tail. I went from dominantly pink to dominantly black lol! I'm a chameleon and my hair color changes so much so something like black with pearl highlight/glitter/iridescent will go with anything lol! I might wanna add some color for that pop but I'll see what they say. With that new and abrupt change, they did respond with excitement and are anxious as well to start back on creating silicone tails starting this month (per their social media post today!) wooooo!!!!!!
Also I changed from Calypso to Lotus fluke! My gut instinct is saying get the Lotus. I keep looking at different photos of it and my heart lies in that style fluke lol!

I am so excited to see your tail design, badkidbebe!
I've changed my design a few times myself, but I have at least a few months to go before my production date. It's so hard to decide! I might need more than one!

Same here, when I think professional or recreational tails, the first design I think of is one of the more famous ones by FinFolk [emoji175]

I got an update from the twins that they're starting the production of my tail! Still in the early stages, drafting the pattern. I've been waiting until closer to my production to share my design concept so since it's officially starting I can finally post these.

She's apparently been working with them for a year now but only now officially announced it. It's nice cause now her tops will perfectly match Finfolk's :)
I'm glad they found someone though. <3

New tail posted on the mid social media! Abalone inspired tail! So pretty and I love the double heel fins! 40621
Also do the pictures look ok or it is SUPER blurry? I'm using my phone and tapatalk app but it looks like my photo attachments look SO BLURRY. Let me know so I'll just upload on desktop

That tail is so awesome! How's your tail coming along? Shouldn't be long before yours is done, right?

Really good!!! They're already done with creating the pattern, body pours, and fluke pours!!! Right before production started, I last minute changed my color scheme from pink/black to dominantly black and like, pearly/iridescent! Much like a black pearl or black holographic fabric! I do love pink but I think a black tail would be good to start with and get a pink tail later. Idk how they'll blend it when painting it but I'll leave it to them! SO EXCITED!!!
How's yours going?!

Did you guys see the new fluke? I wonder who will be the first mer to opt for that. Excited to see what else will be rolling out! :)
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Unpopular opinion, but this is the first fluke from them I can actually see myself buying! So I'm trying to decide if the fins flow out like normal heel fins or are molded straight on...
But anyways wow! :D
