Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone out there owns a tail from Finfolk yet. I liked their page on Facebook and have been eyeballing their Kickstarter page for a while now: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1012274353/finfolk-productions-hawaii-experience

Anyway, I have been wanting a realistic/silicone mermaid tail for a REALLY long time now but have been hesitating due to the price. But I messaged Finfolk on Facebook this morning to ask a few questions about their tails, the Kickstarter campaign, and the time frame of actually receiving a tail if I ordered one, and they were VERY prompt and helpful in replying. I messaged back and forth with them for a while and they answered all my questions about prices, colors, customization, and measuring. This was, in fact, what caused me to decide to order from them rather than Merbellas, whose tails I have been drooling over for a long time now. The Finfolk tails look very well-made and beautiful, and it is clear that the girls take a lot of pride in their work. They are willing and enthusiastic about working with me to make my dream tail and I am sooo excited, I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Wow, congrats! I don't think anyone here has ordered a FinFolk tail yet but they do seem like wonderful people to work with! I can't wait to see your tail; will you share color schemes or are they a secret? :)

Theobromine
04-23-2013, 06:32 PM
I haven't nailed down my exact design yet but I know it will be mostly blue with gold accents. I will let everyone know how the tail turns out. I can't wait! They said I should have it by around June, when their Kickstarter campaign finishes.

Fantastic! I can't wait to read your review. Their work that I've seen so far is so gorgeous. What monofin?

Theobromine
04-23-2013, 06:53 PM
Their standard tail comes with a Rapid, but I wanted a Competitor so I'm paying a little bit more. Very reasonable, though. I already have a Rapid that I've had for a couple years and I really like it, it's great for training, but I don't like how they look in mermaid tails. And if I'm going to be shelling out (haha) for a full silicone tail, I might as well go the whole way. So excited!

MerEmma

Ooh, yes, the competitor I feel is definitely the way to go! <3 I'm excited for you! I'm curious, do they do extra fins?

Theobromine

Yep, they do. Don't know too much about that yet because I haven't decided if I want them or not.

So, can you see this picture from their Facebook page even if you don't have an account? (I don't know if it's public or not) https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=183975318433081&set=a.130777587086188.28451.126859280811352&type=1&theater

Otherwise, I don't think they will mind if I show off a couple of the progress pics they've sent me.

It's looking soooooooooo beautiful I can't believe I'm actually going to own this!!! I can't wait!

And Caltuna, I know they don't have a website yet as they're primarily just working through Facebook at the moment, but I'm sure they would love to hear from you; they've been fantastic to work with. I can ask if they mind me giving out their email so you can contact them (though they're also members on Mernetwork!)

What sort of monofin does Finfolk use in their tails?

Mermaid Varshana
06-18-2013, 10:05 AM
A FFP tail is $2500

Theobromine
06-18-2013, 10:58 AM
*squeeee* I love it so much, I'm glad you guys do too!

And yes, their standard tails are $2,500 and come with a Finis Rapid monofin. I wanted a Competitor in mine, so they added that for an extra $170 so all up I paid $2,670. They may charge extra for the extra fins normally, but because I ordered this tail through their Kickstarter, they said they had all the funds built in for that so I got my extra fins as part of the normal cost of the tail. If you are curious about ordering one, you would have to message them on Facebook and ask (they're really good about getting back to you. When I originally sent them a message to ask about ordering a tail, they messaged me back like five minutes later). Also, I did pretty much custom design or help them design all this myself (I was especially particular about the scales and the side fins, which I wanted to look like those of an Asian arowana), but all the molds are going into their repetoire for their big Hawaii project, and then for their normal tailmaking business, so these scale and fin shapes will be available for all :) I would just hope that no one would copy my fin and color combinations exactly.

I will be posting a full review once I get it and am able to swim in it and get some pictures!!

Hi Theobromine! Congrats! I was just looking and drooling over the construction pix! What an awesome tail and fluke! How long from when you ordered, got all the details (sizing, colors, scale shape, fluke shape...) and then completed? I would have to rob a bank right now to get one (my horses board runs about $1800, that comes first!) I can't wait for you to swim in it and post some pictures! Do you know if FinFolks cut your monofin in a sort of shape or is it still flat! That fluke is huge! I love it, love, love it! Congratulations again!

So I just went back through all my Facebook messages and it looks like I first contacted them to ask about ordering a tail on April 23. They shipped my tail yesterday, June 17. So that was less than three months but keep in mind that was with sculpting ALL new molds, including the scales. Which they sculpted individually, by hand, out of clay. Because I was that picky about the shape and the little details on the scales. That was the part that took the longest. Now that they have that scale sheet done it would go a lot faster. The second longest was probably my fluke sculpture. I kept sending them pictures and ideas throughout the process and they kept sending me progress pictures, which was awesome. Once all the molds were done it went really fast, probably only a couple of weeks. They worked really hard and did such an amazing job!

Anyway, I know they did have to cut the Competitor a little, but because it is such a nice expensive monofin I wanted to sacrifice as little of it as possible, so all they really did was round off the sharp edges (to keep it from tearing the silicone) and trim a notch in the middle to accommodate the middle part of the fluke shape. Mostly they just built onto it, so as to preserve as much of the surface area (and power) of the monofin as possible.

Finfolk should totally make the 'design your tail' templates with all their different flukes like Merbellas and the Mertailor do. As gorgeous as the pictures are, sometimes it's hard to see the exact fluke shape because it flows in the water. Not to mention I love coloring tail templates, lol. And it makes it easier to explain complex coloring schemes with a visual aid too. OMG! I just noticed how the two smaller hip fins are integrated into the scales! I am so impressed with this tailmaker.

Yay, Lorelei! I can't wait to swim with you! I...do have to practice putting it on a few more times, it's so tight it took me about an hour to struggle into. I think I have a better idea now of what it takes, though. You read all about other people's experiences, you think you know what you're getting into....then you try it yourself, haha. Well, they made it a bit extra tight for me because I told them I've been losing weight lately, and I was worried that if I keep losing weight it would end up too baggy. So this way it will accommodate a bit more weight loss (which I will hopefully accomplish!).

Yay I'm so excited for my next day off so I can try it out again!

I waited just under three months from when I first contacted them to ask about ordering, to when it showed up at my door. And that was WITH all the completely custom sculpture work (they sculped all my fins, fluke, and each and every scale by hand). Now that they have the new scale mold done it takes them far less time; I've seen on their Facebook page that they look like they've already almost finished at least one new tail for another customer, all while working on their own tails for their big Hawaii project. Go like them on Facebook and follow their progress!

That's what I'm screaming! The ONLY reason it's become accepted to wait that long for a tail is because the most popular tailmakers are so flooded with work. It's like, come on, dude. Does it HAVE to be a merbellas? Is that really the ONLY studio on the planet that is capable of giving you a beautiful, high quality tail?

Nope! I think Merbellas makes beautiful tails and I wanted one for the longest time, but now I'm really glad I went with Finfolk instead. They were so awesome to work with and I had a completely custom tail just in time for summer! There are enough tailmakers out there that you don't have to settle for waiting six months, yeesh.

Before ordering a taik from Finfolk, I hoped greatly to receive a Fish Butt tail but to no avail, the wait was making me anxious and now I don`t want to see another scenario reocuring à la Fish Butt again. There`s an important amount of money being invested there and I don`t want to be disappointed! It will be one year on October 1st that Fish Butt owes me a partial silicone tail. Hope you get your dream tail soon and I did not had a sneak peak at their new fluke unfortunately.

I'm sure they'll show it soon. Syrena has it and it's quite beautiful. From what I can tell, they're almost done with her tail so I hope production on yours starts swiftly. Finfolk seems pretty fast when it comes to production. I know they're also helping with a local Renn Faire. I sent a PM to you so we can discuss your tail. I'm very excited for you!

I just made another payment on my tail, yay! Finfolk is moving studios to a bigger space and they mentioned on Facebook that everything should be in working order in 1-2 weeks. Hopefully this won't delay tail production but you never know!

The tails I see from FinFolk have them quickly becoming a fave tailmaker. The betta just helps that. It's lovely in the water. I can be counted among those who thought it was an impressive design but wondered how well it would perform. It's so pretty!

Yes, Octavia- I'm so happy to have Abby and Bryn working on my tail that's gonna debut their new fluke! I'm in absolute love with it. :D I DO have progress pics (which people on my FB would have seen), but I think it's only fair to them to wait till I've pics of the final product- before I post it here. (as much as I already want to, lol)
Also... I can't WAIT to see how your betta turns out!

FYI Mermaid Octavia: my mermaid tail is 2 weeks overdue for production (I was penned for last week of September). I hope their studio move will not push your tail`s production tail further in November. I am getting impatient personnally. Hopefully it will be resolved in a resonable timely manner Good luck.

Mermaid Syrena

Marie-Josie Cayer: I think all of us (you, Octavia, Dan and myself) are looking forward to getting our tails. And that's not wrong. To be fair, I myself have been a bit worried of late because I have an aquarium performance coming up in just a month, and I really need to get into that deep water and practice with my tail.

BUT-- I think that as Finfolk clients and friends of Finfolk, we should try to be a little more understanding when it comes to production times. Abby and Bryn aren't machines- they don't pop those babies out on a conveyor belt, lol! They're people too, with their own schedules. And that goes for all tail makers.
They've been busy with Ren Fest, which just ended, and they've also been really stressed out moving their things into the new studio. Abby updates me every chance she gets- and just know that they haven't forgotten about our tails at all. They just need to get some logistical groundwork (i.e moving into winter studio) downpat before they can continue with production at the usual rate.

I know the wait can be agonizing, but just try to think of it this way: We will never be here again, experiencing this same delicious (and painful) tail anticipation again!

Mermaid Octavia

Marie-Josie: The first step, of course, would be deciding on your fluke type. :) Do you already have some colours in mind? I think you mentioned you were firming up the colour template with 'em. And you can think about what extra fins you'd like later, if any-- I spent a while thinking about those, haha. You can have pelvic fins, hip fins, ankle fins, heel fins (great for hiding heels!) and a dorsal.

Here's the most recent progress picture of my Finfolk Productions tail! They uploaded the 1st picture on their FB, and the 2nd one is the most recent picture they sent me. You can see how fantastic they were at transforming and gradiating the colours from the previous progress pic (the deep purple and yellow tail). They made it a lot more iridescent, shaded in pinks, and turned the yellow more champagne, which I requested for and am completely happy with. This fluke is also their newest fluke design. I love that it's so flowy and fae.

To be added: extra fins, and gold scale tipping.
I'm so psyched. I can't wait to get my tail and start practising in it for my upcoming gig. I just feel like this is the tail of my dreams, and Finfolk is doing a stellar job of translating it into RL.

Waikiki Mermaid: *laughs* I'm not the tallest mer swimming around here, that's for sure! I stand at a lofty 5"3. ;) It's mostly the angle of the picture, as well as the actual flowiness of the fluke. The middle V part to the tips ends are about 5 Coke can lengths, if that gives you any idea. :P So yeah. It's the longest fluke they've made yet.

Aziara: It most definitely is available for order! :D Bryn and Abby modelled it after a beautiful Pinterest picture that I'll scout around for, and named it after our favourite singer: Loreena (McKennitt), because she's so magickal and they made this fluke so magickal and gah. So yes. Available for order. :)

Scarlet Rose: It's gorgeous, innit? Yeah, like you said, so this one started out at a basic 2.5k. I upgraded to a competitor monofin. Then I added 100 for scale tipping, and it's 150 per pair of additional fins. I'm going to get 3 pairs of 'em.

Yes! Phenomenal! I think it would look a-freaking-mazing with the flame paint job I am looking for. I would also definitely upgrade to a competitor. Not sure I want additional fins but probably; just don't know the placement/shape.

From the Finfolk FB page:

Tail Design and Pricing

Ordering and designing a tail is an exhilarating process! We want it to be as easy as possible. Here is a breakdown of pricing, ad-ons, and how it all works!

Full silicone tails start at $2,500 and come with a Finis Trainer monofin.

Competitor monofins are a $150 upgrade.

Dorsal fins are a $150 upgrade

Extra fins of any variety (hip, ankle, etc) are $100 a pair.

There is no extra charge for coloring. In fact, 4-5 well blended colors make for beautiful depth, and we encourage full color schemes for that reason!

Scale Tipping is also available, and has been a very popular way to add depth and realism to tails. This detail painting comes at a $100 upgrade, and we highly encourage it!

I think I realized why I *thought* the flukes weren't glued down. It's their style for how they do the flukes, they come out on sides well past the monofin width wise. So to me I thought I was seeing a monofin gap when really they basically have extra fins that come out and extend. It's easier to see in the betta example, and once I realized it there I could see the design on all the others.

I'm really excited to see these tails in person at NC Merfest. These girls have gotten so good, so fast, it's insane!

Aziara, Scarlet Rose, PearlieMae, Triteia: Thank you! I can't wait to receive it and post pictures. Expect my unboxing video to be extremely excited and unglamorous.

AniaR: Yep. Their flukes are pretty wide in general. I'm one for theatricality, which these girls do great, so it all works out. I'm just curious to see if it'll be harder to swim in this tail because of the gorgeous flowy fluke. We'll see! And I never complain when it comes to sculpting better core muscles!

How long till it's delivered; do you have an idea on shipping time?

If I seem a little anxious to see what this tail looks like in the water it's because I'm talking with the girls on getting my flame one with this design. ;D Still don't know what details I want; additional fins, scales (what options are there?) and scale tipping need to be considered.

As for the waist NO; I would discuss with them how to remedy. 1 inch shouldn't be that bad but may squeeze you a little tighter than you'd like; my initial though would be to cut a splice in between a few scales to give a little room for expansion but I don't know what that would do to the integrity of the silicone. Talk to the girls!

My boyfriend is an absolute sweetheart, so he made sure it's coming over by expedited FedEx shipping. I'm expecting it to be here on Friday, maybe Saturday.

I think a flame rendition of this would be lovely. You mean reds/oranges/yellows? I'm pretty sure they only have one scale mold atm (they recently changed their scale patterning, so the one they're using now is what they say is the new and improved one). But for fins... go crazy! I'd also really recommend scale tipping. The girls did a great job on mine- it adds to the realism.

Yeah, I talked to Abby and she said it would be fine to neatly snip away maybe two or three scales from the middle, depending on how much I need to let out. I just want it to still sit above my bellybutton, but not compress me like a mer-dumpling, lol. Esp as I tend to bloat.

Woohoo on the shipping! OMG I am super excited FOR you so yeah; the description you used of you being "ALL KINDS OF MAGICKAL BATSHIT" is really accurate I'm sure. ;D

Yup, it's loosely based on the coloring on the bottom half (no white except maybe a little 'fade' at my waist) of the 'Fire fish':
15153

The actual fin on my tail would look more like actual flames. :D So I'm not sure what extra fins would look good; was wondering if there was a side long fin option to make it look more like the fire fish or flame.

Not sure also on what the difference scale tipping would make since I'm not sure how the color scheme will go. Will most likely let the girls decide!

Cool on the waist! :D

10-15-2013, 05:08 PM
Syrena, just try the tail on first before you trim any scales. It may fit just fine. My tail is I think 2-3 inches smaller than my measurements and it fits me fine. When I was doing the measurements, Abby and Bryn told me take off an inch all around anyway, to account for the stretchiness of the silicone and keep it snug around your waist so it doesn't gap. This works very well. They took off an additional inch from my measurements because at the time I was doing a workout competition with some work friends and was losing a fair amount of weight. Well, I didn't lose much more after that but oh well :P Still fits.

If you do trim scales, make sure to be very careful and round all the corners between scales. Do NOT make a cut down into the tail between the scales. This will just give it a place to tear from very easily. Yes, Dragonskin is very durable but it is not indestructible, and if you give it a pathway to tear on a high-stress area like the waist, it definitely will. I had a small tear in the waist of mine due to this, because there was an area where the point between the scales was too sharp. Luckily I was able to fix it easily (well, Lorelei fixed it for me, with a little more Dragonskin). Anyway, you just want to be very careful with that area. That's why I lowered the waist of mine a tiny bit, to take a little pressure off it when I pull it up over my rump.

And I can't remember if I posted this before, but here's a video of me swimming in my tail (with Mermaid Lorelei who is awesome and who made the video). You can see how it fits me and how the fluke moves in the water. I have more video clips but I'm clueless about video editing so I've done nothing with them so far  It's also the first stuff my husband and I were shooting with our GoPro so it was basically a practice run. I need to get some more footage and learn video editing...

Yes, my husband and I got a GoPro Hero 3 Black recently, that's what we used to get the footage. For the shots in that video, we just laid the camera on its back on the bottom of the pool looking up. It turned out pretty cool!

And Lorelei put the video together and picked the music :) I think she did a fantastic job.

I can say that GoPro footage looks AMAZING if you can get enough light. Outside swimming with sunshine is the best. Unfortunately most of my footage is in indoor pools because living in WA they see outdoor pools as a waste.. ya know with 9 months out of the year it's rainy cold (usually hangs around 38º-45º most of the winter and into spring and fall from what I've seen). The 2nd best footage I got was an indoor pool in Vancouver where they had skylights everywhere and the sun was shining through them strongly that day.

Winged Mermaid: Two Steps From Hell --> hellish name, heavenly music. Seriously. Can someone say "gym jaam"??
Theo: All right, that made me feel better. :) I'll wait to see how it fits, and then act accordingly! And yes I rewatched the video of you and Lorelei for like the fifth time. So beautiful! And the music!

I love the GoPro! Hubby got one before our trip to Jamaica; he took it with him when he went scuba diving and saw this:

http://youtu.be/bfJeYMhrk4g

His words: "The 'clicking' sound is the Dive Master ringing his "HOLY SHIT LOOK OVER THERE" bell."

We hoped to use it to capture me swimming but due to scheduling problems with the tour boat we didn't have a chance.

This was something I was thinking of doing if I ever make/buy a silicone tail. I love how yours fits, so I guess my theory was correct ;). Were the inches taken from all measurements (i.e., even knees and ankles)? Or just from 'fleshy' areas, like thighs, calves, and bum?

You know, I'm not entirely sure. I didn't actually think to ask back then. It's pretty tight across my knees, so I suspect they might have taken it in on all measurements. I do wish it wasn't quite so tight on my knees, but I don't think that impacts the way it looks.

Last night I was really carefully re-watching some of the footage we took to see how the waist looked when viewed from the side. There is a tiny bit of flapping on the back of the waist when I swim down, but it's barely perceptible, far less than a lot of other tails I have seen. I know it's inevitable that there will be a little bit of that in any tail (unless it's glued to your skin or something), but I think it's so minimal on my tail it turned out really great. And the gold of the waist looks really good against my skin and makes a really good transition without doing a "blended" waist (I'm not a huge fan of those, because I think skin-colored scales look really weird, and the skin tone never matches the paint job anyway). So yeah, basically, they did a really good job on my tail. Despite taking an hour to put on the first time I tried, and almost being reduced to tears because I thought maybe I was too fat to ever get into it, I finally figured out how to do it and the tightness of the waist is worth the effort! (and it only took me an hour the first time, now I can do it in 15-20 minutes with lube)

Oh also, I derped around for probably at least half the time just trying to get one foot into the monofin pocket because I was trying to just slide it in. I couldn't get the @#$%^&^% thing around my heel no matter what I tried. I finally figured out I had to just reach in and grab the heel strap and hang onto it with a couple fingers while I shoved my foot in. I had to do that for both legs separately. After that it was just a matter of hiking the rest of it up over my ample rump. But seriously, let me tell you, my legs slid in EFFORTLESSLY when I tried it with water-based lube. I am never not using lube again. I should buy an industrial-sized container of lube.

Good news Mermaid Octavia and Mermaid Syrena: my mermaid tail casting has starting this week. I have chosen the betta tail with personnal customizations to the highest portion of the fluke. It will have a dorsal and probably some small fins as we progress into production. I have been told by the ladies that the Betta tail does not have the Competitor monofin upgrade. Colour chosen will revolve around magenta, light blue and pink along with silver or gold scale tipping. The main body will be more like a red wine colour with degradation colours. Feel free to share your stories if it pleases so. Thank you!

That would be wonderful! ;; The fluke I'm getting is the standard/classic one, like this: https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1084962_204712009692745_1179580572_o.jpg and I'm not sure there is a finite list of options for pectoral fins, honestly. I know Finfolk is super busy so I don't want to pester them by asking tons of questions.

Initially I was going for pectorals like on this tail, but when I see it in the water, I don't care much for it. It might be better if it stopped mid-thigh, maybe? But there's also pectorals like ChristoMer has: https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/1048389_197282580435688_1511948724_o.jpg These are more pointed(?), I guess? Honestly, I'm looking for something that's both pretty and functional. With a black tail, I'd love for it to look badass but I'm at such a loss... @_@ I hope this blathering makes even a lick of sense.

Mermaid Lorelei
10-18-2013, 02:03 AM

Dan - I'm looking forward to seeing another merman tail! Merman dorsals, WOOHOO! (also, the red of your tail is gonna go well with your farmer's tank, lol)
Octavia - I am so psyched for you. Like I told you before ... URSULA COLOURED TAIL. Lol. I think a black and purple with silver highlights and a mean looking dorsal would be kickass, but that's just me. Can't wait to see what you decide on!

Personally, I would go for the fins like ChristoMer's if you're hoping for a badass black tail. :3 Is the entire tail going to be black, or are you going to have highlight colors?

The base color will be black and then there will be purple stripes from front to back and a gradient silver belly, like my neoprene tail (though it's probably hard to see in my avi). I think you're right with the badass fins like ChristoMer has. I hope he doesn't mind. >>

Thank you, Syrena! No dorsal for me, I think. Maybe in the future but I don't like how dorsals seem to pull open waists on the tails I've seen. That's why I'm going for pectorals instead. :) EDIT: PLUS I realize in the gigs I do, there's a lot of sitting involved and I'm afraid that would just ruin a dorsal. I do a lot of volunteer appearances with the Oregon Mermaids and a lot of times, we're sitting in some kind of chair!

No, I don't have pictures yet of my tail plans as we are going to discuss what would be best for a Man O War tail over the next couple of months (my tail is slated for the end of November/beginning of December for production), but I made a Pinterest page with the colors I am looking for (http://Pinterest.com/fandomfunk/man-o-war-tail-design) in the Man O War since they are translucent and can vary. I know they are going to make a dorsal fin that looks like the unique top shape and that I am going to have tentacle like ankle fins. I'll probably start sketching ideas soon.

But seriously, your tail is fintastic and I can't WAIT to se you swim in it! *bounces*. And it is so cool that you are the first one in Sungapore to sport such awesomeness!

I just came back and saw all these bootiful messages from all y'all (is that a phrase? lol). *emotional sniff* Thank you! It's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride - my beau and I spent an hour and a half the first time just trying to get the tail on me, and it hurt so much that I cried after that. But all my FB mer friends (you know who you are!!) were insanely encouraging, as were Abby and Bryn and a couple of my schoolmates-- so the next day I went down armed with some seeerious lube. And! I got into the tail in 15 minutes! Such joy.
It's extremely heavy - Finfolk tails generally look heavy because of their glorious big flukes, but mine is even heavier due to the extra length- so my ankles do hurt and I sink easily in this tail, but I think the beauty is worth the discomfort. Which I hope will pass.

And thank you, Merman Arion, for posting my pictures! :> I actually came on here intending to do just that, but I see you beat me to it. *winks* And I have absolutely no problems with that. Thank you for being a wonderful mer-brother.

They originally said that mine would be started the end of November/beginning of December, but I don't know if that look out is still the same. Who else has one on order with FinFolk besides us?
