Has any one had experience sitting in a finfolk that has a Dorsal? Was looking at the one on ebay but wondering if it would be a pain for seated gigs/ what the chances of ripping it off over time.

Thanks so much! :D Can't believe it's so soon when it felt like forever a day ago. If everything goes right, my tail will be shipped off in two weeks and I asked about yours and they said they have it scheduled to be done in time for Merfest so everything is back on track! :)

Hey Guys, I'm new to this forum, and I apologize I'm terrible with figuring out where to post questions, I notice that some of you on her have a finfolk tail and I really would like to purchase one, I'm just worried about placing measurements and loosing/gaining wait. Can anyone give me insight on how the tails actually fit? would there be wiggle room for plus or minus a few inches? I would hate to order one and have it not fit. Thanks! I keep going back and forth between Merbella and finfolk. Finfolks color work is just so beautiful and I am in love with their Loreena fluke.

I was indifferent towards the movie itself - it was the reaction that baffled me. Winning awards, being hailed as pro feminist... Those characters were some of the stupidest, weakest female characters I've seen in a while :rolleyes:

The story was predictable and boring, and the whole thing felt more like a really long episode of some show, rather than a meaningful and engrossing film.

Plus, now whenever something is icy or blue, it's "Elsa inspired" (though in this case it actually was)
But, to each their own :P the tail is still beautiful!

I agree; I think I liked the concept and the older story Disney based it off of, far better. A good friend of mine also did a lot of the environmental design for the film (the lighting/ice effects and surroundings).
With that said; the character design hooked me, and I made two amazing Elsa costumes this year for a few events.
That Finfolk tail is heart-wrenchingly gorgeous, and even though I've been kinda 'meh' about anymore Frozen stuff, that particular tail makes me want to rock my inner snow queen mermaid ;)

More undertones are going to be added to the fluke veins along with a little bit of green-blue overall, then soft strips on the front and spots on the back (and adding on the dorsal and heel fins)!
I'm seriously so in love. I've been having a lot of crap going on lately (countless school/work issues and one of my beloved pets going into an expensive surgery early tomorrow), it's been a hard week but after seeing the pictures, I already feel better and like I can handle everything. :)

Awwwe I seriously cannot begin to express how much that means to me. Thank Q so much mersister! <3 :D It's so exciting! Can't wait for you to experience it too. It's definitely is a shining light in the midst of darkness, I'm sorry all that happened to you. :( I hope the new year brings great things for you too. <3 I'm hoping for a nice fresh start. Moving to Seattle and going to a new school. We had to cancel the Hawaii trip sadly due to financial troubles with it, but are going to Disneyworld instead because it is cheaper and still something big to do for our anniversary, so we have that next year at least and hopefully Mermaid July and I can spend a month together and film our mermaid show. Lots of good things coming and definitely planning all the swims I can. :)
Sorry I'm going on and on, I've had barely an hour of sleep. Had to stay up with my girl until the vet opened because she reopened her stitches and it's going to cost more money we don't have right now >< ugh, nap time while I wait for my tail to soon be here :P

Thank Q so much! :D I've been to Seattle many times, especially now that my cousin is going to the University there, and I love it every time (well, everything but the traffic, ugh)! It's a much easier drive from Seattle to my home in Sacramento than Moscow is and about about 3 hours shorter, which is going to be a nice change. I would definitely love to plan a meet up! :D
My friend and I plan on meeting up this summer to make a mermaid series on Youtube so there will be plenty of swimming videos on the way!

I messaged them yesterday asking if the fluke was a custom one for a customer, or a new one to their line, and if so I'd like to talk about changing my fluke to that one instead. I'm actually in Photoshop right now testing it out, haha!

I would say that's up to you. What's more important in this case? Getting a rushed tail to merfest or a quality tail to your home a month later?
If the girls said they would rather have more time, I would trust them. But that's just me.

I don't have a finfolk, but Storm does and we do some gigs together, but if your tail is anything like hers, or mine (merbella/competitor) you will need breaks in tha 8 hours, do lots of stretches, eat some bananas for potassium, but you will be in pain either way you slice the cake after 8 hours in a tail, and possibly monofin blisters, just be prepared, bring pillows or something so you can shift well( if you are laying down and can get some cool mermaidy ones) if you are in a chair figure out how your fluke will lay because that can have a huge difference on how numb your feet go. But you will need a 30 minute break in there somewhere at least one just to stretch. That's just my opinion of seeing storm do a 3 hour gig on dry land, and doing a few longer gigs myself as well. If you are a master and already have your method then rock on

When I ordered my tail in august I was emailing them asking for what would be the fluke if I wanted the tail to stay as light as possible. They said back then that there would be a new fluke design, probably lighter than the others they had atm. I'm guessing this is it, hopefully :)

Amelia and I did a six hour event in hour tails last month. Definitely agree. Take breaks! And see if you can move around as little as possible. And have somewhere comfy to sit! Lots of cushions. We didn't get breaks and we were sweaty and exhausted at the end. Also make sure you have shade and water and food!

Well that's very close to what we were going for with the design :D so that's an awesome compliment. I was going for the dark siren type of mer rather than the sunshine and rainbows mer, lol. It matches the character I will be playing as well as my own personal self, I'm so in love with how it turned out! ^^
It was scary for me wondering if the design would look as well in person as it does on paper, but it looks better than I ever imagined! :D

I've been debating something lately, I'm hoping anyone reading this can maybe help. Regarding an unboxing video, I really want to do one, but since I am at my California home for the holidays it makes it difficult. My parents love to easedrop sometimes and tend to come in at random inopportune times and with my anxiety added into the mix, it makes it hard to do a carefree unboxing video. I've been debating doing it after they go to sleep, but even then I can't be loud. So does anyone have any ideas about what to do?
I've thought about maybe doing it silently and adding subtitles later or maybe using a whiteboard?
Also been conflicted about making a Facebook page, but in the long run, I don't think I will since I don't really see a point to it.

Yes, I actually am against it. :( Like I said, I have anxiety and cannot film my videos in front of family otherwise I will go into a panic attack or freeze up. I need to be alone to film sadly. My boyfriend sometimes films for me since he's one of the few people I'm completely comfortable with, but he is with his own family now and is unable to come over. It's not really a matter of surprises, it's more that my parents are extemely judgemental of every move I make. They already aren't to keen on my mermaiding.
As for the page, yea I do plan on photoshoots but not really much business. I think I'll just stick to my Tumblr, Instagram and Youtube. I'll only make a Facebook page if Mermaid July and I's mermaid series takes off.

Mm, I disagree. I really feel where you're coming from, Lorelei. Even if I know there's not rational reasons, I still get very tense/anxious when parts of my life are exposed where my parents can see/make comments. Just sets something off to make me feel bad, even if I tell myself they can't do anything/their opinion on it doesn't matter.

Maybe, if you set up some music with your speakers facing the door (so the sound's not traveling right towards you) & film behind it? There'll probably be music in the background of your video then, but it might mask your voice. At least enough so they don't walk in wondering who you're talking to. And as long as you then talk close enough to your camera/computer we should still be able to hear. I think that or subtitles could work (I like subtitles in general on things, I don't always catch what people are saying otherwise).

Thank you so much Jade. I'm never really sure how to ever begin explain it to people who don't understand it. The only thing I can ever really say for most to understand is that I do have serious anxiety that causes me to have panic attacks and sometimes seizers despite situations that are simple or no big deal to others. I wish I could control it, if I could simply will it away and not give a care in the world, I would without second thought, but the fact of the matter is that I can't. My parents were loving and gave me a good start so that I could be a successful adult, but like anyone else, they aren't perfect and their fault is extreme judgement in every little move I make. Sure they can't really do anything, yea, but with anxiety in the mix and the constant irrational thoughts, it's the last situation I want to willingly put myself in and I don't have my inhaler or pills on me for the after effect.
But I guess this is stuff I should be saving to rant about in the mental health thread someday, haha. :)
And thank you for the suggestion, I think it might work, espically if I wait until after everyone is asleep before I go to bed. I'll explain to them that I'm going to do a video and to try not to come in before they go to bed and that might help everything work out. :)

Lorelei, it's cool. Mermaiding is something special to you and sometimes you have to protect those things that are dear to you from judgmental people. Sometimes those people are family. There are some situations where you'll have to stand up for yourself, and other times it's better to just not engage and get away from those people so you can do your thing. I was in chorus through high school, and I refused to practice at home. I couldn't sing a note without some kind of comment from the peanut gallery, and it was honestly oppressive. So I'd find every excuse to stay at school after hours or go to a friend's house to practice. I felt more comfortable practicing in front of complete strangers, but I would not sing in front of my family. Now, I can sing in front of anyone and not be bothered by any of their judgements, but it took building my confidence away from those people to get there, and if I'd continued to try to just ignore them and practice through all of their bs, then it would have taken all of the joy out of it and I would have quit.

I disagree on the speculations that the twins copied Raven's fluke. It certainly looks familiar but if the new Finfolk fluke design is based from the She-Creature mermaid too, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Yes, Raven is the first that has done a design inspired from this movie BUT we shouldn't forget that it's her choice if she's not offering it to the customers. So we are certainly not gonna hold it against the twins for having a similar idea AND offering the option to the customers.

I am actually designing some flukes atm and I have been doing a very similar butterfly wing vein and cutout thing completely independent of both of these flukes that are being spoken about. Sometimes it is just a coincidence! And I think this has a very different fantasy feel and a very different shape and idea about it all together! :) Like nothing I have seen before shape wise.

Also art is all about influences, references and transformation. Raven's was inspired by she-creatures. Lots of tails are inspired by the Splash tail. It is ok to be inspired by something and to make interpretations. In fact there is allowances under copyright law for "Transformative" uses under the Fair Use provision. (Not that that is entirely relevant because unfortunately tails don't come under copyright in quite the same way). But I don't think that is the case here. Because coincidences are allowed to happen too ;) ;) (Please don't yell at me Merbella fans! Hahaha).

This fluke looks butterfly inspired to me. It's not much of a stretch to conclude that two tailmakers chose to make a butterflylike fluke.

To me it looks like a mix between She Creature and a fairy— but in the end, logically, the fairy influence makes the most sense. They said themselves that they were inspired by Twig, and although there's been some demand for a fluke like Raven's She Creature, I've seen almost double the demand for fairy/butterly-styled flukes. It seems to me like the similarities to Raven's fluke are more coincidental than anything else, and they weren't trying to copy Raven intentionally.

I have always though that the thing that sets finfolk tails apart is that fantasy fairy like feel to them. A slightly more romantic take on the classic Mermaid. That is why I love them! Love that they are taking the fairy inspired thing to another level.

Our new fluke was both inspired and designed by Twig the Fairy (renown festival performer Kathy Gfeller.) The major ideas conveyed were leafy sea dragon and butterfly. Any similarities are completely coincidental. The teardrop (in this case, butterfly) shaped texturing is very reminiscent of Twig and all of her artistic flair. From a technical standpoint, the overall look, feel, and design of this fluke is completely different from anything related to She-Creature.

My sister Bryn of Finfolk sculpted this fluke and is an extremely talented and visionary artist. The sculpting talent alone that it took to create this piece is not something that I, or many, people posses. We strive for complete individuality and originality with our tails. We have too much demand as it is, copying someone else would make completely zero sense when we have the whole wide world of our OWN ideas to be creating and bringing to life. (In short- why would we copy someone when we already run a successful company?) Also, while we do not actively follow Raven's work, we very deeply respect her as an artist, and believe that her style is beautiful and uniquely her own.

Additionally we have never even seen She-Creature. :p

Also please don't take my design but I just wanted to share my dream tail that I hope to get from Finfolk productions one day its dragon inspired based around the dragon shaped individual scales changed my colors from the darker planned colors cause I wanted something to match my blonde hair so went for blues greens and whites. Now I just have to save and hope I can get one one day!

Sigh! Wish I could get one now but oh well guess it can't happen straight away but I just dont want this to be a phase I grow out of as I love mermaids and fantasy creatures and the water so I hope I can keep up my enthusiasm for it whilst I get the money together for a flipper eventually as it sucks not having work so I can't go ahead with my new interest lol :P But am working on my own hobby just need to get more stuff together to try selling as right now it isn't mermaid related and need to get more of the general stuff made before I can look at doing the mermaid stuff but will post it on here when its available lol :)

That's a beautiful design, Rebecca! You might find it hard to swim in, though, having a separated fluke like that. It's the middle section of the fin, the part you've removed, that gives you the most propulsion.

But if you're after beauty rather than speed, then you don't have to worry about propulsion :) just as long as you realise it might be difficult to go very far underwater in one breath. You don't want to get to the bottom and run out of breath, and not be able to get back to the top fast enough!


And I can't wait to get savings together for a tail and to start practicing with a monofin if I can find one that will fit a size 6 1/2 foot?? Is there any chance of that or what do I do regarding foot size etc?? Thanks
I have the same foot size as you, and I was worried the competitor in my tail would be too big (even the smallest size, a medium, is meant to fit a 7.5 - 9) but I found that wearing neoprene booties really helped. You might even find that you have to wear booties to stop blisters, in which case you need a larger monofin anyway.

If you live near any other mers, you might be able to meet up and try out their monofins. Worth investigating :)

Some of you may remember this finfolk tail. I wanted to share this video with you guys of some training swims. I absolutely adore the trailing edges on this tail. This tail resembles a Butterfly fish and is used for educating kids about predator avoidance, countershading and animal adaptations.

Thanks cora wanted something dragon inspired in a mermaid tail since I love fantasy and dragon spikes look so awesome in my opinion lol! now to save the money for it to be made :) And in the meantime get a pair of booties and a flipper to practice swimming in :) Glad you like it I love the design I did above!

Going to play around with some other designs in the meantime whilst saving too as there are some beautiful jelyfish etc out there too! Just for fun and to fil in time whilst waiting lol but I really do love the design above!

Thanks doesn't look totally how I want it as for the fins I want dark blue outline with some dark blue stripes along with bright blue stripes dark green stripes, emerald green stripes and turquoise and white stripes in between for contrast with the bodice on the fins! I also want dark green/blue shading along the very bottom of the fluke with the same streaks as the fins going top to bottom or basically following the different fin shapes. I figured better to keep the waist simple with individual scales and bright blue scale tipping with turquoise and white shading for the bodice (basically a light blue to contrast against the greens etc in the fins but to keep the fins tying in I would like some of the same colors from the bodice in the fins!

Was also thinking maybe some very small white spots on the fins but will see as I am not sure if that will be too much when the time comes but will see hehe.

Thanks glad it is alot better and I didn't think of that with large scales but you are right lol and at least it sticks with the dragon theme of the tail lol :P

Oh my gosh, BEYOND excited! :D It is a tad big for me in the hips, but I'm hoping the water will suction it to me a bit better. There's an indoor pool here, they let me swim with my fabric tail before a few years ago. I'm hoping a silicone one won't be any different to them. :)

The yellow/ purple one with the new fluke reminds me of a leafy sea dragon :D

But I'd have to say the pink and yellow tail with the dark blue stripes is my fave. Followed by the yellow and pink with the light blue and then the purple and yellow with the purple striped. They make brightly coloured tails look SO AMAZING!

Mine's big at the hips, too. You really can't notice as long as the waist is snug, and yes, it does suction in the water :)

Omg, I can't stop drooling over all the special tails they made for Merfest!!! I love the Frozen tail and the dark purple, pink yellow one with the dark stripes, all the way in the top right corner, *sigh* if only I could win one of those, it would make my Year!

Weeks ago I talked to the twins and they were still going to try and have my tail done for Merfest, and even use it as a show peice. Since then I've gotten no communication, no updates, only photos of all these tails none if which are mine. I'm frustrated, stressed, and I feel very betrayed. It's really not ok to tell someone, especially a customer, something- and then do something entirely different. I'm site there is a reason for what us happening, but I'd sure like to know what it is and I'm in the dark. :-/

I feel your frustration but I'm positive there is a good explanation about what is happening.
I believe in them. I have seen them working a lot. They really did their best to meet the expectations of everyone.

I guess some disappointments just couldn't be avoided :(

For what's worth, I'm fairly sure the wait will be worth it. You have seen the quality of their paint job on these tails.

Sometimes, things don't always go the way we plan them. I believe the girls know that too.

Don't think too much over this. This is New Year's eve and tomorrow, we will be in 2015. This will be your year as well as many other mermaids :)

I'm terribly sorry to hear about that maressa. :( I know they have been beyond busy lately (it took them 4+ days and me asking about it every day just to send me my tail's tracking number), but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end, just as my tail was for me and your tail will get to you in time. :)
Everything tends to happen for a reason, I hope 2015 bring in an amazing tail for you and more. ;)
