I have :) 7-8 weeks from now is my time frame at the moment.

Fintabulous! I can't wait to see Emily's tail!!! Melanie, do you have a style in mind?

I haven't gotten an eta for mine... They said originally that it would start at the end of October but with the move... I honestly don't know when mine will be started. :(

These are the colours I'm going with. Not 100% on patterning yet - FF are going to send me some coloured templates soon.

Also, people keep calling me Melanie xD I feel as though I should change my name to something a little less confusable, haha.

I'm on the queue, somewhere, but have not heard a timeframe. Originally they said it would be done well ahead of MerFest. I am hoping that it'll be done by then.

Those are some great colors Melaina! I like seeing warm colors tails! And sorry about the name, LOL. I think it's one of those things whr jst lk u cn wrt wtht mst vwls nd ppl cn stll rd wht s bng wrttn, when your mind is used to seeing something and hasn't seen it the other way, it tends to flop the letters in your mind so you actually read 'Melanie'. Thanks, Seavanna! I'm an Autumn so warm colours really look better on me :)

And yeah, I totally get what you mean about the opposite dyslexia xD it probably doesn't help that we do have a Mermaid Melanie on here too, haha.

I just heard back from Finfolk - they said my tail should be ready end of November/early December. I have gigs lined up mid-December and onward so I'm really crossing all my fingers, toes and fins that it'll be here in time. I really want to use my new tail for these gigs!

Mermaid Octavia
11-15-2013, 03:31 PM
*sigh* Sad news...

The venue that booked us on December 14th will not allow me to use the silicone tail because it'll arrive too late for their "approval" process. I'm pretty depressed about it and could use some mer-hugs. I understand their reasoning but I was really hoping to use this tail at this event as a sort of "debut" and now I can't. I'm not faulting Finfolk at all; because of their move and the delays associated with that, it can't be helped. Still. I tried everything I could to see if I could be an exception to the approval rule deadline and was given a resounding "no." :(

EDIT - I should clarify and say that I'm not mad, just sad.

Wow... That sounds harsh to me! :(
It's a shame that they couldn't be more understanding. What is the deal with a silicone tail exactly? silly safety issues?

I'm sorry Octavia. I'm sending you hugs and love from France

Do you have a back-up tail though? Have you talked about this to the Finfolk team and see if they can do a (tiny) little rush?

Mermaid Octavia
11-15-2013, 03:43 PM
Oh there's nothing wrong with the silicone tail in and of itself, it's just that they want a very clean, appropriate and modest image for the mermaids that attend these events. I do have a backup tail, thank Neptune, and I'll be wearing that. My silicone tail comes up just as high as my neoprene tail and I'm always very modest. I understand their reasoning for the approval process but unfortunately, since I was already given a "no" on the silicone tail, no amount of rushing the order would do anything for me. :(

Oh well. I'm just venting so I feel a little bit better about it. In the long run it won't really be a big deal, I was just getting my hopes (unrealistically) up.

/hugs back

:(

They have their reasons and I'm just telling myself, "Hey, I'll have my tail soon and I'll just have more practice getting in and out of it for later gigs". The initial complaining I did on here made me feel better about it. I was just so excited to use my tail at this event since production has been pushed back about four weeks.

It's at an aquarium so I'm sure they have more than enough stuff on their plate as it is. But thank you for the support, you guys. <3

Theobromine
11-15-2013, 05:03 PM
They won't allow it due to modesty rules? That makes no sense.....what aquarium is this?

Mermaid Octavia
11-15-2013, 05:17 PM
@Theo: No, and I apologize if I'm not wording this properly. I'm very modest already (as you can see in my avatar), no stomach showing ever and I don't have much in the way of breasts so that's never an issue. But regardless, the venue wants to approve our looks if we change anything, especially tails. That's just how they do things and I apparently missed a deadline somewhere.

Mermaid Octavia, as for modesty issues, did you ever considered having a corset that covers well the chest or an appropriate tankini top?

MerEmma
11-17-2013, 11:32 AM
Mermaid Octavia, as for modesty issues, did you ever considered having a corset that covers well the chest or an appropriate tankini top?

That's not the issue--she's said that above. It's too late for a new article of her costume to be approved, the deadline has passed and she has to wear her old tail that has been approved by those running the event. It's not a modesty issue, it's that it's too late to wear the tail.

Nope, they just said I'm removed from the group effective Friday, but I didn't see the email until Monday. None of my texts or emails have been answered and no reason was given as to why I was removed. They just said, "a new direction for the group", which is really generic. I asked if I had done something specific and if I had caused a problem unknowingly but I've gotten radio silence. So who knows.

I think this is the universe telling me to do my own thing, I guess!

Maybe they figured that when you got your silicone tail you'd get more attention and gigs than the others? (assuming here that they don't have silicone tails but fabric tails) if you decide to do your own thing I wish you luck and many a fabulous gigs!

That would have been the right thing to do, but... It's been three days since I asked why and I've gotten nothing in return so I don't think I'll ever get an answer. I have my theories but I'm just going to be the bigger person and move on from it. I'll have my new tail (hopefully) soon and I'm already checking out my options for fun gigs to do. :)

As someone newish to the community who had no prior opinion of Raven's tails, I honestly think they are better. They are just so creative!!! All the different designs they do are so awesome! I can't say on quality, obviously, but I had no biases one way or the other and I think FinFolk's are awesome-- good job, ladies!!!

People who have tail from FinFolk, help me out! What does it mean to start doing pours? The twins told me today they started that, but they had said they would contact me on how to make the tail look man o war ish/ tentacle like and now they say they will contact me when painting! I am in panic mode. I do NOT want the basic fluke (if I have to choose from the three with no mods I would get the one Syrena got because I do NOT like the basic fluke.). I just feel like my order has spun out of control--why wouldn't they have contacted me about what I want before just going? I am so freaked out. I cannot get the basic fluke, I will never be happy with it....

Seatan
12-14-2013, 10:36 AM
Never mind, they are just pouring the body piece!!!! Since the message said they would contact me when painting I got confused, but they will contact me before sculpting the extra stuff too. Sorry for freaking out, I just know how busy they are (I know they are doing multiple tails at a time) and was worried mine has been mixed up or they had thought we had already talked. I am siooooo excited; their stuff is soooo gorgeous! I do not know how they churn so many out AND they are all beautiful. That's supertalent there!

Seatan
12-14-2013, 12:32 PM
Frenchie, they just started mine yesterday and I ordered on October 19th, so they are FLYING. Less than two months, and I know that in that time period they have made (at the very least) Syrena's, Emily's, Octavia's, their second betta fish tail, another girl from Singapore's, and Dan's. I think they are doing others, too. They said they are working on multiple tails at a time. Their speed is craziness, but they all turn out so magnifico! (I accidentally typed 'Magneto' there. Comic book villain tails! Yay! Actually, considering it's the X-Men, I could see that....)

The FinFolk ladies have started designing my tail! *squeal* they have some awesome ideas to make it look Man O War ish: We've got some ankle/calf tentacles running down the sides on the larger picture on the right. To the left are some concepts for your dorsal with adding in some light tentacle-ing up by the dorsal to carry the theme around the tail. Then I brought a line of tentacles down the back of the tail over the heals so there can be a bit of a wrap around effect from the calves that will carry the tentacles farther down the tail. My goal for this is to create that very flowy, delicate look that you see in the Man O War and other jelly fishes. I'd do a variation of textured and plain tentacles throughout, with some varying thicknesses lengths. Again, all in an aim to really capture the delicate, flowy look of the Man O War.

It just sounds so awesome! This is gonna be the best Christmas/New Year gift ever. It is officially to me, from my dogs, LOL.

What are you going to ask?

I asked for a basic fluke with competitor monofin, ankles and hips fins and silver scales tipping.

I want the loreena fluke, 2 extra fins near the hips, one set near the ankles, competitor mono fin, and gold scale tipping. Colors will be blue/teal/green with gold.

I hear you. I didn't give them my measurements yet. I'm still waiting to find a professional seamstress to do so. I could ask my grandmother and my boyfriend to do the job but it wouldn't hurt to see a professional just to make sure. ~As a quick question, can anyone who got a finfolk tail, or is just familiar with monofins, recommend wither or not to upgrade from the trainer to the competitor? This seems to be the only thing I'm conflicted about when sorting out my tail details. I'm leaning toward moving up to the competitor, but I don't want to waste money upgrading the tail if it's unnecessary.

Hey guys. I've been studying (ie, zooming in and out on pictures) most of the tails to see what the seams and little details look like. I wanted to ask how the flukes look in sunlight/lit from behind. From what I've seen, there is a clear line where the monofin ends and solid silicone takes over. But I think I've only seen flukes with the competitor. Does anyone have a fluke with the rapid?

All of your tails are unbelievably beautiful, by the way! I'm really starting to lean towards investing in a FinFolk tail.

Theobromine
03-28-2014, 09:05 PM
I have a Competitor in mine. Here is a picture of it with the sun behind it: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=210908672392207&set=a.210908425725565.1073741830.206621792820895&type=3&theater (sorry for no pretty link, I'm in a hurry). The monofin only really shows through the fluke if you hold it up to the light like that. Also, I'm pretty sure Abby and Bryn don't put Rapids in any of their tails, because of the obnoxious ankle straps. I think their standard monofin is actually a Trainer, which has ankle straps/footpockets like those on the Competitor.

Seraphina Suds
03-28-2014, 09:28 PM
Oooh, okay. I thought I had read somewhere in the thread that the other option was the rapid, but I think I did see talk about the trainer as well. Just misread~

Thanks for the picture! It looks similar in the other tails I was looking at too.

Theobromine
03-28-2014, 10:30 PM
Yeah, that's pretty much how it will look for any silicone tail with a Competitor in it. And they did used to put Rapids in tails as their default option (pretty sure ChristoMer's first tail had one) but they stopped because there were too many issues with the ankle straps. And as someone who has also done a lot of swimming with a Rapid just by itself, I would never want to have one in a tail! The strap slips off a lot and the clip that holds it down between the feet also comes undone easily. It's easy enough to fix when you're just using the fin, but inside a silicone tail it would just be a nightmare. But anyway, when I talked to Abby and Bryn about the Trainers they were using in their tails (the betta tail might have the first one, not sure if they used it before then), it gave pretty good propulsion, at least as good as a Rapid. But personally, I am really glad I went for the Competitor upgrade.

You're very welcome! I really did think the Competitor would be difficult to use, but it really isn't (for me anyway). I was thinking it would be a lot stiffer to swim in but it glides and moves so nicely, and fits my feet so well that I don't need socks! I'm a woman's US size 9.

Hmm, I checked up on the finis website and for both the competitor and the trainer and it's showing the smallest size as a medium (womans 7.5-9). I guess I might just have to go with wearing big socks or something, I'm not sure.
Feels kinda silly that they wouldn't have a little bit smaller sizing.

Winged Mermaid
04-01-2014, 04:03 PM
I'm a W 6.5 (though for water sports wear, sometimes size 4 is still to large) and I can wear the "medium" size competitor (in my tail) with 2 pairs of 2mm socks and it's just fine :) If you want smaller sizes, you'll need to go with another monofin. The finis foil has xs and s covering the women's sizes 3-5 and 5.5-8.

I guess Finis just doesn't have enough female customers to keep them interested. After all, they discontinued the Tempo and the smaller sizes for their fiberglass fins :/

I might be selling my tail as well. I've been thinking of selling my merbellas tail for a finfolk tail lately. I feel like finfolk is on the same tier as merbellas as far as quality goes, and I like the fluke designs that finfolk offers. I honestly feel sort of bored with my merbellas tail, I'd like a new fluke design and a new color scheme. I used to dream about making silicone tails, but finfolk has actually done just about every shape I've come up with. So I feel like I should follow my heart and get one of their tails.

Seriously Aylah? But your tail is one of the best flowy tails that Raven made! :(
If you feel "bored", you could ask Raven to do a new paint job don't you think? Perhaps adding some fins? Of course, you could also get a new tail from Finfolk Productions, you would look GREAT in one! :D

I'd love to ask Raven to do a new paint job on my tail, but I'm extremely strapped for cash (actually in the red) and can't afford shipping to and from her shop. Finfolk is based just a couple of hours away from Duluth and I have many friends who live in that area who can help transport the tail for me so I don't have to pay shipping. Also, one other person mentioned that since Finfolk is so close to where I live, I can probably go in for a personal appointment and design my tail with them. This of course isn't final, and the whole thing depends on if and when I can sell my current tail, and how soon a new tail can be ready, but I just wanted to see how everyone else feels about it. And maybe if anyone would be interested in buying my merbellas tail.

Can I ask what the measurements are for your tail? :3

Can I ask what the measurements are for your tail? :3

Sure! I went by the width of the tail itself because I've gained weight since I got it and it doesn't fit quite right anymore.
Length: 38"
Waist: 26"
Hip: 32"
Knees: 24"
Ankles: 16"

These measurements may not be completely accurate, but if you're 5'3" or shorter, it should fit.

Ugh, so my tail didn't end up coming today. I called DHL and they said it was still at the warehouse. They couldn't tell me why it hadn't been picked up for delivery :\

So I'm going to go pick it up from the warehouse tomorrow morning. So disappointing, but at least they're open tomorrow so I don't have to wait till Monday.

The only issue with it is that it's a little too big in the hip area. When it's dry, it's way too big, which caused me to freak out when I put it on, but once it gets wet it suctions to my body and it's pretty much perfect :) so, overall, I'm happy! And the colours look amazing underwater.

...Which I guess is essentially what an unboxing video is xD

No, not really; I just wanted it to be green and burgundy, since they're two of my favourite colours, and a lot of fresh-water fish tend to be those sorts of colours (bass, rainbow trout, etc). I wanted to look like I had rolled out of a lagoon/pond :)

Melaina, just wondering how you ended up with those pelvic fins. They are gorgeous! Did you design the shape or did the twins? I am trying to decide which shape fins I want (and trying to choose where they are going. Definitely want ankle fins but can't decide between pectoral or pelvic).

Mermaid Kelda
04-16-2014, 08:32 AM
I drew this sketch:
http://i.imgur.com/GD43SJq.jpg?1
And then asked them to do whatever they liked to make it work :)
They didn't charge me any extra for the custom sculpt, because they were confident they could use the design again. You could always send them some sketches and see what they say!

As for the fin positions, I'm assuming you mean pectoral as on the hips ("side fins"), and pelvic on the front of the body (like mine)? It gets confusing sometimes because we don't really name fins by where they should be on a mermaid (by all rights "pectorals" should be somewhere near the boobs) but rather as if our tails are fish whose heads start at our waists.
http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artnov08macro/CaitShannon/caitlinshannon_web/labeledfish.jpg

In any case, fin position really depends on tail design/colour in my opinion. Some tails lend themselves to large, textured side fins:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/q74/s720x720/1475998_249333351897277_836954018_n.jpg

While others look best with cute little fins on the belly:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/t1.0-9/p480x480/1012109_189253047905308_879341682_n.jpg

So, I think you really need to consider colour scheme and patterning in conjunction with fins :)

Here's an idea, you may have already thought of it...get a space at a local craft fair, farmer's market or other street fair, wear your tail, dress up your space all mermaidy and hand out business cards and flyers as a mermaid party entertainer...if you do face painting, or have a little treasure chest you can fill with little giveaway toys, even better! Meet the kids in your area and stir up a buzz. You'll be mermaiding at parties before you know it!

That is, if that's what you want to do!

I am planning an order for a Finfolk tail asap and I'm just wondering for those who have ordered from them, did you get the basic trainer monofin or upgrade to the competitor? Just curious how that decision affected your tail, made it swim differently etc...?

Marlin
04-27-2014, 06:55 PM
Competitor- For me (I have huge feet, so the monofin is huge to begin with) it made my fluke massive. Which made it a little tough to get used to in the water, as well as a huge strain on my ankle muscles which I am working on building up.

That being said, I love everything about it. I wanted to have a big fluke and knew I would have to do some work on my end to be able to use it. I also love the speed it gives me when I have a patch of open water and can really get moving.

Mermaid Kelda
04-28-2014, 08:52 AM
I have tiiiiny feet (AU size 5/6, which is about a 7 US) so I was scared that the competitor might not fit my feet, but I went ahead and ordered it anyway. Aside from blisters on my second toes on both feet (which a pair of neoprene socks fixed) I'm really glad I got it. It swims beautifully, the fluke holds in the air, the flop is very pretty, and it's a stronger fin overall.

If your tail is going to be mostly a dry tail, don't bother with the competitor, because it's huge and cumbersome. But it's fantastic for swimming :)

Mermaid Octavia
04-28-2014, 11:27 AM
Competitor for me! It's super huge and super fast underwater. Above water, it's very heavy and difficult to maneuver, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. The speed it gives me in the water is exactly what I wanted (and I'm a women's US 9).
